It was first reported in October that Newcastle were interested in 24 year-old Bordeaux left back Maxime Poundje in the Sunday People and the Mirror is reporting Newcastle are indeed interested in signing the French left back.
Left-back could be a position that Rafa wants to strengthen next month with Paul Dummett and Achraf Lazaar fighting it out for the starting position.
Local lad Dummett has played 22 times in that position this season for Newcastle and is a solid enough defender.
Bordeaux left back Maxime Poundje
Poundje is of Cameroon descent and joined Bordeaux, his home town club, back in 2003 and played against Newcastle in December of 2012 in the 2-0 win in the group stage of the Europa League.
That’s when Newcastle won the group and reached the quarter-final stage before being eliminated by Benfica.
Poundje made his debut for Bordeaux back in August 2012 at the age of 19 when he came on as a substitute against Evian.
He has played for both the France U18 and U19 sides but has never been capped at the full International level.
He has played around 73 times for the French club with one goal and two assists.
Poundje is in the final year of his contract at the French club and could be picked up for a nominal fee next month if Rafa really rates the player.
Other clubs are said to be interested in the player including Crystal Palace, Swansea City, West Brom and Sunderland.
The transfer window opens in 14 days time so we’ll soon see which players Rafa is really after in January.
