Rafa Benitez after the dreary draw yesterday said that a replay was not ideal for Newcastle, but we will play it probably a week on Wednesday at St. James’ Park with the game at Brentford being brought forward to Saturday.
It seems the way Newcastle play games these days is to put pressure on early in the game and try to score and we did that yesterday and we made a good start when Daryl Murphy scored after just five minutes.
Daryl Murphy scores yesterday
But then Aleksandar Mitrovic was stretchered off with what looked like serious knee injury, but it could be that Mitro is not too badly injured after all – he has suffered a bad cut on his knee according to the manager.
Here’s hoping he’s going to be OK.
This is what Rafa said after the game with special praise for Daryl Murphy – whom he called a great professional:
“A replay is not ideal, for them or us. We made a lot of changes and changed the system but we had started well and had control before the injury to Mitrovic.”
“Daryl Murphy put in a tremendous effort. I’m really pleased with him and the fact that he scored too.” “He’s a great professional.”
“I always approach every game looking to win.”
“For me, the FA Cup is a massive competition. I won it with Liverpool in 2006 and I will try to do it with this squad too.”
But it was another so-so performance from Newcastle, with Rafa making a massive 8 changes to the side and seemed to give everybody who hadn’t played much this season a game yesterday.
That even included Cheick Tiote who was obviously short of match practice and started off by giving the ball away too many times.
It wasn’t good in the second half, but at least we didn’t lose the game so we still have a chance to get through to the 4th round in 10 days time.
Let’s hope we can do that.
