Goalkeeper Unlikely To Leave Newcastle

There’s news in the Belgium press that a number of Belgium clubs are interested in taking the Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels on loan next month.

Matz has lost his place to goalkeeper Karl Darlow and is currently the back-up goalkeeper, although former number one goalkeeper Rob Elliot is returning from a serious knee injury and will fight it out with Matz for the back-up spot soon.

Matz Sels – not allowed to go on loan

The 24-year-old Belgium goalkeeper has been linked with a move back to his former club Gent in addition to powerhouse Anderlecht, who are reported to be keen on him.

But it’s extremely unlikely that Sels will be allowed to leave Newcastle next month because outstanding England U21 goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has bided his time since he was recalled last October from a loan move to Crawley Town, where he made 12 appearances.

Freddie was recalled after Tim Krul was seriously injured playing for the Netherlands.

Freddie has been the number three goalkeeper at Newcastle and has missed out on first team football for over a year now and he will definitely be sent out on loan next month, according to Rafa Benitez.

Like most top managers Rafa wants three experienced goalkeepers at Newcastle, so we don’t get ourselves into the mess of late 2014, when we had to bring in untested young goalkeeper Jak Alnwick when both Tim Krul and Rob Elliot were injured.

Rafa will probably give the second choice goalkeeper a run-out in the FA Cup tie at Birmingham on January 7th so it’s likely that Sels will get a chance to shine in that game.

There’s an outside chance that Rob Elliot will play in that game.

Comments welcome.

    Confirmed Rafa Bingo

    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Darlow . . . . . . . . . . .
    . Yedlin . Lascelles . Clark . Dummet .
    . . . . . . . . . . . Anita . Hayden . . . . . . . .
    . Ritchie . . . . . . Diame . . . . Gouffran .
    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gayle . . . . . . . . . . . .

I hope he goes 4-4-2 with Mitro and Gayle up top, but I think this is the change he’ll make without Shelvey. Who knows though? HWTL.

Up until last summer the club still operated an eleven ‘purples’ policy. If you knew who the purples were you knew the starting eleven if they were all fit.

And that’s the other myth you’ve been pushing…that the whole book has been torn up.
Yet to be proved in my view, and in the view of a good few people more informed than you, with respect, who wouldn’t dream of claiming to know what’s in Rafa’s contract.
    No…that’s just you, apparently.
At the moment we don’t have 11 purples.
    We have one.

Got to give Watford credit in this game – the only side to make Palace look like world beaters this season. 🙂 Nice goal mind, Townsend wriggling free of three defenders before sliding a lovely weighted ball to Cabaye, who took it first time. Made in Newcastle.
So, 7.45 on boxing day. Should have a bingo for how many Toon fans don’t make it because they fell asleep in the bar, after a long session. 🙂 Strange time to ko on a bank holiday, but Sky always get there way to I suppose. Anyway, back to the game. Hope Watford wake up this half and make a game of it. Mind, two subs made in the first twelve minutes didn’t help their cause.

I like the right side of that team. Yedlin and Ritchie has loads of creative potential. As long as they’re not too busy dealing with Forestieri..

I have never once claimed to know what’s in his contract and as far as I can see the squad looks very competitive. The ‘purple’ policy did not allow for competition for places.

    Yeah, come on, Palace!

I hope we don’t play the same system without Shelvey; it won’t work with our alternative players.

I say play a 4-4-2…Shef Wed deffo won’t be expecting it.

    Yedlin – Lascelles – Clarke – Dummett

    Ritchie – Diame – Hayden – Gouffran

    Mitro – Gayle

Going for 3-0 to us 🙂

And yet it still appears that there are plenty of players on our books who look unlikely ever to get a run in the team.
    Plus ca change.

I think the right flank should always be Yedlin behind Ritchie. That duo is definitely a mouth-watering prospect. Now that Anita will hopefully move central that should mean that Yedlin is the clear number one in the RB spot. We’ll see of course, but I think it’s the right move. I’m feeling a big win today, 4-0.

But we’ll never have to play a RB as a CB or a right sided midfielder as a LB with the squad we’ve got or force a CB to play at RB just because he is coded “purple”.

The fact that Daryl Murphy is unlikely to start a game while everyone is fit just shown the policy has been changed, there is absolutely not a chance in hell he would have been signed before Rafa came in.

Yeah bang on, me too. Anita has performed solidly this season and Rafa clearly thinks he’s the safer bet at right back. But I do love watching Yedlin with the pace he has. Hard grafter as well. A bit more positional nous and he will be a top player I reckon.

I’ve got Anita in at CM filling Shelveys boots so hopefully we’ll see Yedlin tonight.

    Be honest here, Jail.
The greatest alteration has been that we respect and trust Rafa as a talented trier way beyond what we expected to see this club again.
That in itself is a huge change. Not one the club actively sought, but rather fell into their laps.
Observing Ashley’s other business shows that he is prepared to bow to external pressure, as long as he retains control of the limited changes he is prepared to make.
The biggest complaint of the City and shareholders in still that he conceals the extent of his influence.
The real transformation has been in the buzz around the club. Rafa can say things previous managers would have fallen under immediate suspicion for saying.
A rare PR triumph, and hopefully much more in time.

Yeah Jail I reckon those two positions you mention are nailed on for the evening. Can’t see what else Rafa can do with the lineup without completely destabilising it.

    I am not being vicious.
Are we not debating serious points without acrimony here?

Rafa has nor asked Ashley to make any sacrifices yet.
He has done nothing Ashley could not have rubbed his hands at…reduced the wage bill, cleared the sick bay, and is right on course for promotion back into the money pot.
Significantly, and to the surprise of many, Rafa is still answering to the same team as McCardew. He has denied that he “ranks” them in any way.
He is yet to ask them an awkward question.
Let’s see what “assurances” (beyond contract protection) he has when he starts to ask for things that cost proper money.
