The Shields Gazette are reporting today that Liverpool have been watching Newcastle center-back Jamaal Lascelles over the last few weeks and are keen on the Newcastle captain.
We have watched Liverpool’s last two league games where they have picked up just one point at Bournemouth and at home to West Ham and they conceded six goals in the process.
The Reds certainly need to improve their defense, which is their current weakness.
Jamaal Lascelles – Newcastle captain
They did sign former Newcastle target Joel Matip from Schalke 04 as a free agent last summer and he’s played quite well for them, but they must have a much better defense if they are to win the Premier League for the first time.
The Gazette are reporting that Liverpool have been at Newcastle games over the last few weeks, but maybe they are looking at Ciaran Clark, who has also been in top form for us and has also played 134 games in the Premier League for Aston Villa?
He’s probably playing the best football of his career at Newcastle right now.
Chelsea are also said to be willing to bid for Lascelles in the January transfer market, where a fee of £18M has been mentioned, but it would take a lot bigger fee for Rafa to even think about selling one of his best players.
The Gazette are saying that Liverpool scouts were at the Newcastle game against Birmingham on Saturday and we dare say there were a number of Newcastle players who would have impressed them in what was a great team display from the rampant Magpies.
Jurgen Klopp is looking to sign defenders in January, but there’s just no way Newcastle will allow Jamaal to leave the club as he looks to be one of Rafa’s key players who he will build a top team around – or at least try to do that.
Not only has Jamaal got a great temperament and is playing very well for Newcastle, but he is leader on and off the field, which is why Rafa appointed him as captain at the young age of 22 in the summer.
We’d be very surprised if Rafa even thinks of letting the 23 year-old leave the club in January, but it would depend on what fee Liverpool have in mind.
Every player has their price, even at the new Newcastle, but those fees have to be on the Andy Carroll and Moussa Sissoko scale of silliness.
