Spanish club Sporting Gijon seem close to agreeing a deal for Cheick Tiote so the central midfielder can finally leave Newcastle after two years of trying.
The only hold-up appears to be the wages Cheick is asking for, but that seems like it can be ironed out.
Cheick Tiote – close to leaving Newcastle – again
In fact Sky Sports Spanish reporter Guillem Balague, who knows Rafa well, has tweeted this morning that it seems like it will be going through.
Tiote (Newcastle) could be soon moving to Sporting Gijon if nothing goes wrong. Last details to be ironed out…

The 30-year-old may even be allowed to leave Newcastle on a free transfer so the club can get his wages off the wage bill since he doesn’t have a future at the club under manager Rafa Benitez.
Rafa was clear at the start of the window that he didn’t want to lose any players except for Cheick:
“We don’t want to sell anyone if it’s not necessary,” said Benitez. “The only one we are open to selling is Cheick.”
Cheick joined us from FC Twente in the summer of 2010 for £3.5M after we had been promoted back to the Premier League and he was very good for the first couple of years but then never quite back to that form.
The 52 times capped Ivory Coast international can still do a job for Sporting in the Spanish League.
