Rafa Benitez has very rarely mentioned Newcastle owner Mike Ashley in his press conferences, but today he was asked about Mike so he answered the question.
During the press conference where Rafa was dressed in a jacket and black shirt he started out by wishing everybody associated with Newcastle United a Merry Xmas and he said he thinks Mike Ashley has to be happy with the current situation at the club.
Rafa Benitez – wore his jacket and black shirt today
Rafa was asked near the end of his press conference how happy is the owner with the current situation:
“I think he is really happy, everybody, every fan involved with Newcastle has to be happy.”
“I think he is happy, but he doesn’t want to be in the frame – he doesn’t want to be here.”
“He has got other people managing the club and doing their jobs.”
The next question was that with the game starting at 7:45 pm on Monday night againt Sheffield Wednsday it was difficult for visiting fans to get back home after the game.
This was Rafa’s amusing response to that question:
“We will try to play quick so we can finish early.” No – the times in England are different to other countries to be fair.”
“They change the fixtures now in this country and sometimes you play at 10:00am, 1:00pm.”
“And in Spain you can start at 10:00 pm in the evening.”
“So I remember a game we finished at 12:00pm and we had extra time – we were starting the next day and it was 30th June, so we were starting the next season.”
“So it was quite complicated in terms of contracts – because you had players you play at 10:00pm and it’s fine.”
“But he finished his contract so the next year he is still playing for you in extra time, but he is not your player.”
“So it’s very complicated.”
Rafa was jovial and upbeat throughout his press conference today which reflects the mood of the Newcastle fans around the world in this festive season.
