Rafa Admits We Have Aready Missed Out On Some Targets

In what was a fairly short press conference this afternoon, Rafa gave updates on the squad and it looks like some of our fringe players will be given an outing at Birmingham City tomorrow in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.

Rafa also addressed some rumors and said that he has no intention  of selling Aleksandar Mitrovic and that the 22 year-old Serbian International would start tomorrow at St. Andrews.

Rafa Benitez meets the press

And interestingly Rafa again said that it was a tough transfer market and that Newcastle had already missed out on some of our transfer targets.

That’s not good news.

This is some of what Rafa said today:

“We maybe need a couple of additions to balance the squad and help the team, but we have done well with what we have”

“It’s not easy.” “Some targets we have lost.” “We have names and we have to wait.”

“There is a lot of speculation about Mitrovic – we are not interested in selling him.”

It’s interesting as to which targets we have missed out on – and whether they include either Tom Cleverley, Ruben Loftus-Cheek or Fabian Delph.

There was news a couple of days ago that Brighton & Hove Albion had beaten Newcastle to the loan signing of Chelsea’s Loftus-Cheek, so we hope that’s not true.

We are also after Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson but we have pulled out of the race for Brentford striker Scott Hogan because he’s way overpriced at £15M.

It also seems difficult for Newcastle to sign one or two players before we play at Brentford a week on Monday – our next league game – but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Yeah its a shame Judge got injured when he did as we probably would have signed him and the combination of Gayle, Richie, Judge and Shelvey would have ripped up this league!

In terms of Sammy I don’t think there is much of a difference between him and Atsu in terms of quality so maybe Rafa cant get a better winger in this window as prices are too high etc so why not give him a go

Be interesting to see what he is like if he does play it really is the last chance saloon for his career

If it’s loftus-cheek then that’s fine. There’s only one player we should be looking at loaning from Chelsea and that’s Charly Musonda.

Wonder what players Rafa is talking about ? Gestede?!

Cant think of too many players that have moved that realistically we would have been in for !?

clubs might have said no to a loan or a sale or the price might have been to high for us

I imagine rafa was meaning missing out on snodgrass and Wilson in this window.. with schneiderlin going to everton I’d like cleverly and/or mccarthy to come to nufc.

Well it looks like Mitrovic is starting tomorrow just hope we send out a team that can properly supply him with chances

Would have loved Schneiderlin at the toon as well! Would take any of those Everton midfielders though as Colback upgrades

I’ve just read a article in the mag which I can’t make sense of.. Ashley has made a loan of £33 million available to the club, 23 December it was registered with companies house (whatever). I don’t understand why the club would need to borrow, thought we wa in profit.. Why do we need a loan Any ideas, sorry for no breaks can’t work it out on my android phone.

Lee – yep all about tightening up and building on what we have. Colback a liability. He’s just too slow so forced into conceding fouls especially in key areas. Hayden far better. Shelvey back soon but it has exposed the squad as needing more quality in depth.

Looking forwards to summer recruitment :

Darlow I like and elliot as 3rd choice fine. Sels is not good and I think Krul’s time is up with us. I the summer I’d look for a top quality keeper for darlow to learn from.

Full backs don’t look convincing that gap needs closing in the summer.

Centre backs – I’d like one commanding centre back with lascelles, clark and Mbemba the competition.

Happy with hayden and shelvey but competition for both needs improving.

Ritchie I really rate, diame can do a job. I’d let go of perez and gouffran. Atsu I’m not yet convinced by.

Murphy can go, Gayle is a mainstay, mitro needs to turn that passion and a Gressingham into effort and goals but keep for now.

So squad at best anita, Dummet.

Say good bye to colback, gouffran, Murphy, hanley, sels, tiote, Krul and all those out on loan.

Optimistic. I think it depends where the profit sits and how much we intend to spend.

“we did make a profit of £31M in the summer transfer market – so the coffers are in good shape.”

‘Getting relegated from the PL to the Championship for the 2016/17 season, will not leave the coffers in good shape at all.

The players wage bill alone would be in somewhere around £50 to £60 million, then there is ‘other’ costs which usually total around £20 million per season, and you also have £5 million wages for Benitez to add in.

I think a few people are going to be surprised at how little the club will have to spend over the next two windows. The funds are just not there, and Ashley will not put his hand in his pocket, that’s not how he works.’

Accountancy not your forté I see.

NUFC received £71 million in June for their season 2015/6 in the PL (even though relegated you stll get the PL dosh at season’s end)

I’m fairly sure part of the agreement with Ashley was to ring-fence that money for player purchases , on condition Rafa got the wages down and binned the deadwood.

The parachute payments for this season should cover the Benitz reduced operating costs

So we have a war chest of around £100 million – although the club will not like it publicised too much for obvious reasons.”

& in other news, ‘Mike Ashley makes £33m loan facility available to Newcastle United ahead of transfer window’.

“Accountancy not your forté I see”, indeed. lol.
