If what was served up tonight at St. James’ Park is any guide as to how we will perform with Jonjo Shelvey out of the side, then we need to bring in a creative midfielder as fast as we can next month.
It may be good that there are only three more league games that Jonjo will miss and we have to hope that Newcastle recover from what was a poor showing tonight when we really didn’t deserve anything out of this game.
Karl Darlow was unbelievable in the Newcastle goal and he is quickly becoming a big star at the club.
Wednesday players celebrate winning goal
Of the four games we have lost at home in the league already – we have failed to score in three of them.
🙁
But it has to be worrying that our players may have started to believe their own headlines – because in the seven games since we had that nine game winning streak we have lost four games and three of them at home.
That’s not good – and we are too easy to beat this season – having lost seven games in all including the defeat at Hull City in the League Cup.
So while the team is a vast improvement on last season’s shambles under the woeful Steve McClaren – Rafa is right – Newcastle still need to improve if we are going to be promoted in May.
And this performance should enhance Newcastle’s chances of bringing some new players in next month.
And we should be very careful of saying that it’s a forgone conclusion we will be promoted in May.
It’s not.
And we would point to losing four games of the last seven as proof of that and it’s not that the teams that beat us are world beaters either.
Blackburn, Hull (bottom of PL), Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday,
It’s times like these when good teams show themselves, but we must become a lot harder to beat than we showed tonight when Wednesday wanted the win more than we did.
That’s simply inexcusable.
This was a hard game to watch and a very tough defeat to take just one day after Christmas.

Comment #1I quite like playing Dummett and Gouffran away from home as teams turn games into a battle and they put the foot in but at home we need to be more expansive from kick off on both flanks
Our only hope was pass it to Richie, Diame or Gayle who were getting fouled and marked out the game we needed a lot more to open them up
People will say the players let Rafa and the fans down but no its the team selection that has done it hes picked a team with a lot of grafters and limited ability everyone knows what Colback , Dummet, Gouffran and Hayden can do so all Wednesday did was marked Richie and Diame out the game and let the lesser players have plenty of the ball
Rafa should have seen this at half time and made changes but no Wednesday actually realised the game was there to be won and attacked us even more without Darlow that would have been embarrassing

Comment #2Teams are starting to seriously figure us out Shelvey and Gayles have been winning games near enough on their own which has papered over the cracks of our general attacking play!
We only really attack down the right wing which makes breaking down teams who sit deep impossible its like playing with 9 men with Dummett and Gouffran on the attack
How is Lazaar not getting a look in ? Atsu always looks the part when he plays but never gets more than 2 games in a row starting

…well of course, mate!
But we did have the lions share of possession. And they had more to thank their fat mackem keeper than we did for Dreamboat Mk2.
Agreed with Charlie in the main but thought Hayden at least tried.
I’ve heard that Delph is coming…we could do with some umph in midfield.

Comment #6I must admit, the most infuriating part of the game for me was when it was clear within the first 10 minutes that how we were set up and intending to play wasn’t going to work yet no changes were evident to counter that until mitro came on with 10 minutes left.
He changed the game as gayle was getting bullied and Diame was invisible.
Perez? What’s he actually do apart from run down blind alleys then hold onto the ball too long instead of laying it off quickly.
Hayden and colback had poor games but I expect Colback to be shit tbh as it’s the norm but was disappointed with Hayden, usually solid but was sloppy in possession today.
The defence looked shaky no outball for the defenders to play. Hoof most of the time or sideways passing so Dummett was in his element.
Darlow Motm for me. Could of easily of been 3,4,5 without him.
We made Wednesday look good because we were so poor.
Let’s hope we sort it out for the forest game because surely we aren’t a one man team.
Shelvey. Massive miss imo.

Comment #8Oh and I agree (to whoever mentioned it) that colback shoud of been off for mitro long before he was.
It kind of summed our decisions up though when Diame came off for perez.
Mitro all day long.
