Fans React To Poor Performance And Disastrous Result

Newcastle fans were rightly disappointed at the result last night when our lads conspired to lose once again at home in front of a sell-out crowd of over 52,000 fans.

What’s that about?

We were second best on the night – so we hope it’s just one of those nights – but we are a little worried nevertheless.

Another bus – it’s like Haymarket here this morning!!!!
Main culprit for last night has to be RAFA – too negative.
Also why did our players not join in the free for all – in rugby they call it playing the ref!

How I saw it last n night when I got in

Still angry at the crap we dished out

Same old play week in week out at home – slow slow slow no zip, no passing the ball quickly, too many touches on the ball, one up front sideways backwards – HOOF very little penetration wide and when we do we either don’t get the ball past the first defender or we work the ball backwards to the half way line

    Load of F**ckin bull
    Best team won
our fought us out muscled us
Broke at pace and with at least 3 or four getting forward

If not for Darlow we would of been humiliated

Clueless from the start on the back foot from the first minute and we had kick off – sideways backwards took us 3-4 minutes from our kick off to get in their half – set the pattern for the game

RAFA for f**k sake change this one up front at home
RAFA for F**k sake change playing Gayle up front alone and HOOFING the ball high.

WHEN WILL OUR TEAM LEARN TO MOVE OFF THE BALL,
    CARRY IT
RUN AT THE OPPOSITION WITH PACE

INSTEAD OF GOING SIDEWAYS BACKWARDS WITH THE PACE OF A SLUG

DON’T GET NUMBERS FORWARD WHEN WE ATTACK – SO SLOW

    merit marks
Darlow 10 for keeping us in the game with a string of first class saves
Dummet 5 to slow on the ball scared shitless when they attacked
Lascalles 5 can defend but hasn’t a clue what to do with the ball takes to many touches pass sideways and backwards
Clark 5 gain OK defending but as above – missed two headers which he should of done better
Anita 8 had a good game defended well and attacked well but had no or little help
    Colback 5 slow and ponderous
Hayden 3 crap got caught in possession time and time again and when he had the ball did not know what to do with it
Goufran 6 Did OK but not up to his recent performances
Ritchie 5 lot of huff and puff with no end product.
Diame 5 – nothing absolute nothing from him today
Gayle 7 felt sorry for him got kick all day long ran his butt off but had little or no help

Perez 1 absolute hopeless – lost the plot
Mitrovic 7 gave it a go, at least showed some muscle and movement up front
Atsu 6 give it a go but takes the wrong option too many times.

Referee 4 poor but the term have got to get use to the standard in this league
RAFA 5 – fans in Gallowgate getting a tad restless at the same old one up front – needed to make substitutions earlier than the 62 minute

What I have seen lately we are going to struggle to win automatic promotion if we put in many more performances of late.

And if we do Ashley has to spend big as we will come straight back down!!!!

My take on last night bud is that it just shows how way off we are for the Pl again.
To many getting carried away with the Rafa revolution…..When all the glaring trade marks of last season are there for all to see.
We still have not sorted the right back position out and are playing last seasons second fiddle to Janmaat there.
Dummett is still pants and gets skinned virtually every game and is no where near a premiership defender.
Gouffran is probably having his best season for us but that’s because he’s found his level….Championship at best.
Take shelvey out and we have no creativity within the squad.
Take Gayle out and we have no natural scorer in the team.
Mitrovic is playing….What third choice to Gayle and Perez nowadays. If he’s not good enough for the championship then he aint good enough for the PL.
Perez…Was supposed to have been bought for the development squad but was deemed good enought to go straight into the first team. Showed fleeting glimpses of promise at first, But has gone backwards big time.Sell-Sell-Sell.
Richie for all his hard work and Crosses, How often or whenever do you see him go by players like a Ben arfa or a Knockaart.
The ginger Pirlo…again puts in effort but offers nothing even in the Championship.
    Sels-Gamez-Murphey-Grant-Llazzar?? disaster buys under Rafa.
The only shining lights this season that i would take into the PL are Hayden-Gayle and Lascelles

Toontaff has it, they were tight on every player, gave us no time. As Charlie says this has to be countered by moving the ball quickly.
On the other hand we stood off them far too much, you would have thought that the whole team was on five yellows. No pressure, cannot recall any of their players getting buffeted, they were allowed far too much time and room. This with two “DMs” in the team!
Because our players were being harried they eventually hoofed it – at Gayle, Ritchie or Gouffran, with inevitable result.
No penetration on wings, Ritchie has been sussed, dreadfully slow. Just stand off him a yard and he is ineffective. And when did Gouffran ever beat his man?
Our best 1:1 players are Atsu and Yedlin, neither started.
When Mitro and Atsu were on we looked a different team but Mitro only came on at 80 mins.

so long as we play only one way we will keep losing like this.

