Last night when Newcastle were laboring a little with Wigan going after the equalizer in the second half, Rafa brought on Christian Atsu for a tired looking Matt Ritchie and Christian produced the goods for Newcastle.
Christian is on loan for the season from Chelsea and the Ghanaian International has made no secret of the fact he would love to sign full time for Newcastle and he did that possibility no harm at all last night with a well taken goal just 9 minutes after he entered the fray.
Christian Atsu after scoring last night
On 78 minutes the ball fell to him in the penalty area and he steadied himself before rocketing a shot past veteran goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen with that great left foot of his to make it 2-0 and the game was safe.
After the game Rafa was pleased with a decent professional performance and the lads did what they had to do to win the game, but these fixtures are not easy.
This is what Rafa said when asked about Christian’s contribution last night and whether he would be signing the lad full time in January:
“We needed fresh legs and a little bit of pace.”
“He can do that and did it well.” “That was the ideal situation for us, we needed the second goal to finish the game.”
“We don’t talk about the market now, but at the moment he is signed up for the next game with Burton so I am pleased with that.”
Newcastle will soon lose players to the African Cup of Nations next month including Christian and Mo.
We could also lose Jonjo Shelvey next week if he is unsuccessful at his personal hearing for his FA misconduct charge where he has pleaded not guilty.
