Dwight Gayle Brace Gives Newcastle Vital Victory

Now that’s more like it as Newcastle got their 17th win of the season tonight at St. James’ Park against Nottingham Forest and go back to the top of the Championship table with Brighton’s game against Cardiff City being postponed because of fog.

The Reading vs Fulham game was also abandoned at half time because of fog.

This was not Newcastle’s best performance, but it was a game we had to win and the result was more important than the performance tonight, and it was an excellent 3 points for the lads as they saw out the win.

Dwight Gayle scores 3rd goal

In front of another capacity crowd of over 52,000  Newcastle got off to a great start after only four minutes and it was Matt Ritchie from a free kick who scored, although his shot took a deflection and the ball easily beat goalkeeper Stojkovic.

That was exactly the start Newcastle needed to calm the nerves after failing to score last time out against the Owls.

But disaster struck in the 29th minutes when Forest equalized and it was a very poor goal to concede as Nicolao Dumitru pounced on a misunderstanding at the back and scored.

It was 1-1 at the half and the goal from Forest blunted Newcastle’s challenge and the game was even from then until the half-time whistle.

Then we got a little bit of luck in the game when Mills was shown a yellow card after the hour mark and he was sent off after he reacted violently to getting the yellow.

Maybe that was a little payoff for what happened at the City Ground?

Before taking the decision referee Keith Stroud conferred with the fourth official but that was a huge lift for Newcastle.

It was that man Dwight Gayle again who put Newcastkle ahead with  a nice goal just three minutes later as he brilliantly volleyed the ball home from a good Ciaran Clark cross – a real opportunist goal from Dwight.

And then in the 80th minute to take any nerves away from the crowd Gayle scored his 19th goal of the Championship season after being set up by Matt Richie, who had an excellent game tonight especially in those final 45 minutes.

The lads basically got the job done tonight – a win – that’s what we desperately needed.

A goal from Ritchie and two from Gayle was enough for all three points so Rafa should be happy enough – well part from their goal.

Teams:

Newcastle: Darlow; Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett; Hayden, Colback (Diame, 67); Ritchie (Lazaar, 83), Perez, Atsu; Gayle (Mitrovic, 88).
Subs not used: Sels, Anita, Mbemba, Gouffran.

Nottingham Forest: Stojkovic, Cash, Mills, Hobbs, Lam (Ahmedhodzic, 84), Lichaj, Kasami, Osborn, Pereira, Dumitru (Assombalonga, 73), Bendtner (Vaughan, 81).

Subs not used: Henderson, Carayol, Grant, Vellios.

Referee: Keith Stroud (Hampshire)
Attendance: 52,228

I screwed up the initial poll here’s the new one – please vote again.

Put it this way lads the only team in this division that has a very bright future (in terms of what they could do in the prem) is us.

World class manager. Best squad in this league. Good financial backing, and we are now starting to build a decent infrastructure.

Come the summer, providing we finish top, we have all the resources to become a real decent premier league team.

    You’re comparing rafa to hughton?

Hughton inherited a squad with leaders, nolan, butt, barton, smith etc.

Rafa has built us a squad with character and leaders. He has single handedly reconnected the club with the fans, he has given us reason to dream and be optimistic.

I loved hughton, but nowhere near as much as i love rafa.

Could hughton attract the players that rafa will attract? Jesus no he couldnt. The fact that Ritchie, Gayle, Yedlin, Diame all sacrificed premier league football to come and play for us says it all. They see the potential with this club.

it’s lose, not loose and loser , not looser.

did rafa not win the europa league with chelsea quite recently.

as lilo said, many managers are defensive now and succesful and i don’t necessarily agree that rafa is always defensive.

hey we could have the likes of pardew, mclaren, carver, but no we have a top man and people still bleating on, even being on top and scoring more goals than anyone else in all 4 divisions.

why don’t we hear from you people when we are winning 4-0, 6-0 etc. fickle or what…!

it sickens me that some people want us to lose under rafa to make a point. i’m with the guys who chanted rafa’s name for 90 mins to keep him here.

the home support is just so bad atm its actually embarrassing. it was 1-1, and could hear boos at half time, the whinging moaning and groaning when one mistake is made.

