Can Newcastle Beat Wigan On Wednesday?

The games are starting to come thick and fast and we are at Wigan Athletic in the Championship on Wednesday night, with most of the other games being played on Tuesday night.

After that we play at Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon in the last game before Christmas.

It would be great if we can pick up two wins in those two games and start another (very) long winning streak.

But nothing is ever certain in football as we have found out this season.

Warren Joyce – Wigan manager

Former Newcastle center-back Gary Caldwell was sacked as Wigan manager in late October and Warren Joyce is the new manager.

Joyce is the former Manchester United U21 manager.

Wonder if Mitro, Yedlin, Lazaar etc will play on Wednesday to give some of the guys who played on Saturday a week in between until Saturday – making full use of the interchangeable squad.

Players only get ‘tired’ when they are losing.

Players who win always want to play. Nobody looked tired on Saturday.

Given that the last time Rafa made wholesale changes he lost the game and so I would be really surprised if he repeated his mistake.

Why replace Gayle, the league’s top scorer and bang on form, with someone who isn’t ?

    Ed,
Why did you just mention 4 best players, usually I think you do 5. I only mention this because apparently many of those who actually watched the game went with Anita.

Maybe 2 questions needed: 1. Did you somehow watch the game? (PS. If you listened, it don’t really count) 2. Who was MOM (PS. Don’t tick your favourite player)

I was at the game and I gave Anita MOM along with a few comments on the Goufran discussion people were having last night.

As far as I a concerned you need players like Goufran Dummett and Colback in the team to do the dirty yards – to tackle, break up the opposition attacks, close down the opposition and give the ball to the more flair players.
all of the above were missing from the Blackburn game and we were woeful – Blackburn were given far to much space and Shelvey plays to deep dropping into a third centre half position to pick up the ball off our two central defenders who do not like to carry the ball forward so pass sideways or hoof it long.

This is how I saw it yesterday….
    \just got in
My summing up – the best we have played at home all season – a complete performance
Man of the Match – Anita – absolute brilliant didn’t put a foot wrong – defended well attacked well linked up wee and didn’t put one pass astray
    ray
Only thing to moan about is our twin central defenders had acres of space to carry the ball forward but always wanted to pass sideways or to Shelvey which resulted in Shelvey playing to deep
    merit marks
Darlow – 7 did not have anything to do – one save when he had to get down smartly to save a shot that came through a forest of legs
Dummet – 7 excellent in defence put in a couple of good tackles linked up well
Lascalles – 7 excellent defensive duties but does not look comfortable on the ball
Clark – 8 Another excellent defensive effort won most aerial balls came forward a couple of times with the ball – needs to do it more when opposition give you the space
Anita – 9 brilliant in defence and attack tackle defended and never wasted the ball – involved in two of the goals – 5 star
Shelvey – 8 always wanted the ball wasted it a couple of times but his work rate was second to none – bit petulant a couple of times.
Diame – 8 best game in a TOON shirt especially first half – set up first goal with a great cross and the second when he tackled back to get the ball – carried the ball well – faded second half
Goufran – 7 did the dirty work today tackled defend got up and down the pitching scored
Hayden – 7 another who had a excellent game in central midfield
Ritchie – 7 best game in a while for the TOON always involved like Goufran did a lot of the spade work
Gayle – 8 great exhibition of goal poaching right place at the right time needs to be stronger on the ball at times
Atsu 6 busy display nearly scored
Mitrovich – excellent cameo performance and set Ats away with a exquisite pass
Lazar – not on long enough but did well
crowd – in great voice today and also the Brummies who had nothing much to shout about.
Ref – better than last week mind that would not take much – again a bit pedantic at times blew up for silly fouls to many times

Mitro needs to be kept in the mix, he too can be prolific as he has shown. I think he needs to keep working and keep interested, that’s why Rafa gives him minutes. I think he’ll get half hour or more next game.

I don’t think Rafa doesn’t value him, as I’ve read here. If he didn’t he wouldn’t play him. Tiote comes to mind.

Slank, I didn’t mentioned tired. Keeping a squad of players fresh and involved is a different philosophy entirely.

Shot term it’s fine, long term, players get burnt put, injured, lack of form etc. I love the tinkering Rafa makes. Long term benefits over the season.

Does anyone know if Dwight often does this cupping the ear celebration to the crowd?
Was just wondering, having read a good point made by a poster recently about sections of the crowd consistently chanting for Mitro despite his underwhelming contributions, if Gayle gets a bit frustrated about not getting great plaudits for his goalscoring ratio..

100% agree with you, to many just pick there face player and have certain prejudices against others,

my mom was Gayle and only because he got the 3 goals and an assist.
my second choice was anita, and for me he has been my player of the season so far.

i’m not a fan of the way ed does the MOM award as it is unfaire, it should be done on an average score of all the players, if we rated every player we would see different results. Anita would be high up on most people’s voting. IMO

Sing, people don’t dislike Gayle, far from it. ‘They’, like me, happen to like Mitro. Liking one doesn’t automatically mean the other is degraded.

Gayle is the main man at the moment as he’s scoring goals and offer a lot to the team, and that’s fair enough. He deserves it.

Long may Gayle’s form last but even the best of them go off the boil, get found out by certain defenders, get injured, etc.

We can’t rely on one player and I think Mitro has proven that he can be on fire, so to speak. Keep him interested.