I resisted the temptation to come on and vent after the game last night. Lots of hysterical knee jerking interspersed with some good analysis in my opinion, but we are all fans I guess, hence emotional.
I think it’s well known that we struggle to get up the pitch with any tempo when Colback and Hayden play as a pair. We very much need Ritchie Gouff and Diame to be sharp and proactive when we put out this lineup. They weren’t.
Colback did what he does – he is not nor ever will be a Shelvey. I fail to see why he has received the lions share of the blame. It’s about favourites and scapegoats, once again. Hayden was far worse in his movement, passing, ball retention and positional awareness than Colback, but only a few picked up on this.

First half the fans were noisy, mainly down to he ref’s display but also a few chances.
Second half was like a library in the Gallowgate. We started so poor the second half neither the team or the crowd got going!
Rafa has to try 2 up front against Forest? Please!!!
Mitro must be starting to wonder, 0-1 down, 10 minutes left, Perez on before him!

It appears after last night’s gamer that too many players don’t have the mental strength to play at a full St. James Park. Hence the number of home losses. Sort em’ out Rafa and get rid.
I’ll say it once more – with Colback and Dummett in the same team we are going NOWHERE fast. Neither have a an ounce of football brain and seem to be mesmerised when the ball lands at their feet. In particular you can almost hear the cogs slowly turning when Dummett finds himself in possession.
    Not good enough Rafa.
A replacement is also needed for Shelvey as his absence is going to cost us big time. We have nobody to dictate play and play finely attuned passes to our attackers.
    Final mentions –
Darlow – brilliant – this lad is going to be some keeper for us. Perez – shot to pieces – get rid of him. Ritchie – flatters to deceive – regularly. Anita – competent as ever.
Gouffran – lots of hard work but beginning to go back to his previous anonymity.
Nottingham Forest is a big game for us – nothing less than 3 points will do or i can see panic starting to set in.
Happy New Year lads (at least I hope it’s going to be).

Everybody was saying that Rafa had good team selections, ok results went our way, but there was big but….We didn´t looked that we have a lot of quality, we didn´t looked like EPL team playing championship, we look like a bunch of fighters, grafters and thats it. I expected some nice football, everything is here to play nice football. In first matches he played Colback and Hayden and we lost, then he brought Shelvey, who is our best CM…I still think he isn´t playing our strongest players, for me our best defender is Mbemba, Yedlin is for sure better RB than Anita, also Lazaar is better than Dummett…Mitrovic must play as he can bully defenders, we have seen how Gayle needs him, what he can do against Norwich, Preston, QPR…also Atsu is showing that he is now a must starter here…Ritchie end product is not very good, so maybee it´s time for changes….this is for me our strongest 11 right now…..
    …………………..darlow…………………………….
    yedlin,lascelles……mbemba,lazaar
    atsu….shelvey……..hayden,ritchie
    ………mitrovic…….gayle……………
    ………………………………………………
when we will start with this team we will maybee start to see some nice football also, there is creativity, attacking threat, everything that should be there…………Mbemba is good with forward passes, quick, strong, for me our best defender and also we are crying for that partnership Mitro and Gayle, they seems to be ideally made for them two, one strong and tall an one quick and smart with movement, when Rafa realises it, I don´t know…

I would have played Anita in the centre, Yedlin at right back.

And if I was the ref I would have stopped their defenders coming through the back of Gayle a lot earlier than he did. Sheff wed played the ref for what he was, weak and unwilling to take proper charge. They exploited this, and to be fair attacked with pace and incision.
Diame is a problem. So inconsistent. You really don’t know wether he is gonna show up or not from game to game.

