Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player In Disastrous Defeat?

It was yet another stunning defeat at St. James’ Park tonight and this time it was Sheffield Wednesday who for the second year running beat us 1-0 at home.

Last year it was in the League Cup and this year it was in the Championship.

We have already had too many shocking defeats at a packed-out St. James’ Park this season – that’s now four league games we have lost at home already this season after we lost none at home in our promotion season seven years ago.

So much for St. James’ Park being a fortress this season.

A dejected Matt Ritchie at the end of the game tonight

Here’s what the table looks like after today’s game, which was the worst result possible for us and the better team won on the night.

Like I said at half time Mitrovic for Colback and 4-4-2. The only time they looked uncomfortable was those last ten minutes. We just played into their hands for 80 minutes. We need to play Diame in the deeper role where he’s more comfortable.

That was quite possibly the most infuriating match I’ve watched in a while.

Simple passes gone astray, hoofing it within the first 5mins, Gayle getting bullied, Diame anonymous, Colback his usual shite self, even Lascelles gave it away at least 3 times in the first half.

In total a very bad day at the office for us.

    Not at the races.

Dummett just knows how to stifle any momentum and that gives the opposition time to regroup at the back. You need to put teams on the back foot and Atsu was the only one who seemed to understand that.
Diame plays for 5 minutes then seems disinterested, he should have come off earlier. Mitro gets 10 minutes – come on Rafa that’s just not long enough to make an impression. Colback is no substitute for Shelvey who would at least keep the opposition guessing.
There can be no more complacency as the likes of Wednesday and Brighton now how to turn on the after burners and play with some tempo when tags opportunity arises.
Friday is a massive game now as we need to put some distance again between the top two and third place, otherwise it gets very uncomfortable.

And where’s Gouffran in all this ? Solid enough but earlier on in the season he was much more adventurous and scoring , now he seems to be coached into a role that’s less productive.

Are we missing Cathro for some reason ?

Time to off load the none contibutors : Hanley, Haidara, Tiote & Perez if we can get good money for him.
Badly need a class playmaker especially in absence of Jonjo , a CB who will be good enough for the Prem & someone to give something different who could change a game. Like Tom Ince from Derby. Otherwise if we do manage to get up we will need 10 or 11 or we’ll struggle.Imperative we finish in top 2 as on tonight’s performance we don’t have enough to battle through the playoffs.

Are some folk doubting the Rafalution.Seems that we have a multi-million aire owner who is a known wrong-un and a right hand man who at best can be described as a pencil sharpener. Is Rafa not wanting to jump on Ashley’s bandwaggon till a proper job comes along

I quite like playing Dummett and Gouffran away from home as teams turn games into a battle and they put the foot in but at home we need to be more expansive from kick off on both flanks

Our only hope was pass it to Richie, Diame or Gayle who were getting fouled and marked out the game we needed a lot more to open them up

People will say the players let Rafa and the fans down but no its the team selection that has done it hes picked a team with a lot of grafters and limited ability everyone knows what Colback , Dummet, Gouffran and Hayden can do so all Wednesday did was marked Richie and Diame out the game and let the lesser players have plenty of the ball

Rafa should have seen this at half time and made changes but no Wednesday actually realised the game was there to be won and attacked us even more without Darlow that would have been embarrassing

Just got back from the game….

    ….and i am fuming.

Although we were far from great we bossed this. Shef Wed: where they say ‘tough’ replace with ‘dirty as f…’. The ref waved on every cynical foul and handball (of which there was so many I thought I was watching an Eagles game) – it was unbelievable.

Only Hayden and Darlow come away with any credit.

The ref was pure gash but did do a decent job as a centre half for Wednesday by getting in the way of our players on numerous occasions.

Absolutely gutted and my Boxing Day is ruined.

    But there’s always Friday! Hahaha!

You do realise that Shelvey has played PL football and has already impressed at that level. Where are people getting all this stuff about Shelvey being found out, if we move up a division.

