Aston Villa To Challenge Newcastle For Midfielder

The Mirror is reporting that Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce has been given £25M to spend by the Aston Villa owner Tony Xia in January and one of his targets is Tom Cairney of Fulham, who Newcastle are also interested in signing.

It seems that Villa are close to tying up a deal for Nottingham Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury and it’s not known if they get that deal competed – whether they would still want Cairney.

Tom Cairney – Fulham playmaker

Cairney is said to be rated at around £10M by Fulham and when Bruce was the Hull City manager from 2012-2016 Tom was there for the first two years, so he will know the player well.

Villa made a poor start in the Championship, but under Steve Bruce they are doing a lot better, although they are still in 12th place and 17 points behind Newcastle who are currently second top to Brighton with 52 points.

It therefore seems there will some additional competition if Rafa Benitez is really keen on bringing in Cairney – the 25 year-old playmaker – who has been in great form for Fulham this season.

Tom has played 67 times for Fulham with 13 goals since signing on for them in the summer of 2015 from Blackburn Rovers for £4M.

Do you think it is worth looking abroad if we cannot sign our targets?

just going back to atsu, but has’nt he already played for 2 clubs this season, isnt there a rule about 3 clubs in one season or something…seems a very strange story..come out of left field as the saying goes…..cairney is good player but 20m is a big chunk of change out of the summer kitty if he’s not up to the step up.

If villa want to blow 20 mil on him then good luck to them. I’m sure Rafa won’t lose any sleep over it. We’ll probs sign a player that hasn’t been mentioned.

Don’t know too much about him tbh so not sure how much of a blow not getting him would be?

On Atsu thought he couldn’t be recalled because we have a future fee agreement in place…am going to say Turkish BS reporting

He never played for Chelsea this season.
I think if Chelsea really wanted to cancel the deal and sell him to someone else they probably could.

Sammy Ameobi will be like a new signing anyway. Especially when he’s tearing RBs apart on that left wing

I’d really like to see us sign players who will be ready for the premier league. Delph, mccarthy, snodgrass and Wilson for that mould. All 4 would make a huge difference. Yes it’s a very tall order but we could play 433 or 451 and really dominate this league. We’d only need to sort the defence out in the summer and they’d be use to playing together before we kick a ball next season as well. That’s the sort of thing I’d hope our leadership team are thinking. I still have my doubts Ashley will invest enough to give us a fighting chance of staying up IF we go up. Without strengthening I’d be concerned that may not happen. If we sit on our hands then nothing has changed in my opinion, same old gamble from the regime. This is as pivotal a moment as not investing before our champions league qualifier all those years ago. I hope the delay is details not hitting brick walls or a lack of investment.

    Belfast
That is a agreed future fee mate, the options there because in the contract we have a fee set stating we can buy him for that price anytime during the year loan…I don’t see how Chelsea can cancel that without our agreement

Sounds the same as Shelvey he seems pretty well liked these days. And tbf looking at goals and assists for him when that’s not what he brings to the team is pretty harsh he’s a DM afterall

He’s better than what we have

Well. well well, 12 days in and still no sign of movement on the transfer front for us. I doubt the club will be held to ransom, and if other clubs are willing to pay more then so be it.

We are kinda desperate for some creativity in midfield, and an actual No 10. Anyway still plenty of time before the window shuts, and I don’t see any panic buying on the horizon.

Maybe something will happen next week; eh!

Yes you’re probably right, but he’s not what’s needed in this window. We’re looking a creative midfielder so buying James McCarthy would be a waste of time. I’d be pretty content with Hayden or Colback as the defensive midfielder for the rest of this season to be honest.

I would have went for both Cairney and Lansbury and a winger. Looks to me like we’re depending on loans from premier league clubs.

T’was a year ago to the day that Shelvey signed on with ourselves. It wouldn’t appear the club is in any rush to get players signed in this window, then again, we got Shelvey for about half of his real value according to the ‘CIES’, so there are not many of those deals knocking around at the moment.

George Thorne would be my pick for the defensive role alongside Shelvey. He’s been out injured so perhaps not for January but in the summer I would like to see us go for him if he’s gets back to same level as before.

As far as Colback goes, he’s ideal when he plays alongside Shelvey. In fact, imo nobody does it better. He does the hard work that goes unnoticed which frees Jon Jo to create. It is beyond ludicrous to even compare him to Shelvey because they play different roles. Hayden is more like Shelvey than Colback, just not as good. He may be in the future, just not yet. Colback’s not rubbish when played alongside Shelvey. Yes, he makes mistakes – we all do – but with our current squad there’s nobody I would rather have beside Shelvey. If you ask Shelvey, I think he might say the same thing. Just an opinion of course, but they work really well together, but sadly Colback looks lost on his own.