The talk in the ground was very much how the manager got it wrong by playing Colback and Hayden together not making subs quick enough. What thou shall not do though is sing very loudly at him you don’t know what you’re doing which is pretty much what you’ve been doing since he got here.

The one consolation I can see from last night’s poor performance is that it has come at the beginning of the transfer window.
If Rafa doesn’t have a plan B for when Shelvey is missing, and he didn’t appear to have one yesterday, then we need another playmaker bought in.
Shelvey could come back following his ban, take a bad knock and be out for another half dozen games, and it is pretty clear that without someone of his ability in the side, we’ll be struggling to get out of this division.
Looking further ahead, should we get promoted, Ashley’s going to have to dig pretty deep to come up with a side which is going to be competitive in the PL.

Rafas post match comment indicates to me that his main priority is to stop the opposition scoring. His attention was peaked by our inability to stop them counter attacking and in his mind if we could have successfully blocked them off we would have drawn the game 0-0.

In order to counter them scoring a goal and our inability to prevent their offensive tactic, Rafa puts on Atsu presumably to carry the ball forward quicker but does not alter the balance of the side.

Unfortunately for Charlie we all saw it yesterday – all be it on TV – so we can make our own minds up.

I understand your frustration but your criticism is way over the top like so many on here.

We have one bad game and they come slithering out thee woodwork (not you Charlie)

Phrases like “Dummett scared shitless” or ” pants” are just too silly.

There was one time in the first half when Liam Palmer skinned him with aid of a lucky high bounce and PD just tracked him back and pressured him and I thought “The Pre Rafalite Dummett would have draggged him down and given away a pen or free kick”

Paul Tierney although being called a PL ref usually gets the dross to officiate – he has never reffed a top notch PL game and yesterday we saw why .

Their 6 yellows to our one tells its own story SW got away with murder yesterday.

Wednesday did a smash and grab at SJP and won’t be the last team to do it.

In the second half 50,000 Geordies were totally outsung and outchanted by 2,000 Yorkshiremen.

Clearly if Rafa had known how bad the officiating was going to be he would have gone 4-4-2 and gone toe to toe with SW.

Poor result and disastrous performance. The other way around Ed!
We used to be a team that imploded from season to season. You know, 5th top one season and 5th bottom the next. Now we seem to be capable of imploding mid season. It all started with Kevin in 1996. I hope that Rafa is not about to lead us into a second half blow out. We have some tough away games coming up for our grinders. Flair is in short supply.

If Rafa had alternative tactics to compensate for Shelvey’s absence I hadn’t noticed it. It was clear at the end of the first half that our game plan wasn’t working and theirs was and very effectively.

Whilst it is easy with the benefit of hindsight I still think Rafa should have made changes earlier than he did. Atsu and Mitrovich were making a difference but it was too late. I’m sure Yedlin would have made a difference too.

Not much to say that has not been said before, we were just poor. Could not put 5 decent passes together without Shelvey, which is scary prospect considering what many calls the strongest championship team in the last 20 to 30 years.

For me Rafa just got this one way wrong and he thought that we would be ok and be allowed to dictate the game. After 20 minutes you could see that was not going to be the case. They passed, pressed and just bullied out players and they could not deal with it.

This was very similar to last season. Could not create anything and that has to be a worry. These are also the games I said previously where you see how ineffective Gayle can be and why he struggles in the premiere league. When you don’t dominate possession and this will happen a lot next year, their is no outball for our players. Once they could not pass through them they hoofed it upfront and gayle I think only held the ball up once the entire game.

This is where you need a target man to help get you up the pitch. Secondly if Rafa does not fancy Mitro then fine, but atleast put Murphy on the bench and change it up after 55 minutes or so. That’s now I think 9 games when he brought Mitro on in the 80th minute. its like a pre plan. Mitro gets 10 minutes. How many chances can you get in that time? Its to easy to read, I know its going to happen and sure as hell they know what is coming.

Also just a thought but I think Mbemba has played dm before as well and he could be utilized in that role as well and has a better passing aray as well and he can control the ball far better that a colback or Hayden. Maybe worth a shot to change things up.

The ref was so lenient, surely our players should have realised and got stuck in, as well!
People keep calling for Hazaar, woof, woof, but so far he looks poor, so Dummett will play! Again, Dummett and Ginger Jack get all the flack – Jack has a bad eye, at present, the eye for the forward pass! Hayden was not as bad as some are saying, I actually had him as our best player outfield, but then I was well liquered up, last night!!!

