Some Good News – Here’s The Match Up To 2009-2010 Season

Newcastle have just 3 points from our last 3 games over the holiday period, but back in 2009-2010 under Chris Hughton we also got three points with three draws in those corresponding fixtures.

We drew 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday – then drew 0-0 at home to Derby County and 2-2 at home to West Brom.

That was the game when Steven Taylor picked up his serious knee injury and was out for the rest of the season and in came Mike Williamson from Portsmouth for £1M.

Chris Hughton – Newcastle manager in December 2010

So it’s really good news that we are actually doing a little better than we did seven years ago.

That’s because our goal difference is slightly better, although Hughton’s  team back then had lost only three games but drawn seven, where today we have lost seven games but drawn only one.

Back then we ended up with 30 wins and four defeats for 102 points to win the Championship.

Comments welcome.

I don’t know if we have any history buffoon the TOON

Can anyone tell me if Newcastle United have won all their festive games.

    That is the games
    one before Xmas
    on Xmas Day/Boxing Day
before New Year/on New Years Day and the game straight after New Year

some seasons it would be three games some seasons would be four games

I have went back as far as the fifties and they have not won all 3 or 4 games

Dunno about anybody else but this comparison to the last time we were down is boring me to death. This league is better. We had a better first eleven back then and a better manager this time around. The reality is that it has zero bearing on this season.
Anyway, I’m away out again so carry on to your hearts content. The only thing that is the same is that we’re the biggest club by far and everybody else is just praying for us to fail. Which is all the more reason for the squabbling to stop and for every Newcastle fan to get behind the team, whether we agree or not with the tactics, and roar the Mags to promotion. Rafa will fix it, keep the faith and believe. Howay the lads.

@bobbybee, what you say is true, we did have a better team, however, we also managed to give a couple of games to Zurab K.

Former Newcastle Player Alan smith is now a caretaker manager at Notts County, Christ he’s come along way, absolute legend at Leeds United, remember him making his Leeds debut, nightmare to defend against.

    Here’s a stat.

    When we’ve scored first we’ve won 17 drawn 1 and lost 1,

When the opposition score first we’ve lost all 6

Wonderful – quite cheered me up after the Blackburn fiasco

Don’t want to steal your thunder but how about the Lady Marmalade song for BOUDEBOUZ

Boude-e-bouz coucher avec moi ..ce soir?
    Boude- e-bouz coucher avec moi?

Just have to sign this guy for the song/chant possibilities – so much easier than finding a good one for Dwight Gayle who also deserves his own memorable song

keep up the good work !

do you want to work on this Procul Harum classic, A Whiter shade of Pale

“and so it was our player
as the striker scored his goal
that his pace at first deceived them

……..scored a Dwighter shade of goal”

Last line could be an absolute toon classic …just need to see if the first lines need to be or can be reworked…

After that lets give Gayle the recognition he deserves !.

I don’t think this 16-17 Champ is better at all. There was tough competition from both WBA and Forest in 09-10 (until Forest dropped away). WBA only lost 7 games all season in the end.

Hughton then had to cobble together a team from those who decided to stay (remember the 6-1 drubbing by Orient two weeks before the season kicked off?), and he had no money to spend – unlike Rafa. As a consequence there was no depth in the team forcing him to bring in workhorse loanees like Fitz Hall to plug the gaps..

Hughton got the 1st XI playing to a system that worked, and stuck to it regardless of who was available. It was an amazing team achievement, and your attempt to dismiss that achievement to make excuses for Rafa actually does Rafa no favours. It is clear Rafa has not yet grasped the Championship, although I’m sure he will eventually.. If McLaren had been in charge with the same results to date I know his face would not be decorating Ed’s banner!!

Rafa has already lost 7 of his last Championship games 25 games. Meanwhile Hughton has lost only 7 of his last 71 with Brighton, with a far weaker (and significantly less expensively assembled) squad. I naturally wish Rafa well, but that does not exempt him from scrutiny.

I made a comment about our abysmal xmas period record some days ago and was wondering if we could lift that particular curse. Seemingly not it would appear.

Still that’s behind us now, time to move on and start another winning run.

    Apology totally accepted.
I’m drawing a line under any aggro there’s been between me and you.
I need to concentrate my energies 100% on the job in hand – to will Newcastle United back into the premiership.
With the help of the 52,000 who turn up to every home game plus that of a large part of the population of Newcastle, not to mention all those Geordie expats across the world, I reckon we can do it.

James Toon – interesting stats – especially the one when the opposition score first – we always lose – 6 games.
Suggests perhaps- that our tactics/subs were not right after going a goal down/ -bringing on players too late/bringing on wrong players.

So, we can now start having a rational discussion about Rafa’s strengths and weaknesses without being frowned on by some of the Rafa die hards. Good, that’s progress anyway. As I have said, he is doing a great job in many aspects across the club, but this is a seriously expensive championship team and its pretty over-reliant on two players. We’re deep in it if some headcase centre half kicks Gayle in the air. Bobbybee, hope all good mate. I was saying at start of the season that Arma wont make it under Rafa and I stick by that. His set-up doesn’t lend itself to a player like Arma thriving but I wish he was here because we need something. If we get the big Bournemouth striker, where would Arma fit in the 3 behind him? It was predictable that Rafa wouldn’t ditch the 4231 . Sadly it lends itself to a lot of control – the word he keeps repeating – but winning games isn’t always about control. Hopefully a win asap to alleviate the fear.

The problem is we haven’t got a way to play against teams who park the bus and if any team in this league has been watching it’ll be a hell of a lot tougher 2nd half of the season if we don’t change it up a bit,
Most important signing for me is a proper number 10 because that area of the pitch is only getting used about 10% of the time when diame can be arsed and if perez is playing it’s totally void!

People complaining about sideways passing it’s because there isn’t any movement in front of them

I still think some of the less au fait fan base don’t give credit for the brilliantly expedient job that Rafa is doing at NUFC.

At times he must reflect on some of the great players that he has worked with and inwardly shudder at some of the duck eggs he has to work with at the moment.

He must be champing at the bit to get his hands on a top-line squad working in the top echelons , but he gives no sign of his frustration and plays it all with a straight bat.

Lansbury would plug that number 10 hole and add a few goals exactly what we need an in ya face play and not a lot of money
just cannot work out what’s gone wrong with Perez he was the player i thought would improve under Rafa

Some comments on here about the number 10 role.
Perez a waste of time there.
Diame plays when he feels like it.

Surely it would be a lot simpler if we played Murphy and told him every time to just work the channels between the fullback and centre half. He has the pace and strenth to do it. Gayle would be making runs as well.
It could not possibly be worse than Perez.

I don’t think Brighton are going anywhere to be honest. They’ve actually got a very good squad that could cope with a few injuries.

Our problem now is we’ve three teams on our tail and the chances of all three dropping points together are slim. One team may lose but the other two will probably win.
