Newcastle 4 Birmingham 0 – Video Highlights For Overseas Fans

Here’s the YouTube edition of the Sky Bet video highlights – the screen is chopped off a little bit but you can see all four goals and some near misses too.

A great performance from Dwight Gayle and all the lads today – exactly what we needed.

I listened to the game but didn’t watch it so will not be voting for MOM.

What I am curious about is why Mitrovic has more votes than players like Gouffron, Lascelles and several others who played for most of the game and contributed much more.

    Just who is voting?

You were right in not accepting a draw result!

We need to keep that third team a good distance away… 6.5 points on Reading is decent breathing space.

Would be good of we can burn off Reading over the next 4 to 5 games and that will then free both us and Brighton to play with more freedom and authority to extend our points tally beyond the track of third place.

    Thought Anita was class today.
Birmingham certainly attempted to play football compared to the shenanigans of Forest but they were left chasing shadows for much of the game.
Would have been good to see a couple of our shots from outside the box go in to give us a 6-0 victory.
The team looked balanced, enthusiastic and played with purpose.
    Long may it continue.

A blast from the past! I had friends who played in a group called Raw Spirit, who, according to the website, were one of the support bands for Free.

Great result and even better performance on the back of last week.
Wobble?? Was it even as much as a wobble given the nature of two of last weeks defeats?
Worried about Mitro though. His increasing lack of interest in playing for a club he dreamt of playing for and loves (his words) concerns me.
Critical of Diame in the no 10 role a few days ago, can’t complain too much about him today although maybe he should pace himself a bit more? Incredible energy from him first half.

Looking at the table, it sure looks competitive. The 13th team needs just 3 points to get into the playoffs. It’s Aston Villa.

Yeah we are the top team and shouldn’t settle for a draw against anyone.

Obviously it’s going to happen but not very often.

I have a vague memory of seeing Raw Spirit as a support act at the City Hall, I forget for who (possibly Man?), and as the organist was doing his (then obligatory) Keith Emerson bit the old Hammond proved none too co-operative and appeared to fall back onto his foot – at least judging by the sudden expression of pain on his face. Of course it might have been just a profound musical trance – and I might be getting support bands mixed up…..

I don’t think Raw Spirit had a keyboard player – at least when I knew them it was 2 guitars, bass, drums and a singer.

Jail, just a quick coz foot’s on. Dunno why the commentator said that mate. It was nowt to do with Gayle. What happened was Mitro was warming up down the line at the leaves and had a bit of an exchange with the crowd, as he does! That got the crown going, hence the Mitro chants. Commentator should’ve spotted that really. Think he only took him off to rest him. You’d have to be mad to swop Gayle for Mitro right now. Dreading if he gets hurt.

    Bobbybee,
His point was that the crowd were singing at Mitro but it’s been like that all season, there isn’t even a song for Gayle and the round of applause at the start of games isn’t in line with a prolific top scorer.

@25 Hi Ron, I’m sure the guy on organ also used to work at McKay’s music on Westgate Road. I have just checked on the old interweb and found that my memory is OK and Raw Spirit did indeed support Man at the City Hall, and the date was June 21st 1973. So maybe the line-up changed?

Speaking to reporters at his pre-match press conference, Magpies boss Rafa Benitez confirmed his desire to extend the contracts of both Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran, confirming that the club is in discussions with the two players over the possibility of tying them down to new deals, as quoted by the Shields Gazette.

Newcastle have been impressive on the whole so far this season, despite a mini-blip in recent weeks, and both Gouffran and Anita have played pivotal roles in their side’s campaign, appearing in 29 Championship games between them.
And Benitez provided an update on the contract situations regarding the pair, with both of their deals set to expire in the summer of 2017, as quoted by the Shields Gazette:

“The club is talking with the agents, and now it’s a question of time.”

Gouffran has contributed with three goals and two assists in 15 Championship outings for the Tyneside outfit, whilst Anita has chipped in with just one assist in 14 games, although he has been utilised in more of a defensive capacity this season.

With the club building for the future, it will be vital for Newcastle to tie down the players whom Benitez deems to be important for their hopes of progression over the next few years.

And judging by his comments, that is exactly how he views both Anita and Gouffran.

Saw Clapton with Derek and the Dominoes also, at the Mayfair.
Junco’s – first saw them late 60’s at the Rex in Whitley Bay.
Saw them again about 5/6 years ago in Alnwick. Just reading last week they are going to finish for good this year.

Happy about the contract news for Anita and Gouffran :

Just a shame that Pardew and Carver never tried Anita at right back he looked good there last season when Rafa moved him there and has been excellent this season !Deserves a new contract to have him and Yedlin competing for the right back slot !

It might depend if Anita still sees himself as a central midfielder and maybe gets an offer from a Dutch team to play that role!

Gouffran will be an uncomplaining squad player if he gets a new contract would be worth having next season as cover for any injuries as next season will be transitional

Tiote can do one though his time is up !

I don’t get this Birmingham tried to match us at our game. They were simply dreadful – in the first half they could hardly string a pass together. I’d be happy to play against their number 9 every week he was hopeless. They improved slightly in the second half but never looked like being a serious goal threat.

    10/11 Anita/Yedlin, wrong.
Diame, especially first half was brilliant.
    Hayden was top drawer.
    Anita did really well.
    Clark, again, very good!
No bad players, guess Gayle will get MoM for goals, but would go with Diame.
Great atmosphere too today and could have easily got 10!