Adults or not, anyone would feel pressure to play in the current home atmosphere if we’re not 1-0 up by 20 mins. Wish the fans would just show a bit more “support” rather than just turning up expecting us to hammer everyone 3-0. Away support though is arguably some of the best in the country, its just a shame we cant make SJP a cauldron of noise and fear, it usually is when we play big teams, but just isnt consistent

I don’t think there is a love in for mitro, just common sense when ppl would rather see him play ahead of Perez especially at home. As for Rafa’s credentials it’s shocking that anyone would question this, I do have a concern though over the players we are being linked with…..should he be building for more championship dross or should he be aiming for the prem and targets that would do well in that league.

Without shelvey and no creativity because of this then we should look at the wings for deliveries for both Gayle and mitro as starters…..because colback and Hayden along with Perez can’t create even if the opposing side had no one on the pitch.

The likes of rotonda won’t have a bad word uttered about selections or tactics it seems, comes as a bit of a surprise because others haven’t had the same grace, but when rafa is wrong he should be called out on it irrelevant of his record……on the subject of his record he should never be subjected to abuse because that record he has is outstanding.

Also for those rafa critics, have you not seen the drastic change in our away form. We were so bad in the last 3/4 years away from home, we looked scared, couldnt control games or have any game management, we’re totally the opposite under rafa, in fact we’re probably better away from home.

Hughton came in total mess here, we had Owen,Martins,Viduka,Beye,Bassong all out of that team. He made strong core from english players, you think that manage characters like Barton was easy?
Rafa made his team, he also has stronger position than Hughton had, he choose his players, also has bigger budget, which players they brought Simpson and Lovenkrands…sorry but for me Rafa has to promote first and then you can say he has achieved same as Hughton….

    We are having a bit of a wobble. It that was a good win to grind out and the other contender’s games being called off was great for us as they now have z backlog and we have a good lead over 3rd;
    = 10 points!
Howay the lads let’s get behind them!?

Rafa is far better than Hougton, but Hougton did very well getting us up and getting us to mid table in the prem before getting the sack. As for the lads you listed that joined us they joined us because of the size of the club and support as much as the man managing us. I couldn’t say for sure if they’d join if someone else was in charge.

As for which team is in a better position going up…..Brighton don’t have Mike Ashley, Ashley once he gets the cash again could just as easily do a 180 and go back to the dark days again…..with him in charge anything is possible

Some of the comments on this blog are horrendous. Gayle scores a brace and even after is still getting an absolute bashing? RunAway what makes you think that Gayle is not a team player? He is top scorer and a team player.

Booboo hasn’t watched a day of football in his life from his comments…..

Take today for what it was, a win, 3 points, and staying in an auto promotion position heading into the new year, bring on the next game.

our toon ”and the likes of you” (very rude and ignorant comment that)

Not saying that rafa can’t be criticised but it’s a bit choice when we are top of the league and top scorers.

there’s enough of you wanting and waiting for him to fail, just pick a more appropriate time and in the meantime show a little class and appreciation.

of course I am talking of achieve something for Newcastle and to call me mackem, because I have other opinion than you is funny. I am not saying Rafa is all bad, but I can see he has also his weaker points and adapting to situation is one of them, without Shelvey we constantly look weak, we cant create and he is still playing same style like with him, thats what I think is wrong. If you have playmaker like Shelvey on the pitch you know, that he will create something, but when you dont have him, you have to adapt and find solution how to attack…

Rafa best manager we have had in years but for all his positives he still has a few negatives. Trying the same tactics at home as we do away has shown in our numerous losses at St James that it may not be working. Away we are brilliant get the job done well at home score try to hold on?????

Playing Perez who just isn’t even championship standard regularly with constant poor performances, whilst others will have a good game and then dropped. We have the best manager and best squad in the league we are top so happy days. Going up will we need a Huge improvement in the calibre of players we have on show Clark,Dummett,Lascelles,Colback,Hayden,Gouffran,Anita,Perez,Mitro,Sels, are not decent Prem type players they’re championship players.

They are dived and feigned injury at every opportunity especially their no.22.

    Cnuts.

its funny how we are celebrating, that we are better than Reading, Sheffield or Huddersfield…Most fans over the world even dont know that these teams exist. When we will be back in the EPL, that will be test of Rafa. We have seen when we played Hull, the worst EPL team, that we couldnt beat them. So I will wait and then I will judge Rafa. But if fans cant write their opinions, then for what is this blog for?
Regarding Gayle, I love his attitude, I love his style, but in some matches he needs more support as we have seen, he is sometimes isolated, Perezs form is nowhere, Diame for me still lacks stanima….
