We thought that when Fulham asked £20M for their central midfielder Tom Cairney that would be it, but the local papers today are saying Rafa Benitez is keen to sign the creative playmaker and that the fee is £8M – and that’s a lot less than £20M.
Times reporter George Caulkin had tweeted yesterday that Newcastle were quoted £20M for the player earlier this month and that was the end of that – but that may not be the case.
Tom Cairney – 25 year-old Fulham midfielder
This is what George tweeted yesterday:
Told that Newcastle enquired about Fulham’s Tom Cairney before the window opened and were quoted £20m – & that was the end of that. #NUFC
— George Caulkin (@CaulkinTheTimes) January 10, 2017
But both the Chronicle and Northern Echo are reporting today that Fulham want £8M for a player who cost them just £4M when he signed on from Blackburn in the summer of 2015.
So Fulham would get the chance to double their money on their player in less than two years and maybe Newcastle could go even go higher if Rafa is really keen on the player.
Certainly Newcastle must get in a creative playmaker to augment what Jonjo Shelvey offers us, with nobody in the squad able to fill in for him during his suspension.
And with Cheick Tiote possibly leaving Newcastle for Spain this month, after trying to leave the club for at least the last two years, that will open up a central midfielder slot in the Newcastle squad.
Both Sporting Gijon and Leganes are interested in signing Cheick this month before his contract at Newcastle runs out at the end of June.
Cairney has a Scottish father and English mother and he was born in Nottingham and has been in really good form for Fulham this season.
Certainly Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic doesn’t want to lose him and he said this about his player earlier this month:
“Tom Cairney is so important to us.” “He makes us tick and he shows he can do damage to teams.”
“I’m going to guarantee he’s going to stay with us.”
Tom has scored 5 goals in 25 appearances for Fulham this season and they are currently 10th in the Championship table on 36 points.
For even £10M it would seem that Tom would be a good signing for us, especially when you think he can help us get promoted and we’ll be back in the big money of the Premier League.
What do you think?

Comment #3On the subject of Jib I’m pretty sure he was on yesterday so he’s only been ‘AWOL’ for one day – could well have been dragged to the shops by his missus or he travels to Spain quite often – I’m sure he’ll turn up soon.

No question that he has ability and as you say Rafa has possibly decided to use some of what he already has.
On a slightly different note, it Looks like the Toon has had a bit of a blasting, looking at the news. Hope it’s calmed down by Saturday although snow might be heading that way.

Comment #9Bill, that’s the last three buses on the trot I missed. Last comment three times running. That’s happened more times than I can even remember. Not going to bother with the Repost, it’s overleaf. Just as well I’m not paranoid, because there’s a guy fixing something up the road and he keeps saying Bobbybee must die, over and over. (it is in morse code like, but he ain’t fooling me) 🙂

Comment #12If that price for Cairney is right, then he might be worth a punt, whereas twenty mil was ridiculous and never going to happen. Rafa often goes for players other managers miss, because he has a specific role in mind for them. This only shows how professional he is I suppose.
As said earlier, I hope Sammy gets a final chance to show his worth. He’s brought him back because he obviously couldn’t get the winger he was after and must see Sammy as a decent alternative. If he could only be more consistent he really could be a player. Maybe his time at Bolton has given him the regular games he needed to get it together. So much potential spoiled by being brilliant one game and going missing the next. One thing for certain, if he plays to his best then he can definitely do a job for us in the Championship. Going past players like a ghost is something he has always had the ability to do. I did wonder why Rafa let Roberts go out on loan when we needed a winger, but maybe he’s been impressed enough by Sammy to take a gamble on him. When he’s good, he is an exciting player to watch.

Comment #14It seems Rafa is looking for Championdhip players that he thinks will make the step up next season. It’s always a bit of a gamble but probably makes more sense than paying 22m for the likes of Schneiderlin who hasn’t played for ages.
I don’t like the idea of signing Everton rejects Cleverley and McCarthy.
They have proved to be not good enough in the PL.

