Rafa – Jonjo Is Special – We Have To Find Another Way

In his interviews today before the game on Monday night at home to Sheffield Wednesday, Rafa Benitez was asked how he would cope with the absence of the creative Jonjo Shelvey.

Rafa admitted Newcastle do not have another player like Jonjo, who can control the tempo of the game on his own, and we have seen him do that so many times this season.

24 year-old Shelvey has had a great season so far, but we will have to do without him in our next five games after his suspension by the FA on his misconduct charge.

Jonjo Shelvey – can control the game

This is how Rafa said he would try to handle the situation as reported in the Shields Gazette:

“We have confidence in the team and the squad. We can use different players, and they can do well.”

“But Jonjo can dictate the tempo and control the game and we don’t have especially this kind of player.”

“In terms of what we need, we are trying to find a player that can cope with this.” “We can use different players and we can change the system or formation.”

“Or we can play another style of football with the same intensity and the same ideas.” “We have to find another way.”

“If we have to play Cheick Tiote or Jack Colback or another one, it has to be different, as they can’t play like him.”

“But the rest of the team can do more or less the same things.”

It would be interesting if Rafa plays Cheick Tiote on Monday night, since he is expected to leave the club next month before his contract runs out in the summer, when he will become a free agent after spending seven years on Tyneside.

Cheick Tiote and Jack Colback both kept Shelvey out of the team in last seasons final run in, when our results were among the best 5 in the EPL.

Looks like he new he was scooped to be honest and calling Gayle and Mitrovic on his behalf backfired because they didn’t even back up his version of events. Actually made him look more gulity. You’d like to think the three of them might have gotten their story straight beforehand. They must be as thick as mince

We were a team playing very short of confidence then and playing a containing game due to the amount of hammerings we had. I don’t see Tiote playing for us ever again. I’m sure I’ll be reminded about it if he does mind.

I remember that team being very competitive and dangerous, admittedly with our backs to the wall and with Sissoko and Townsend firing. It’s a makeshift midfield for 5 games only, and two very good players who have played together many times before. If Tiote is available and being paid, he has to be in contention.

Is Colback fit, and when does Diame go to the ACoN? That’s a tip top 11 at this level.

Reading the report through is quite laughable.
Its based solely on the balance of probability, that the main witnesses were 3 wolves players, who gave an inconsistent account of what was alleged to have been said. The ref and the ‘victim’ did not hear any racist language. He got the fine and the ban because he didn’t have any witnesses himself, i’m not surprised he didn’t appeal it would be pointless. Im not convinced personally, and if the FA arent 100% sure themselves they shouldn’t use it as an exercise to show they are anti-racism.

Actually the more I look at that side the more I see a common thread in Rafa’s apparent first choice 11’s. Maturity, character and workrate, with Shelvey being almost the exception, although he is much improved in these regards. I don’t see Rafa looking outside the group to replace him for these 5 games, unless he’s got a gun signing in the works, and even then it’s hard to see him being pitched straight in.

“Balance of probability”. That’s a good term. Those chosen to sit in judgement felt the evidence compelling enough to uphold the allegation. Everything would indicate Shelvey had almost certainly been naughty. Not an entirely conclusive outcome, but getting off without sanction when three witnesses have heard a clear racial slur, couldn’t surely be more satisfactory. Whatever he said wasn’t good. 5 games and 100000 pounds, I’m entirely comfortable with.

I would like to wish each and everyone of you a very happy Christmas, and offer my best wishes to you all for 2017, may it be a year of health, wealth and happiness, and yes that includes you Jib and Welshie, good will to all men.

Now let’s get on and win this league.

    Confirmed Rafa bingo lineup……….best guess!

Think it will be a tough game this, and we will have to soak up a bit of pressure. think we will win it but it will be tight so I’m going for 2-1 HWTL.

It will be interesting to see if our style changes, and we press more in an effort to get the ball into the box, not having to rely on Shelvey’s long passes out to the wings.

It would be nice to hammer a couple of team early on, just to send a message to the league that Shelvey is not such a big miss.

Interesting read, that FA written account of the Shelvey hearing.
I think there are significant holes there in the FA case. They discredit Gayle’s account of what he didn’t hear, but wholly support 3 Wolves’ players remarkably different accounts of what they say they heard, in the same incident, justifying that by describing the wolves players as having ‘given their evidence with conviction and openness’. – That’s just an irrelevant opinion to give weight to the FA case.
They basically dismissed the bald c*** bit and Gayle’s denial that he told Shelvey about the card gesture, based on visual (video clip).
If they can’t agree what was said, not even close, how can he be found guilty of misconduct based on the ‘evidence’ given?
They are dismissing one set of unsubstantiated claims in favour of another.
No impartial witness heard any of it. Including the referee.
