Steven Gerrrard Talks About The Inspirational Rafa Benitez

It’s the greatest comeback in Champions League history, the way Liverpool were 3-0 down at half time in the final of 2005 when they played AC Milan in Istanbul.

Then the miracle of Istanbul happened and Liverpool, led quite brilliantly by captain Steven Gerrard, came back in that second half to draw the game 3-3 after 90 minutes and after no goals were scored in extra time they won the penalty shootout by 3-2.

The now retired Liverpool captain has been telling BT Sport just exactly what happened at halftime that caused such an amazing reversal of fortunes.

Steven Gerrard and Rafa Benitez in Istanbul after famous win

This is what Steven has said:

“Rafa sorted us out and we came out a very different team. He was very calm, it was more tactical. We were surprised, we were expecting him to lose it a bit.”

“There was a lot of noise early on, but then Rafa came in and calmed us all down and gave us the inspirational team talk that enabled us to get back in the game.”

We have to also remember that was Rafa’s first season as the Liverpool manager and he got them to the final again in 2007 but this time they lost to AC Milan by a score of 3-2.

Rafa is performing his magic now at Newcastle and we have 16 wins and a draw in our first 22 games in the Championship and are top of the league at Christmas.

Pretty disappointed at the exit to Hull in the LC – our first decent chance at making a good Cup run and we get dumped out in a very embarrassing fashion – letting them score when we are a man up in extra time with a torrid penalty shootout to follow. Granted we had already made it further than we had in a long time but it would have been great to get to the semis or the final.

Will see how the FA Cup goes. Hopefully the league will be ticking along and we’ll have good momentum and be up for those games.