Not enough praise has been given to SW. They got it right in almost every department. It was a brilliant away performance and if we had done that away I’m sure we would be ecstatic.

I thought only people at the game could read the match? And that the opinions of those watching on TV were near enough worthless?
Isn’t it also possible that those “slithering out of the woodwork” are the fabled “silent majority”, rather more inclined to say what they see than the pontificating Daily Dozen?
It’s good to see so many different opinions.

Regarding Mitro, there’s surely got to be something more behind holding back Mitro till ten minutes left, as has been happening. A January sale seems the obvious reason.
The value of Mitro coming on earlier to get the 50,000 in full voice would surely make sense as he does have a rousing effect on our fans.

Wednesday committed 23 fouls that were given and there were more that were ignored.
Many were niggly disruptive fouls that deliberately broke up play and were reminiscent of Man Utd under Fergie – push the boundaries until the ref says otherwise and in the meantime take advantage of the position. That’s exactly what Wednesday did and if the ref had issued yellows early in the game which he should have done then that would have stopped those antics.
That apart Wednesday were in the meantime stronger and more purposeful knowing that our rhythm was disrupted.
Pretty play doesn’t win games , we need to mix it with teams and not be bullied.
Dummett retreats most of the time and halts any forward flow.
Diame should be bossing games but doesn’t seem see to have the inclination or stamina.
Mitro can’t change a result with 10minutes left and I seem to recall that when he used to play earlier in games he at least occupied two defenders almost on his reputation alone.
Gayle with his back to goal is an easy target for defenders and needs to be running forwards into space to be fed passes – that’s where his goals come from.

I asked earlier – are we missing Cathro ? Players need a coach in and around them to push and motivate them just before and during game time .

Armchair critic – yes for sure, but I/we pay good money to support NUFC and players need to do more to show their commitment to winning.

The atmosphere was great first half, but second half I thought news had broken that another singer had kicked the proverbial bucket!! I thought Gayle was coming too deep, especially second half, whereas his movement off the ball is usually the biggest thing to note, live.

I’m afraid I sound a bit toonbrotherish on wor jack, but putting him in midfield instead of Shelvey is like pouring oil into the washing up water. “Hard yards” ha ha what tripe. Clearly unfit, clearly muzzled going forward, clearly unable to make a creative or incisive pass. Next dummet fools by the bounce ho ho but strangely the same bounce didn’t fool his opponent, probably because he was awake. Nothing at all going forward. Gouffran, not bad when he’s playing toward the middle of the park, but no more than a wide playing g colback when playing on the wing. Most of the time he was the spare man running around withoutanyone to mark but when we were in position he couldn’t find space to save his life. Ritchie looked poorer than he should because his support from anita (and the rest of the team) was decidedly vanilla. These aren’t things a ma ager can do much about once they have planted boots on the pitch, any more than the trainer can run for the greyhound. Xmas pudding performance is all. Should have realised what was about to happen when the lads were warming up before ko. Laughing and joking about what they got from Santa not so much firing up for an important match.

I agree with you on that point I guess the next couple of games will tell us exactly how this one will play out. either he will see some more game time as we will not dominate possession and should be the obviously change to the team so we have more physical presence upfront and hopefully have Gayle playing off him in Diames role in a 4231 as Rafa does not do 442 it seems.

Or he will be sold to a premier league team, which is what really gets me. As clearly other teams higher up sees the same things some of us are seeing. Last night when he came on he tried but It almost felt like his fire was gone a bit. Not the normal passion of earlier on in the season.

I will trust Rafa decision but my personal opinion is still that he is our best striker and with the right delivery he will cause most defenses in championship and Premier league problems.

The bigger question is who do you replace him with in January, the names we have been linked with does not feel like an improvement to me. Secondly none has championship or premier league experience

“…. colback sterling hard work and dummett sturdy defensive work should make them automatic choices…’

This begs the question, shouldn’t more attack minded (but less defend minded) players play in home games ?

As good as Goof has been this season, Atsu showed what might have been if he had played the full 90 minutes. Same is true (to an extent) of Mitrovich.
