These Are The Players Who Took Their Chance Yesterday

It was a big chance for players who have rarely played this season to show Rafa Benitez what they can do and a few players in particular put in some very good performances.

The first was Daryl Murphy who Rafa keeps saying is very positive for the squad and is simply a terrific professional.

Daryl showed what he can do for the side yesterday as he scored his first goal for the club and looked a good player who worked his socks off for the cause – no wonder Benitez likes him.

Daryl Murphy after scoring yesterday

Daryl has hardly played all season, but we haven’t heard a squeak of complaint from him and after this performance he will get more starts for Newcastle and hopefully have Dwight Gayle alongside him – the two of them could be a great partnership up front for Newcastle.

Rafa played a 3-5-2 system yesterday with Mitro and Daryl up front and he could maybe duplicate that system by also playing Murphy and Gayle up front – it’s at least worth a try.

Daryl is our Man of the Match with 36% of the vote.

Next in line is Achraf Lazaar who got  a rare start in the team but showed he has pace and skill as a wing-back and he was very prominent for Newcastle, especially in the first half when we were attacking more.

It seems this lad’s best position at Newcastle will be as a winger and with Rolando Aarons injured and Christian Atsu away at the Africa Cup of Nations he should get more playing time in the weeks ahead.

Lazaar got 16% of the vote.

Next in line is a sympathy vote for Mitro, but the really great news this morning is that he needs just  10 days rest and he will be playing again.

DeAndre Yedlin looked perfect as a wing back yesterday and this lad has some speed down the wing and always looks so dangerous – so with Lazaar and Yedlin looking good down the wings why would we need another winger brought in this month?

Maybe what we need a conventional full back who can play on either side?

One of the surprises this season is that Grant Hanley has not played too much football, but the Scottish International is a no nonsense center-back who had a good game and looked comfortable alongside captain Jamaal Lascelles at the back.

He came in for Ciaran Clark who has been great for us this season, so there’s real competition for those two center-back positions.

It would be good to see Grant get more playing time through the rest of the season and he can yet have a future at Newcastle – he had a good game yesterday and looked the part.

Why would Hanley of got more playing time through the season?

He came in got the same chances as Clark and was, in all honesty very poor, Clark wasn’t and has established a solid position
He played well yesterday but can’t see him featuring as regular first teamer

when we signed clark a lot of people on here slagged the signing off,but to be fair to the lad,he’s possibly been the best central defender we’ve had this season…..signing players in this window is going to be tricky, will they sign for us,are they going to be good enough if promoted, its a balancing act,we dont want a load of championship quality players in the squad with long term contracts, if we manage to get promoted, and getting premier league quality players to sign while we are in the championship is going to be tough.

TOONARMY…he would if Rafa went to a 3-5-2 and I think that’s ED’s point and a point I made before yesterday’s game because 3-5-2 at home and against some of the weaker championship sides has to be a decent alternative game-plan

Yedlin and Lazaar are two very decent wing backs in 3-5-2 formation with Hanley, Clark and Lacelles as the middle three.

Ritchie, Shelvey and Hayden would make a very good midfield three with Gayle and one perm 4 for the front two.

Opposing fullbacks wouldn’t dare go past the half way line with Yedlin and Lazaar stretching them…IMO that”s a good formation at home.

So your saying Hanley is a failure as well.
So, add him to Gamez and Sels. That’s now 3 failures from his signings.

Would possibly work but can’t see Rafa ever changing to that tbh
For starters we’ve not enough cover to use 3 CB’s

Either way I’m certain when we signed Rafa as good as said he’d been bought in for cover

5.5 million is a lot to pay for cover…I just think Lacelles and Clark left him in their wake at the beginning of the season and he’s only just now making up the ground.

We must not forget Mbemba either…I think we’ve got enough cover for the 5-3-2 formation

Peter Bosz the head coach of Ajax while trying to be diplomatic is not very impressed with Tim Krul who was expected to be their No1 keeper by now
His progress to full fitness has not been smooth and he is till not 100%.

The young Cameroonian André Onana is shaping up better at the moment.

Onana will not be going to the AfCoN so Tim will be warming the bench for some time to come.

