Rafa Hopes For New Players In January – But The Market Strange

Rafa Benitez and Lee Charnley will be working hard in January to try to bring in two or three players who can boost our promotion drive after losing two of our last three league games and dropping down to second place in the Championship, behind Brighton.

We have been linked with a number of central midfield players as we seem to be missing Jonjo Shelvey and Rafa will try to bring in cover for the player who still has two games to serve of his five game suspension for his FA misconduct charge.

Tom Cleverley – one of Newcastle’s targets

After the surprise 1-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers yesterday Rafa was asked if there was any progress made in this month’s transfer window and this is what he said, as reported in the Shields Gazette:

“Not yet. We are trying to find the right players.”  “January is not an easy transfer window.” “Hopefully, we can do something.”

“They have to be players to give us some balance or be better than what we have at the moment. “Playing like this, I think we can win games even without these players.”

“Now it is to keep working and try to find the players,” “It’s not easy. The market is quite strange.”

“There have been a lot of changes. We have to try to find these players that will give us something different.”

One of the midfield targets we have is Everton’s Tom Cleverley who has fallen down the pecking order at the Toffees since Ronald Koeman came in last summer.

Newcastle will try to get the 27 year-old in on a loan deal with an option to buy in the summer, if he does well.

It seems we need to bolster the squad with two or three players after we have not had good results recently, losing  half of our last eight Championship games.

Whats the use buying anybody Rafa..if you’re gonna keep playing perez, gouff and dummet all the time.
Surely some manager needs to understand dummet, colback are rubbish and need to replace them with better players.
No matter how many chances we created if we played with the below team we still would have had a better chance of winning and even in the future.
    Darlow
    Yedlin Lascells Clark Lazaar
    Anita Hayden/Diame
    Atsu ritchie
    Gayle
    Mitro
Thats our best shot..come on Rafa!!

First thing we should do in January is flog Ayoze off. His development has stalled so much that it’s best he is moved on and find other clubs to continue his development.

    OK
Now that things are calming down. He’s right. If we play like that every game we will win the needed games.

We aren’t going to blow this league away, we never were going to. We’re good but not amazing. Almost every team gives us a right game, but we are a tiny notch better than the rest.

Conclusion: we must buy a couple PL level players. No messing, as in, buy players who’ll get us promoted but aren’t good enough for the PL. They are one and the same.

I know hes the devil on here but i actally voted colback as our best player.

Despite so much possession and dominance it was hard to pick one and for me it was only really the CMs that were really putting any stamp on a very ugly game.

Yes he gave away the free kick that led to our downfall but hindsight is a gift. Free kicks more often than not do not go in. Anita was caught flat footed and. Suspect many players wuldve done the same as jack.

I think we do need to change it up.

I have been a vocal defender of dummet on here because i do believe we need full backs that can defend first and foremost (especially given our reputation for leaking goals in the past) but even i cant watch him advance anymore with his only foot.

Our crossing is woeful and needs to be addressed sharp. A professional footballer should be able to lump a ball in better than a sunday league full back the that doesnt even start every game (thats me and yes i do believe i can cross better than any of our players showed yesterday)

While were on it, if we are going to cross the ball then why arent we playing a striker than can win them.

I said it about a month ago but i feel every game proves my point. Gayle is a great poacher and runner in open games but teams are bow shutting us out. When he cannot find any space which has been 3 of te lat 4 games, he offers us absolutely nothign but a whipping boy for the oppositiin defenders. I only see atsu as a player that can competently pick open a team and play in tight spaces. Lets gIve one of the bigger guys a chance.

Yesterday, something was up with diame. He asked to come off and was very sluggish. That didnt help as we need him getting between the lines and offering himself as an utlet for hayden and colback.

Our wingers were far too withdrawn. Gouffran was much better at the beginning of the season because he was peeling off his man. Hes not good at rnning from deep. He has a forwards mind which is why he is better suited to playing in a front 3.

Sometimes i think newcastle fans want to attack too much and dont undestand the defensive side of the game but the oast few weeks evn i have to agree that we need to be a bigger threat.

Were dominating games playing a risky game. If we score once, we’ll score twice once we force the opposition to try and play themselves back into games, because it creates space. But if we conceded we makeour job harder because teams are happy to sit off us knowing we cannot pick their pockets.

Teams ave laernt how to play against us so its time for a change i think.

Not sure why anyone on here thinks a premiership class player will come here in January when there is no guarantee they will keep their place once Mikey boy spends another 70 million in the summer when we get promoted.

The players that are available now who can help with the job of getting us up are going to find themselves on the side-lines come next August and they know that…so the only one’s that are going to come now are the one’s getting very game time so are in essence not good enough for the premiership anyway.

At least the Premiership players who Rafa signs in August know they will be part of Rafa’s plans…anyone who signs now won’t be.

We can get up with the squad we have now anyway…Rafa just needs to swap and change the system a bit to surprise the opposition and take the initiative and keep going.

Can’t agree wholeheartedly with your argument there. The players who’ll promote us, if they do, are all goners? And we’ll rebuild from scratch when-if we are promoted? I don’t think it works that way.

i feel colback is being scapegoated a lot. don’t get me wrong, he is not good enough at this level, and the foul was so clumsy, but should darlow not be saving a ball to the side he is defending? should we not have put away at least one of the great chances we had?
absolutely baffled by the gouffran criticism too- I swear only five games ago people were calling for him to be signed up on a new deal; he has contributed a lot this season and fans should not be so fickle to boot him out again when he has the odd average game

Cyprus…not saying that…I’m saying a lot of money is going to get spent this summer and no-one coming in January can guarantee they will be starting next year after the money has been spent.

you have to ask yourself the question…who out of the current crop is a true premiership player.

    I think 3 maybe 4

I think we as a team would look very much like a premier league side with 2-3 quality additions. Right now we look more exposed for lack of those 2-3. They would make a massive difference.

My beef with RAFA is that he never changes things – always plays with 1 up-front.

Always play with a flat back four with two centre halves – do we really need two centre halves against Blackburn and Forest.

Relies on our full-backs to get forward to be the crosses of the ball

He seems more preoccupied in stopping the opposition scoring than us scoring.

Last two games against two teams who are struggling in the Championship playing ONE up-front – for Christ sakes we were playing Blackburn and Forest who’s last wins were against us NOT Liverpool or Chelsea.

Substitutions waits until 70 minutes before making the first and that is usually Perez.

waits until 85th minute before putting on Mitrovich or Murphy

Our football is always the same slow slow build up sideways backwards which allows the opposition to get behind the ball.

Corners – we always bring eleven back behind the ball.

We should be dominated teams but we seem to huff and puff and crawl over the line letting the opposition back in to the game second half.

Birmingham game I would like to see us play a more attacking set-up with two up-front taking one out of the midfield or one centre back.

    That’s my gripe

    That’s a good question. And I don’t know the answer…
We outplayed Hull a couple weeks ago.
Some of these players have done OK in the PL. I don’t think there’s much of a gap if any between the lower PL and upper championship teams…

So, to answer, in a way. If we want to be top 8 in the PL, probably yes just 3-4 would survive.

The PL isn’t ONE level. It’s many. Me, I want to be challenging for the CL 🙂
