Tim Krul And Newcastle Face A Difficult Situation With Ajax

Ajax’ 20 year-old  goalkeeper Andre Onana has played 20 times for the first team since Jasper Cillessen signed for Barcelona in August and the Dutchman is now second choice to German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen at the Spanish powerhouse.

Ajax manager Peter Bosz has been talking about Tim Krul in the Telegraaf today and the Newcastle goalkeeper has still not played for the first team at Ajax with his loan spell for the season now half way through.

Tim was ostensibly signed to replace fellow Dutch International  Jasper Cillessen  in August but it hasn’t turned out that way.

Tim Krul – still to make his debut for Ajax

Andre Onana came through the youth system at Barcelona before moving to Ajax in 2015 and he has been playing regularly for the team so far this season.

This is what Peter Bosz has told the Telegraaf:

“The situation with Onana was obviously intended to bridge the short period between the departure of Jasper Cillessen and Tim being fit.”

“But Tim was not fit and Andre has done well and is reliable. All of that comes into consideration for the choice for the rest of the season.”

“On the one hand it’s a luxury for us, but naturally for Tim it’s a nasty situation.”

“Tim is a great guy to work with, but he’s an optimist,” “When he came to us, we had the idea that he would work with us in full within two weeks.”

“I like his enthusiasm, but he wanted to participate with the first team before he had joined any group training.”

“We have to be realistic and that would have been dangerous.”  “What he wanted to do, we just couldn’t do.”

But that was all back in August and it’s now January and Tim’s still not playing.

The Ajax manager has praised the 20 year-old Onana a number of times this season and it may be he prefers him to Tim.

But that’s not what Tim or Newcastle signed up for when they sent Tim out on loan.

The idea was to allow Tim to rehabilitate himself by playing a full season in goal and since he’s 100% fit now and still not playing – that’s a problem.

Tim is set to return to Newcastle in the summer when Rafa will make a decision on which senior goalkeeper to let go between Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot, Matz Sels and Tim Krul.

It’s not going to be good if Tim doesn’t play for Ajax this season.

When Krul returns we’ll have Krul, Elliott, Darlow, Sels and Woodman

Can’t see how we can keep hold of 3 of those 4 senior GK’s – all 4 are too good to be 3rd choice

IMO we should keep 2 of those senior GK’s along with Woodman as 3rd choice.

I cant imagine any other scenario that doesnt have selz as the top gun. Selling price should determine who we keep after that. Its really irrelevant because barring an injury, a 2nd GK is really needed.

We get the same crap every window. If a player is available, we get connected to them. Agents desperate to move players on, regardless of how happy they are at a club, so they get their grubby paws full of money. They’re just glorified pimps, getting money on the back of someone else’s work.
I never have rated Cleverley and would be disappointed if we got him. The Fulham lad’s a canny player, but twenty million canny? If we’re willing to flash that amount of money on a Championship player make Brighton an offer they can’t refuse for Knockeart. He could definitely step up and did so for Leicester.
I can’t see Rafa wasting money, I think if he can’t get who he wants he’ll make do. I’m sure though, he’s got something lined up along the way and probably nobody we’ve been connected with yet. It’s just a case of trusting him to do the right thing and we all want the same thing after all. For once we’ve got money to spend and a manager who knows what he’s doing – a novel experience for Newcastle. ? Small mercies, but at least Brighton aren’t getting Loftus-cheek, which could have been a disaster. I think I would’ve kept Roberts whilst Atsu is in Africa, but I don’t get to choose. I trust Rafa to do whatever needs to be done. post, missed the bus. Typical.

I’d rather sign no one than waste money on championship dross like Cairney or awful players like Cleverly as we have enough quality in the squad to go up.

The squad we have is by far the best our of any other team in the league, if Rafa can’t get automatic promotion with this lot then he has a lot to answer for.

Save what’s in the budget get 1 or 2 on loan and spend big in the summer as we should go up, we’ve made a piss poor effort recently which I blame the same old tactics for, time to take off the handbrake and go on a long winning run

On Krul, they’ll play their own keeper given the choice because he’ll be there next season, Krul won’t. As long as he keeps playing well he’ll keep his place. It makes sense.
I think people have short memories re Krul at times. Without him we would’ve been relegated a while back, without Rafa to rescue the situation.
Yes, his last couple of seasons weren’t great, but look at who he had in front of him? I don’t think any of our current keepers would have done any better behind that defence.
He could have left for better sides, but wasn’t even interested. He considers himself a Geordie now and proud of it. Writing him off after many great seasons against one bad one is a bit short sighted imo. I’d like to see him come back and fight for his place, because I still think he’s better than what we currently have. His great days were in the PL and Europe, not the Championship and I for one don’t want to write him off too early. You can immediately write off Selz as competition, because he can’t handle the Championship, let alone the PL. All about opinions of course, but in mine, he’s still our number one.

Will he make the step up to the prem? Or is he a stop gap; I’d say he’s the latter so don’t see why we’d spend 20m on player that will be redundant in 5 months time

I’d go for will Hughes looks like he’s over his injury and is a player who is ready to step up imo, huge experience for his age and has all the attributes to be a top player,
Don’t know what his contract situation is but hopefully he’s not got too long left so we could get him at a decent fee

He’s obviously not worth 20 million but he’s way better than everyone we have apart from Shelvey.

He will play premier league eventually imo I see far worse playing premier league week in week out.

Not seen much of Hughes but defo need a creative midfielder, not sure if he is a creative player, a back up for shelvey or alternative option is required!! Would have liked Loftus Cheek but that isn’t going to happen

Forresteri and knockaert I’m also keen on but can’t them happening in this window so happy to carry on as we are…..with a tactical change at home going with 2 up front

I don’t think we need anyone.
We just need to get back to what we were and indeed are – the best team in this division.
A couple of wins and the nerves will settle. Half the season gone on we are on par for 100 points. In a good place really.
Will Hughes would be a great buy but might be best in summer if we up and they aren’t. Can’t imagine they would sell now at anything other than silly money.

Didn’t Cairney play in the prem a while back? I’m sure he did although young at the time but wasn’t deemed good enough by Bruce and sold onto Blackburn, he’s kicked on a wee bit since then…..still not good enough for the prem, neither is our midfield, jury is out on Shelvey at that level as well after last seasons antics.

Is Cairney an improvement on what we currently have…..yes but not by much!!

He’s turning 26 soon so needs to get a move on if he’s going to make the step up, the fact there’s next to zero interest from the PL at present indicates he’s been scouted and not good enough!!

depends if mcclaren would want to return a phone call of course and Derby need some cash

Manx don’t think they need the money now they have there own rich owner. Would possibly be forced by the player in the Summer as a step up if they don’t get up . Would be a great signing and one to excite the fans. Future England player I think if he moves to the right club

Going back a few threads I was a little shocked and surprised by Lascelles comments regarding the focus on a different formation.

I would have thought tactics and formations were a normal part of everyday training never mind only a few days before a game.

How can a team adapt to changes in a match if they aren’t pre-practiced.

Lascelles said they haven’t practiced that formation/tactic this season, not they haven’t practiced anything else at all this season

Given Murphy’s limited availability and lack of fitness until recently it’s hardly a surprise they haven’t trained much to play with 2 target men
