Newcastle Reported After 23 Year-Old Torino Striker

Italian outlet Tuttosport are reporting today that 23 year-old Torino striker Josef Martinez could be ready to join Newcastle.

The outlet is reporting that he is choosing between whether to join Newcastle or German club Hamburg.

The 37 times capped Venezuelan International (9 goals) can play up front as an out-and-out striker or out on the left, but this would seem to go against Rafa Benitez’ drive to bring in British based players.

Josef Martinez – 23 year-old Torino striker

But the injury today to striker Aleksandar Mitrovic could force Rafa to bring in at least one new striker in January, with 24 year-old Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson having been the number one target, but it’s very unlikely that Bournemouth are willing to sell their player in January.

Josef started his career at Caracas in 2010 and he made his debut in August of that year against Estudiantes de Meridahere and he played there for a couple of seasons before moving to Switzerland where he joined Young Boys in January of 2012 on a four year deal.

He made his debut for Young Boys in early February 2012 against Servette FC and stayed in Switzerland for a couple of years and while there spent some time out on loan at Thun, where he scored 8 goals in 18 appearances.

The 5ft 7ins tall striker joined Torino in the summer of 2014 where he has played 74 times with 13 goals.

What do you think?

A draw away to a mid table Championship club, using half a dozen squad players is not a bad result. It gives some fringe players a much needed run, in particular Haidarra, Lazaar, and Murphy, who have plenty to offer.

The replay gives the squaddies another run and chance to press their claims and put pressure on those with the jersey, and of course, Shelvey is back in one match, which pretty much gives us the first 11 back that had been sweeping all before it.

We’ll try to get a bit of quality in, but these top players aren’t really out there for us in the mid season window. We remain in the box seat, despite all the anguished clamour on here to the contrary.

Hopefully Mitro isn’t out too long, then we might actually be forced into the market, rather than simply looking at it for an opportune purchase.

I find it difficult to judge him on last season as it was his first season in English football and it was a big step up from what he was used to. Not only that he had the pressure of being the leading man under Steve mcclaren!

For me he has yet to play really well other than in a few games but I like him being involved because when he does play our midfield plays further forward and more often than not, we look a better attacking team for it.

If Rafa doesn’t rate him then he should sell him and bring in someone he does rate.

I personally wouldn’t mind heardman being given a little run out this month. He’s in decent form and other than today’s match he hit back to back hat tricks. It is a step up but you won’t know unless you throw them in.

I really think Mitro up top, and Gayle as the withdrawn striker would have been our preferred set up if Mitro hadn’t been suspended early doors. Now we have the excellent Shelvey Gayle double act, but that is much harder to replace should one of them be missing.

Personally mate i would flog a fair few before letting Mitro depart us for newer pastures. And like you say he has not really had that run of games unlike others who have been failing for seasons now.
And i would not say its an anguished clamour but more of a worry that it is becoming quite clear the squad does not have strength in depth, More a depth in numbers

Despite only looking good for the first 6 minutes, constantly giving the ball and having little cohesion, we still were unbeaten. Birmingham had only three outfield changes, a different goalie to their best starting 11 and still could not win. The usual control of possession and unable to score is a major worry and seemingly with only 5 attempts, but a good run out for the non-regular members of the squad. They must get another opportunity in the replay although maybe Lazaar can be pencilled in to be the first substitute rather than a starter.

Yeah I wouldn’t want to sell him either but if Rafa is not going to use him much then I think it would be better for him to leave rather than stagnate.

Lol, I remember at the start of the season everyone from fans to pundits were saying we have great depth to our squad. One player gets suspended and our level drops quite alarmingly. I think Rafa knew this too, that’s why Shelvey was never rested or rotated.

The problem is that Gayle relies so heavily on Shelvey, and they play so well together that Rafa also came to rely on them, but it’s not the only way we need to play, and finding a like for like replacement of sufficient quality for either immensely difficult midseason while in the Championship.

Well that must be most at the ground then pal if there reaction is anything to go by come full time.
If your trying to tell me we have strength in depth..Look what’s happened to the loss of Shelvey, No body to replace him. Take Gayle out of the equation, Would you not worry where the goals would come from ??
Its quite clear to all at the games and on here Colback and Hayden do not play well as a unit, Yet we persist because we have not the strength in depth to do anything about it.

We may have a big squad, But not a big squad of quality

agree the squad has the makings of a decent team. however, without shelvey, there is no creativity in the midfield, and there is no clear no10 in the squad (I don’t think diame is best in this position), if rafa cotinues to play gayle up top by himself.

I would either get a decent no10, or give gayle + mitro a chance

Does anyone have two tickets to the game at Brentford on Saturday? Just saw they changed the day of the game so figure there may be some needing to offload tickets now that they can’t make it?

Agree, when Shelvey is not about we need to change the way we play. We don’t exactly have the wingers either to play down the wings. It’s kind of why I’ve kept banging on about giving longstaff a shot. He deserves a game or two after the season he’s having and will offer a goal threat from midfield that we currently lack. He’ll certainly get in the box more than our current midfielders. Plus, Benitez turned down a loan move for him in the summer so he must have considered playing him.

Jimmy at no point was Mitrovic in our preferred set up imo. Gayle was signed for that lone frontman role and Diame was signed for the withdrawn striker role.

Cisse was given that role ahead of him at the back end of the season when he couldn’t trap a bag of cement. He actually got worse game by game while Mitrovic sat on the bench. Perez has been preferred to him 90% of the time this season.

He would probably have even less game time if Murphy was fit all season to be honest.

I don’t think he’ll ever be in a preferred Rafa set up mate.

I don’t see them myself in person, I know a few guys that go often so hear how things go every now and again. I do follow the reports on games though and there are usually YouTube videos/clips that are posted up. There’s a channel I think it’s called Newcastle fans TV or something and they often talk about the kids.

In general though, I’ve always been a believer that young players need to given an opportunity. As a club, we only give youngsters a go when we suffer an injury crisis and throw in a young lad who is either low on confidence, in pressure situations and even out of position. Even if they do well, they are taken straight out never to be seen again.

We currently lack an attacking threat from midfield and there’s a young lad currently banging them in from attacking midfield, Sean longstaff. He’s supposed to have been highly rated by the club for a few years now. A natural attacking midfielder who was played in a deeper position last year.

I personally don’t see the harm in giving him a chance to see how he does. We need something different from midfield, he is on good form and confident. It’s a good chance to play him in my opinion, would offer more than what Perez is currently offering.

Belfast, that isn’t as obvious as you say. Gayle was bought to compete for a role up front, and took the opportunity that was handed to him to lead the line with open arms, effectively marginalising Mitrovich. There’s little to indicate this is how Benitez initially envisioned it. In fact the signing of Murphy would further suggest it wasn’t. The way that Shelvey and Gayle compliment each other is also something that could not have been predicted, but they do, in spades.
