Newcastle Make Gains In The Championship

After losing 3 points on Boxing Day to the six teams immediately below us in the Championship we have gained some points today following the completion of the end of year fixtures.

In the early game, 4th placed Huddersfield Town could only draw 1-1 at home to 3rd bottom Blackburn Rovers – who Newcastle play at Ewood Park on Monday night; the Terriers are 9 points behind Newcastle.

Derby County drew at home 0-0 with second bottom Wigan and are 12 points behind us and Sheffield Wednesday, after their win at St. James Park on Monday night, came back with an equalizer in the 94th minute to draw 1-1 at Preston North End.

The Owls are 11 points behind Newcastle in 6th place.

And Norwich City are still finding it hard going at the moment with a 0-0 draw at Brentford and the Canaries have only two wins in their last 12 league games.

The results today really do show in the Championship there are no easy games and the bottom sides seem to be able to draw or win against higher placed sides – each game seems to be a battle.

Next up for Newcastle are Blackburn Rovers on Monday and they beat us 1-0 on 26th November to break our 9 game winning streak.

It would be an excellent result for us if we can win this game at Ewood Park – but it will not be easy.

Here’s the latest standings at the top of the league after today’s games.

No point buying players at this point unless they are excellent. So another Darryl Murphy type signing is pointless. Rafa will need to get rid of at least half of the team assuming we go up. Guys like lazier, if they can’t make a serious impression at this level, have sod all to offer at prem level. This is why Bobby bee and myself wanted us to sign prem players at the start of the season, so the quality wud shine through, although this ain’t easy

Gallowgate is usually rocking and that’s where all the flag waving and singing comes from as well.
Platinum and Milburn where I’ve been sitting for over 20 year has unfortunately lost its voice.

Anyone think the pull of Rafa could get us the Schnied from Man U? Maybe on loan with an option to buy? He’d be an automatic starter and class above what we have in midfield.

Mourinho rejected a bid of £13 million for him from Pulis yesterday.

That only really helps establish a starting point for bids. Jose might be happy to loan him as he’ll get games and be learning from a world class coach. He’d possibly sell him to us as we are not a competitor. All it would take is us offering a solid bid and convincing the player…plus offering him big wages.

There’s equally talented midfielders that Rafa could get from Europe direct for a lower fee and less wages that haven’t been spoiled by seasons in the PL.

You can’t get top epl players in the Championship. We did well to get the ones we did. Any signings will be to add balance. I can’t see us signing a better player than say Diame to understudy Shelvey for example, unless is a kid from the continent or loanee. Maybe we could do with a winger, but getting players in now only makes it more difficult to reshape in the off season, when we will need to and want to.

Why can’t we attract pl quality players while we are top of the champers and seemingly pl bound?

Because you’d have to throw money at the few who would consider dropping a level. Rafa has been canny in the market. I expect that to continue, particularly seeing as we go into the New Year top.

We have an EPL wage structure in the Championship as it is. I’m sure Rafa would ideally prefer to do our transfer business the off season, with greater certainty and leverage.
