News today that Tom Cleverley has chosen to join Watford on loan for the rest of the season with an option to buy – based on a successful medical today – and that means Newcastle have lost out on another transfer target.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte recently decided that he wants to keep Ruben Loftus-Cheek at the club, after the lad must have been impressive in training and so another of our January targets bit the dust – so to speak.
Newcastle still have a loan bid in for Fabian Delph of Manchester City, but you wonder whether these players are willing to take the step down to the Championship – if only for half a season.
Fabian Delph – available on loan
Certainly Tom Cleverly didn’t.
Fabian would be a decent acquisition for us – if we can get him in.
The player we like is Fulham central midfielder Tom Cairney but there are conflicting reports about both the fee and whether we are still interested in the player.
Tom Cairney – still a Newcastle target?
The fee Fulham want for him is anywhere from £8M to £20M with the lower figure being the most likely after they signed him from Blackburn Rovers eighteen months ago for just £4M.
At this stage he would be our preferred target and Newcastle have also shown interest in 26 year-old Algerian International Ryad Boudebouz, although it seems he has been offered to Newcastle by his French club Bordeaux.
It doesn’t look like Newcastle are too interested in Boudebouz, from what we can tell.
Anderlecht playmaker Youri Tielemans
Of course we were also linked over the last few months with outstanding young 19 year-old Anderlecht playmaker Youri Tielemans and the Belgium International looks to become a terrific player in the future.
But we doubt he would join a Championship club at this stage – although he may be a target of Newcastle’s in the summer if we can make it back to the Premier League.
We may also still be interested in Brentford playmaker Alan Judge, but Alan will not be fit to play until the end of this month and he would be a risk.
His contract at Brentford runs out at the end of June and again he could become a target this summer if we get promoted.
The two players we must bring in this month are a playmaker and another striker, otherwise our promotion bid could be hit.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #2On Tiote going, should he not get some sort of thanks or send off after spending the best part of his career with us? It was the same when Coloccini and Jonas left. Everybody glad to see the back of them due to current form is understandable but it shouldn’t be how their time is remembered.

Comment #3Does anybody think we will sign anybody in this window looks like the loan deals are not go to happen as they do not want to drop down for half a season in the championship twelve days in this window and not even close to signing one player this is not what we expected ..

Comment #4AC….No one wishes for that more than me 🙂
I swear there’s some subliminal messaging at play on here, that keeps bringing me back.
I suppose NUFC is one powerful drug.
You have lost me with “candle fairy” however.

Comment #7Obertan…You include Jonas in that? Imo the fans showed exactly how much Jonas’ meant to us. It was the club themselves who let that man down.
As for Colo, he was our club captain and turned in to perhaps the greatest shirker at the club. I was a fan, but he let us down imo.
Who knows what happened to Tiote. He doesn’t appear to care, so this seems to be fitting.
I don’t wish any of them badly and Tiote can have my thanks, but a send off?

Comment #9I see Momo Sissoko is brassing himself around for another crack in the prem? Not sure he is up to that any more, but he might be good enough for 5 months in the champo? Hard to believe he is still only 31.

Comment #10I would like to see us move for a playmaker (#10) and a winger, long term replacement for Gouffy. Or better yet two new 10s as I don’t think playing either Diame or Perez there has worked out. Also not sure we need another striker, especially if Rafa persists with his standard 4-2-3-1 formation. Mitro has played well when he has been given an opportunity (except perhaps Blackburn at home match) and his injury will not keep him out for more than a couple more weeks. Also have Murphy and Perez as 3rd and 4th options. So unless we sell a striker first not sure we need another. If we sell Perez first then that would be fine though!

I know it makes absolutely no sense to say I miss Jib. I guess what I mean is everyone needs a nemesis.
By god Jib could give it and be thoroughly objectionable and super obnoxious on many levels, ie he is / was a racist, sexist, homophobe and the parallels with Trump don’t end there, but he could also take it and I think I miss the verbal sabre rattling.

Comment #17Regarding comments a few articles back about Saivet, he is at AFCON with Senegal. So whether he might be recalled from loan or extended at St. Etienne, he won’t be available to play for anyone until Senegal finishes their tournament run.

Rotonda…If you truly believe that you are welcome to that opinion. Suffice to say I think you’ve lost the plot completely. This blog does need differing opinions and healthy debate, I cannot fathom how all of a sudden you think Jib brings that.

Comment #22I was so disappointed with the newsletter about Cleverley, thankfully though Watford saved us. Close call. Someone mentioned he’d be an upgrade in Colback. Sure – like cod liver oil is an imorovement in your cornfkakes over horse urine.

For the reasons mentioned. I took more abuse than most from Jib on here, but like to think I gave as good as I got. Plus he occasionally had some interesting snippets.

No worries, I could stand to lose a few pounds!

Bit ironic all the topics centre-ing around Watford and Cleverley then Graham Taylor dies. Must admit I couldn’t stand his functional, no flair hoofball and how he destroyed SBR’s England team, but wouldn’t wish that on him.

Comment #38Jib’s good value unlike the sanctimonious puerile hypocrites who neither advise, entertain or inform. At the front of the baying pack is the mean spirited self appointed “father of the blog” Mr Tuff, who has driven so many quality football bloggers away through sheer boredom of hearing his endless preaching ” don’t do what I do but do what I say”.
It is advisable that a person know at least three things:
Where they are, where they are going and what they had best do under the circumstances.
As I’ve said before I am with Belfast on Tom Cairney he would be an upgrade on Isaac Hayden and could play with Shelvey, Hayden and Colback. Certainly also able to perform at the highest level – I’ve watched him against us and a few other times this season and he’s been outstanding.

Comment #39This has gone on way to long, there are players out there so why are they all signing for other clubs. It does look like Newcastle January transfer policy for the last god knows how many seasons. We wait and wait and miss out again and again over a million here or there. If the club really wants to get back in the premiership they need to get this figured out asap. Play maker, striker and a versatile winger that can switch sides if need be. Every day I get on Sky and this blog and hope to see something, but like January for most years its the same old, same old. Sorry fans we just missed out on this player.
