Matz Sels cost Newcastle £5M from Gent in the summer as Rafa Benitez brought in another goalkeeper with both Tim Krul and Rob Elliot recovering from ACL knee injuries.
Matz started the season as first choice, but had a few dodgy moments and after the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa he was replaced by Karl Darlow who has been playing well for us.
Matz is the number two goalkeeper at the moment although Rob Elliot is on his way back and could soon be the backup to Karl in the Newcastle goal.
Rafa Benitez with Matz Sels
Matz played on Saturday in the 1-1 draw at Birmingham City and is likely to be between the sticks in the replay a week today at St. James Park.
It’s not often that Matz has been interviewed since he arrived at Newcastle but he’s given an interview today to the local press.
This is some of what he said as reported in the Chronicle:
“I’m happy if I can play – now there is a return and we have to beat them.”
“I try to work hard in training and show myself and make it difficult for Benitez.” “That’s what I try to do.”
“It’s football. Karl’s doing well at the moment.” “As a goalkeeper, there’s only one position, so it’s normal.”
“I have to be patient and see what the future brings.”
“The FA Cup is important, of course – you want to win every game as a football player,”
“The FA Cup is really important. We will give everything to go through.”
“Benitez changed some players, but that is normal. The focus is on the Championship.”
“It’s also good to let some players rest and give some other players a chance to show themselves.”
“We started the game at St Andrew’s with another formation. We had to adapt a little bit and trained all week on that.”
“I think the first 20 minutes were good. We were leading 1-0.
“After that, they came at us, but I don’t think they had really big chances. Defensively, we were good.”
“But it’s normal that you’re disappointed if you don’t win.”
“Now we have a replay and have to beat them at home at St James’ Park. It’s an advantage to us.”
That’s a good interview with Matz and he comes across as a good professional.
Newcastle were drawn at Oxford United in the 4th round of the FA Cup on MOnday night if we can beat Birmingham City in the replay.
That’s a big incentive to win the replay but Rafa will again rotate his players after Saturday’s important Championship game at Brentford.
