Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez wanted to bring in Middlesbrough center-back Daniel Ayala in the summer, but he was not available as manager Aitor Karanka blocked the move.
But it hasn’t gone unnoticed that Ayala has lost his starting position in the Middlesbrough team this season and the Sun is now reporting that Rafa could try to get the defender in during January.
Daniel Ayala – Middlesbrough center-back – on the bench
The once capped Spanish U21 International has made only six Premier league appearances for the team so far this season and it was Rafa Benitez who signed him as a 17 year-old for Liverpool back in 2007 after he rejected a professional contract from Sevilla.
It’s a little surprising he has lost his place after he was the star of the team last season during Middlebrough’s promotion drive.
It’s likely that Rafa will bring in another center-back in the summer and he may decide to get Ayala to Newcastle while he’s available – and that’s especially true if his price has dropped form the high £15M put on his head in the summer.
Turkish club Galatasaray are reported to be lining up a bid thought to be in the region £8M for the 6ft 3ins 26 year-old.
If he does manage to bring Ayala in this month he could even send Chancel Mbemba on loan to his former club Anderlecht, since they want him back on loan for the rest of the season according to reports in Belgium.