Well that game went exactly as I predicted in the first half. SW would keep pressing, we would not cope and they would score. We would continue much the same and sub much too late. Only bit I got wrong was that I thought they would get a second just like Wolves.
I can see why others have lost patience with Rafa in the past as he is stubborn.
    Darlow. 10
Anita 7. He did try and made himself available as much as he could but never once got goal side of FB. Yedlin please.
    Lascalles 6.
Clark 7. Much like Lazcalles but did try to sortie upfield. As others have observed none of the back four pass the ball anywhere near quick enough.
Dummett 4. Every side that comes has him dissed and they press him mercilessly.
Also beaten easily first half and they should have scored from it.
Ritchie. Too slow and lost without Yedlin.tries but ineffective 5.
Diame 6. Did turn his marker two or three times and run at opponents but not great.
Hayden. 5. Everything he does is that tiny bit too slow. That’s why Wenger let him go.
Colback 5. Perhaps rusty but cannot recall a pass of note and not a single tackle.
Gouffran 4. What is he for?
Gayle. 7, but not given any chance to do better.
Atsu 8. Gave us some bite and hope, and tracked back. And I’m not generally a fan.
Mitrovic 9. Won the ball back, drew fouls and won half a dozen headers in the 15 mins he was on. Their defenders had no idea how to handle him.
    Perez. 2. Hopeless.

We had no advanced midField and moved the ball so slowly from side to side that there was no penetration there. So the ball was hoofed at Gayle and Diane who won nothing.
It was a game tailor made for Mitro and 4-4-2.
I am starting to get worried.

    Stan Anderson,
Rafa is still atop manager getting more out of the team than the sum of its parts. But you may have a point about him jumping on The fat mans bandwagon. We will know more if he buys nobody in the window. We need a proper full back and some creation in midfield.

    Load of F**ckin bull
    Best team won
our fought us out muscled us
Broke at pace and with at least 3 or four getting forward

If not for Darlow we would of been humiliated

Clueless from the start on the back foot from the first minute and we had kick off – sideways backwards took us 3-4 minutes from our kick off to get in their half – set the pattern for the game

RAFA for f**k sake change this one up front at home
RAFA for F**k sake change playing Gayle up front alone and HOOFING the ball high.

    merit marks
Darlow 10 for keeping us in the game with a string of first class saves
Dummet 5 to slow on the ball scared shitless when they attacked
Lascalles 5 can defend but hasn’t a clue what to do with the ball takes to many touches pass sideways and backwards
Clark 5 gain OK defending but as above – missed two headers which he should of done better
Anita 8 had a good game defended well and attacked well but had no or little help
    Colback 5 slow and ponderous
Hayden 3 crap got caught in possession time and time again and when he had the ball did not know what to do with it
Goufran 6 Did OK but not up to his recent performances
Ritchie 5 lot of huff and puff with no end product.
Diame 5 – nothing absolute nothing from him today
Gayle 7 felt sorry for him got kick all day long ran his butt off but had little or no help

Perez 1 absolute hopeless – lost the plot
Mitrovic 7 gave it a go, at least showed some muscle and movement up front
Atsu 6 give it a go but takes the wrong option too many times.

Referee 4 poor but the term have got to get use to the standard in this league
RAFA 5 – fans in Gallowgate getting a tad restless at the same old one up front – needed to make substitutions earlier than the 62 minute

What I have seen lately we are going to struggle to win automatic promotion if we put in many more performances of late.

Wednesday committed 23 fouls and the ref was still lenient on the decisions and a lack of yellow cards for fouls that disrupt momentum. A few more cards and they would have had to be more cautious and that would have allowed us more space and momentum. As it us they came with a plan and got away with it – in part due to poor referring ( again ) and in part by our lack of intent. Isolate Ritchie and the goals dry up. Where were the driven low crosses into the box or passes into space that he thrives on. Dummett is killing any attacking intent until it’s too late on games. Colback was over cautious. Diane disinterested . Too many lacking the passion and physical commitment needed. Shake it up Rafa .

Why do you have to ask who is our best player when we lose like this? No one fcukin cares the team was sh1te!
Without Jonjo or a quality creator we should go direct wit Mitro up front with Gayle!
But it is essential that we get a creative mid fielder to back up Jonjo!

jimiley, I actually wonder if we may have stayed up last season had Shelvey played more. I know he wasn’t as fit as he is now, but his game isn’t completely reliant on bursting past players, he can make the ball do the work.

Apparently we got Shelvey for a bargain too:

“Newcastle’s £12m purchase of Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was the best-value signing of the January transfer window, according to a study.

Analysis from the CIES Football Observatory says the 23-year-old England international is worth £23.5m.”