Comment #16WWSBRD, I certainly hope you’re right mate. I think both offer plenty to the blog, although I’m not sure too many get Jib’s sense of humour at times. Sometimes I chuckle away whilst others slate him. Sometimes though others think I’m having a dig when I’m just having a laugh, so it’s horses for courses. He can take it as well as give it, but I can see why sometimes people think he goes too far. A lot like to give it though, but hate it when they say something others laugh at and instead of taking it as it was meant, they take it personally. I’ve had some nasties thrown at me, but would never dream of making a complaint – I just give it straight back. 🙂 Everybody’s different though and I accept that. I would miss both though, no doubt about it. I might be in the minority there but that’s never bothered me in the past. 🙂

Comment #17Belfast, even ten would be a decent price imo. He certainly helps make Fulham tick, which is why I can’t see them wanting to sell him. I don’t think they need the money sadly, but I suppose his head might be turned by the thought of playing under Rafa in front of 52k crowds? Other clubs might say the crowd doesn’t matter, but I beg to differ on that. A full SJP is a sight to behold.

Comment #19Ed should publish a list of the folk he bans with a short description of the “offence” – bit like a list at the Magistrates Court. Would stop any speculation.
I think Jib Jibberish will probably just be busy and cannot afford the time to be on the blog and left face it nothing much is happening on the football front that has not already been discussed.
I think he’s probably preparing his lectures and marking his students exam papers -after all he is a lecturer in Modern European History and also in Psychology -as he reported on here some time ago.

Comment #22WWSBRD, exactly mate. Like I say, that’s what makes the blog what it is. Be a strange world if everybody got on. A lot nicer, but definitely strange. Let’s face it mate, we’re a world ruled by psychopaths, yet we keep voting them in. (Not that any decent choice is ever on offer, but they are all nut jobs). I find Jib more funny than offensive and people bite far too easily, which naturally urges him on. Just don’t take him seriously is my advice. In fact, don’t take anybody seriously, you have no idea who you’re talking to really. I might, even be a Martian…
No, like ye say, each to their own, but I would definitely never fall out with anybody because of who they like or dislike. Or take sides even when you know you’re on the wrong side. 🙂 Much better to be as close to yourself as ye can be and let live and let die. Football’s the only thing that really matters on here and the one thing we can all agree on – we all want promotion. There ye go, how can anyone argue with that? 🙂 Oh no, here comes TOF to prove me wrong ha ha ha!

Have to agree with you and for me I just read what is of interest for me and what not I just skip. I still play the odd competitive computer game online in my late 30´s with my mates of similar age and these days the things that is said in chat or over the mic by kids that are no older than 14 is far more hair raising, than what has been said one here. Maybe that why I don’t get to bothered by insult thrown around of a lesser nature, but we all have our own opinions.

Comment #37Bobbybee – I didn’t take the person you’re talking about (I’m not saying it’s name) seriously until he said a word that has absolutely no place on a football blog. I was going to report him to Ed but figured it would be a waste of my time. If he had of apologised right away I would have given him the benefit of the doubt, but he had to be asked to say sorry, and even after that he blamed others for forcing him into using the word. He then said he thought it was weird that I’d ‘suddenly developed a sibling with Downs’ and that I was probably making it up to get him into more trouble. And people are seriously missing this person? The mind boggles…

Comment #38Couple of year back a right scumbag got banned by Ed – racist, homophobic -slagged off Newcastle’s Irish folk – thug as well – threatening to beat folk up. Really nasty bit of work.
Erm he was erm -aye Jeff from Benwell – re -appeared within days as that nice poster called Jib/Jane. He’s only slightly racist, slightly homophobic, slightly xenophobic and only occasionally uses derogatory language in respect of the disabled.
Much better bloke to get on with – clearly learnt his lessons – good bloke to have on the blog.

My mother used to have a little shop in Byker in the mid-fifties, early sixties and she was well aware of and supportivd of the closeness within those working class communities. She didn’t resort to naming and shaming but sadly, those communities did have their share of criminals and ne’erdowells. She was stung and suffered a few burglaries to the shop.
Happy days eh

Comment #40Personally I’ve been really enjoying the focus being on football these past few days and look forward to reading more. I know people are saying the transfer window has been boring so far, but it nearly always gets a bit more exciting towards the end. I can’t wait to see who Rafa is able to get into a Toon shirt for the second half of the season. The squad needs another little shake up and the absence of one or two players because of suspension or AFCON has given Rafa a better idea of where we need to get some cover.
