Daryl Murphy put Newcastle 1-0 up after only five minutes in the game at St. Andrews today, but Aleksandar Mitrovic was then stretchered off as he was injured in the play leading up to the goal.
It does not look good for Mitro and the striker was given oxygen on the pitch in what looks like a serious knee injury and it could even be damage to the anterior ligaments.
He picked up the injury in a collision with the home goalkeeper Adam Legzdins and it looked like a sickening injury for the 22 year-old Serbian and puts a shadow over this game which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Aleksandar Mitrovic – badly injured
Gouffran came on for Mitro and Newcastle had more chances in the first half to extend their lead but then the home side came back into the game and Jutkiewicz equalized just before the break.
The result means that the game at Brentford will now take place next Saturday, moved up from the Monday, and the replay will be sometime in that following week.
The team Rafa started had as many as eight changes from the side that was beaten at Blackburn and it very much looked like a second eleven, but we are still in the competition with only our second draw of the season.
It could have been worse with another defeat we suppose.
Mitrovic receiving treatment from the Doctor
The injury to Mitro – which could be a season ending injury it looked so bad – puts pressure on Newcastle to bring in another striker this month.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mitro.