I’d like to see that Murphy guy get minutes plus, in time, Arma. If he ain’t ready to at least be in the squad by summer, maybe he’ll have missed the bus.

Rafa’s rotation causes the most irritation to those who don’t “get it” at times like this.

When folk trot out the old chestnuts “winners don’t get tired ” and “if it ain’t bust don’t fix it ”

Rafa looks much further ahead than most of us and the main reason for rotation is to keep the entire squad involved , match fit and most of all “connected” for any future eventualities like injuries or suspensions .

cyprus am gonna get pellets for this haha but they met Rafa and this come from his mouth (I get the feeling this was a part of the meeting they weren’t meant put put tbh)

Anyway essentially the coaching staff are at a loss with a certain striker that has played recently because he doesn’t listen and ignores instructions, basically when he gets on the pitch he just does what he wants

They also say they got the feeling that he thinks he knows it already

there’s no way he’s coming good under Rafa acting like that he’s a tactical manager and very strict on what he wants from players so if u don’t do what he says u aren’t going to play

If there is any modicum of truth in that.
Rafa has to loan him out at the moment to mollify the fans – look what Keegan got from the fans when he sold Andy Cole.
Toon fans and their devotion to popular strikers is a potent mix.

Gayle is doing the business and he’s scoring well. As a mobile forward he drags defenders all over the place and often leaves them behind. More importantly he reads the game and gets into goal scoring space as he did against Birmingham.

Mitro is less mobile and plays differently particularly later in games when he appears and seems to be told to play deeper and frustrate defenders with physical impact and hold up play.

Some fans like Mitro because they want him to be physical with the opposition and create conflict and adopt the old Newcastle love affair with an out and out striker in the mould of Shearer or SuperMac. It’s a different game these days and unless Mitro gets mobile and on the end of crosses more effectively that aint happening.

Gayle is the man who’s taking us back up – lets give him some real vocal support , he deserves it !

I was there Saturday and I voted for Gayle. Goals win you games, it’s that simple. You can play great and lose, but goals are all that matters. Gayle’s not my favourite player either, I voted because his contribution ultimately got the points. Picking a motm is a personal thing and it depends what you like. I thought both Anita and Diame had great games and on another day I would have gone for one or the other, but a man who scores three goals? Always going to get it unless he also missed a dozen sitters. As an ex striker myself it’s a no brained. 🙂

Mitro made one exquisite pass to |Atsu, who should have scored. He is good as an impact, coming on late and gets the crowd going. Hard to see him as starter, because Shelvey, Hayden, Ritchie, Anita, and Diame all rely on Gayle’s movement. Someone mentioned Gayle needs to be stronger, holding the ball up, but when you watch him off the ball, he occupies 3 or 4 of their players, constantly.

Jib, to be fair, the number of fans who questioned Keegan was minimal. Like any manager who does well, you simply have to trust them. Yes, some mouthy ones gathered outside whining, and Kevin told them to trust him. He got it right and we went from strength to strength. Sir Les then Shearer were adequate replacements! I love Mitro. Love his passion and commitment but he’s second fiddle to Gayle now and unless he improves I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Rafa move him on. He’s ruthless in his search for success and that’s what we want if we intend to challenge.

First half Diame was MoM, but he faded second half. Cannot fault his effort.
Hayden was very good and is getting better, starting to copy Shelvey, spraying passes, dribbling and shooting and some crunching tackles!
Shelvey was very good, again. Anita was top drawer, pulled up near the end with cramp/niggle but he would have played on with 2 broken legs- has to get a new contract! Maybe rested, for Yedlin due to this!
But Gayle had to be the MoM due to the goals.
Sorry, Mitro fans, he ain’t ousting Gayle anytime soon and if Diame keeps playing like that he won’t get to partner Gayle, either!

Hibbett, that’s why I never vote unless I see the game mate. Commentators can give the wrong impression. Jail said on the radio they were bemoaning fans for singing Mitro’s name when Gayle was on a hattrick. It was utter Bollox. Mitro was warming up at the Leaves end and having his usual fun with the fans. That’s why they were singing his name, not because they wanted him on and Gayle off. But of course, you had to be there to know that, just as you point out. The commentator should’ve recognised that instead of winding people up. It was mentioned on the phone in and they still didn’t put it right. Agenda? Who knows.

I expected Saturdays game to be a cracker simply because Birmingham play football on the ground. I said beforehand that if they try that, we’ll play them off the ground and it could be the best game this season. They simply couldn’t play to our standard, but credit them for not trying to park the bus and trying to play. They would’ve been better off like, but glad they didn’t. 🙂 Any side in this league who takes us on at football will suffer the same result because we’re the best in the league.

Bobby – I think Birmingham’s main problem was that they were setup to play 4 4 2 and were completely overrun in midfield. It didn’t help their cause that couldn’t string 2 passes together in the first half and their number 9 is one of the poorest strikers I’ve seen.

Martoon, having watched them this season on TV they have played better! Didn’t see it as 442, they only had one up front and he was pants on Saturday. They are what they are with a manager who plays the game on the ground. That was never going to work against us and they played right into our hands. As their gaffer said, they came to play and got a lesson in football. Nice to hear the truth instead of ‘I thought we deserved to win’ when that’s the furthest from the truth. 🙂 We played well though and that was always on the cards after Friday last week. Forest at home will be a cracker – hope we score seven!
