Newcastle completely dominated this game at Blackburn yet we somehow ended up on the losing side for the second time this season to Blackburn Rovers.
Newcastle should have won this game, but we ended up losing it and that’s not the first time we have said that this season.
We have now lost 7 of our 25 games in the Championship – which is far too many.
Rafa Benitez – Newcastle manager
Newcastle controlled the game from the kickoff and had a massive 67% of possession, but when you miss your chances and have two goals disallowed it’s always possible to lose any game.
Blackburn scored with their only shot on target in the whole game direct from a free kick after 74 minutes.
That’s what happened at Ewood Park and the result was another shock for Newcastle fans as we have now lost half of our last eight league games and seem to be faltering – at least as far as the results go.
This is what a bemused Rafa said after the game:
“The only positive is that we played against a good team, who worked very hard.”
“For me, to see the team playing so well and not winning the game is difficult to understand but we have to carry on trying to play in the same way, trying to create as many chances as today and trying to take our chances.”
“We lost, maybe for five minutes, control of the game and conceded the goal.”
“They put a lot of bodies in the box and it’s not easy to find space – but it’s difficult to explain.”
“The only thing we didn’t do is to score when we had a lot of chances, especially in the first half.
“If we continue playing like this, we will win games.”
Newcastle seem to be missing Jonjo Shelvey and that’s two defeats in the three games without him and it shows Rafa must bring in a playmaker in January as cover in case Shelvey is injured or suspended.
Tom Cleverley seems to be one of the targets, but this shock defeat will hardly help in our January recruitment drive with our next league game not until Monday, January 16th when we are at Brentford.
We need to win that game.