Surely if we get injuries we go back to 4 at the back… but while we’ve got 4 CB’s why not try it to put the opposition on the back foot and get the full backs and Ritchie or whoever in behind the opposition which is something we’ve failed to do recently

A 3-5-2 was played yesterday? If so, where exactly was Haidara playing, if Lazaar was the wing-back? It does not quite add up.

Rafa restructured the squad from top to bottom when he arrived in a very efficient manner with help from Charnley. When we go up he will do the same again to have a squad fit for purpose in the PL.

He may well make a few additions in this window but he knows already the limitations of this squad as do the bloggers on here who understand football.

I agree but it’ll require a serious amount of dosh being spent in the summer to make premiership ready.

How many of the current squad do you think are premiership class and who will be playing next year irrespective of who he buys in the summer.

WWSBRD: Anita played in front of Yedlin, which would mean Yedlin was on the right of a back 3. If Haidara was on the left, that means either Lascelles or Hanley was not playing in defence.

Are the back up players good enough.
Well, he rarely picks them, so does Rafa think they are good enough.
Remember a couple of months back we were being sold the big squad rotation idea.
Rafa has a first eleven and normally sticks with it.
For me it works because of the quality of two players.
    Gayle and Shelvey.
Assisted by Diame when he feels like playing.
Problem is the other teams have worked it out and now have a counter to it.
Wigan and Burton had it worked out but just did not have the ability to finish.

Sparky…….. I think there will be funds made available in the summer but Charnley seems to be a fairly shrewd operator in the transfer market and there will be players being earmarked whose contracts are running down so we won’t be paying crazy prices.

I think the two CB ‘s will be retained as Clarke has looked solid and Lascelles is improving and a good leader. The full back positions are up for grabs between Yedlin, Lazaar , Haidara, Sterry etc. One of them needs to show some consistency but I’m sure we’ll replace Dummett with a more competent left back and maybe keep him as back up.

Shelvey will stay and Hayden is a work in progress but Colback needs upgrading and I think Ritchie will be moved on to pay for an upgrade as he will have done the job he was bought for. I really hope Perez goes as he hasn’t trained on and we obviously need some flair in midfield.

That’s it. After fifty years of going to SJP I’m giving up my ST. Worst manager we’ve ever had and second in the table? SECOND? We should be twenty points clear being the best thing since sliced bread. No, a fan can only take so much and this clearly isn’t good enough for us.
Obviously you detect a touch of sarcasm in my post. I wonder why? How many changes? A team that’s never played together?
We are still in the cup and we are still looking promotion on the face. OK, it wasn’t great, but are you seriously surprised? He put out a team he thought could win and we didn’t lose. We’ll win the replay and March on on two fronts. People need to remember how bad we’ve been these last few seasons and just enjoy the football. If you’re genuinely not happy with Rafa, tough shyte. We, the vast majority are. I would say if you ain’t happy don’t go, but most those unhappy souls don’t anyway, so what’s the point. Halfway through. League cup quarter finals. Still in the FA cup beyond round three’s first game and second in the table. It may not be pretty sometimes but it is effective and getting promoted is simply all that matters. If we don’t, you can complain away and I for one won’t urge a word. But I suspect that in May, all those unhappy now will be saying ‘I knew all along we’ d win the league’as per usual. Bor-ing.
    Away to watch the football.

Why would Rafa pick a back up player ahead of his first team players? They are here to cover injury, tiredness and competition

As for rotation what did u expect? The entire team changing every game? It’s been pretty consistent rotation over the season for most spots

As for being reliant on Gayle and Shelvey of course we are

Seriously though, I get what you mean. He’s a good defender but lascelles and Clark have been the better partnership this year. I think when he’s played he’s looked a little shaky which I would put down to underestimating this league if I’m honest.

JP.”………… Mbemba’s off to Afcon. He’s prone to the odd defensive error although he has pace and can play with the ball at his feet. Rafa is basing this promotion drive on a solid basic defence so we’ll have to wait and see if he figure in the plans long term.

However this response from Tsunki ——–

Seems a bit over the top even making allowances for consumption of copious amounts of malt whisky.”
