Newcastle were linked with Robert Snodgrass a couple of days ago and he hasn’t signed any extension on his contract, which runs out in June of next year.
That means he could come at a cut price next month with the report in the Star suggesting Newcastle could get him for around £5M and that we are favorites to sign him.
Hull are looking for anywhere up to £10M for him, but there seems little chance of them getting that for a player who could become a free agent next summer.
There has been speculation that Rafa Benitez wants Snodgrass brought in because of uncertainties surrounding the futures of both Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran, but we wonder if it’s got anything to do with that.
Robert Snodgrass on Newcastle’s radar
Rafa said last week mentioned that winger was probably a position he needed to strengthen next month and he mentioned the injury to Rolando Aarons, which will keep on the sidelines for at least the rest of the season.
Rafa has only Gouffran, Ritchie and Atsu to choose from as out-and-out wingers with the absence of Rolando for the season, so it would seem to make sense that Snodgrass would come in as a replacement for Rolando.
And we’ve noticed when Rafa brings in a player they are usually good and Robert would certainly be a good addition to our squad and he is a proven player in the Premier League too.
With Rafa already mentioning that Newcastle are talking to both Yoan Gouffran and Vurnon Anita about new contracts, we don’t think it reflects at all on the Frenchman, who has been a star for Newcastle this season.
Christian Atsu has also played well so far this season so Snodgrass could come in next month and we could still see both Gouffran and Atsu offered new permanent deals on Tyneside.
That seems to be the most logical reason why Rafa wants Snodgrass brought in.
But if the news on the Hull City winger is true it probably means we will not go after Dundalk’s Irish winger Daryl Horgan.
