Earlier tonight Sky Sports were reporting that Newcastle want to sign 24 year-old Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson in January.
This is not the first time we have been linked with Callum, with the first report surfacing around November 24th that Callum was a target, but at the time it was thought to be for a summer transfer.
However, Sky Sports are usually fairly accurate with their information, but we would be very surprised if Bournemouth are willing to let one of their best players leave in January, half way through the season.
Callum Wilson – 24 year-old Bournemouth striker
However, whether the deal can go through or not depends a lot on the player himself and in Matt Ritchie’s case he told Eddie Howe in the summer that the attraction of Newcastle was just too much.
Matt said he wanted to leave Bournemouth for Newcastle, so Howe did the deal with the Magpies.
It’s not known how much Bournemouth want for Wilson who they signed from Coventry in July, 2014 for around £3M, but it’s likely to be a lot.
Callum started his career at his home town club Coventry, where he played for a couple of seasons in the first team after coming through the youth ranks and scored 23 goals in 55 games for them.
At Bournemouth he has done very well although he was out for most of last season after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in September last year.
He didn’t return to action until late April and so far in the Premier League he has a total of 8 goals in 24 appearances with 3 of them coming this season in 11 appearances.
In Bournemouth’s promotion season of 2014-2015 he scored an excellent 23 goals in 50 appearances for the south coast club.
With Newcastle being successful with Matt Ritchie in the summer you have to believe that Matt would give Newcastle a glowing reference to his former team-mate.
It also looks like the club is going places with Rafa Benitez in charge and Newcastle are currently top of the Championship with 17 wins in 24 league games.
