The Northern Echo are reporting today that Newcastle will go after an attacking midfielder and a winger next month when the January transfer window opens up.
It certainly seems like a winger is a definite target with Rafa hinting as much last week and we are short of creativity in the middle of the park – so a creative central midfielder also seems to make a lot of sense.
With Jonjo Shelvey having had his hearing with the FA yesterday in Birmingham, the verdict on his FA misconduct charge will come out soon – probably today at some point.
Daryl Horgan of Dundalk is a target
We’ll hope for the best, but the chances are not good that Jonjo will avoid a five match ban.
The top priority seems to be a winger and Newcastle have scouted players like Dundalk’s Daryl Horgan and Angers’ Nicolas Pepe this season.
In terms of the central midfield position Newcastle almost signed Brentford’s Alan Judge in late August, but they held off when it was clear Judge would not be fit before January.
Alan is now in training, but we’d still be surprised if Newcastle make a move for him in January, since he becomes a free agent in the summer.
Newcastle will want to wait until Alan proves he is fully fit and back to his old form which had him in the Championship Team of the Season last term, before making a move for him.
19 year-old Youri Tielemans of Anderlecht is also a creative midfielder Newcastle have been watching all season.
The Northern Echo are reporting that West Brom’s 25 year old winger Callum McManaman is still a potential target, which is surprising.
We wonder if Callum is good enough to come into the Newcastle squad next month, with Rafa likely to want to improve the quality of the squad significantly before next season starts – hopefully when we are back in the Premier League.
