Newcastle fans took to Twitter tonight to celebrate the 2-1 hard-fought win at Brentford – who made us fight all the way.
But we also picked up three injuries to Dwight Gayl (hamstring), Isaac Hayden (groin) and Vurnon Anita and the Dutchman’s looked the worst of the three injuries as he was stretchered off the field with an ankle injury.
There’s also talk of maybe Andros Townsend returning to Newcastle in a surprise move by Rafa Benitez – that’s according to a report in the Mail tonight.
Dwight Gayle – after scoring his 20th goal this afternoon
We desperately need a striker this window #nufc gayle is genuinely quality but without him we may struggle

As much as I liked Townsend I'd never have him back – jumped ship at earliest opportunity after we gave him platform to play #snake #nufc

Vital three points today for #NUFC who were pushed all the way by Brentford. Could be the turning point.

Been critical of Perez all season but stepped up today with 2 assists… That cross for Murphy was superb ?? #NUFC

I'd have Townsend back In a heartbeat. Dunno why anyone wouldn't. He seemed the only one who genuinely tried back end of last season #nufc

Anyone who says no to signing back Andros Townsend is an idiot he did his best when he played and left in a respectful way #NUFC

Comment #1Townsend’s agent wisely placed a relegation clause into his contract.
He chose to enforce it.
He’s from London and while at Spurs been on 9 six month loans all over the place.
Yeovil Town
Leyton Orient
MK Dons
Ipswich Town
Watford
Millwall
Leeds Utd
Birmingham
QPR
As far as he was concerned it was just another six month spell at yet another club.
The fact we actually made a £1million profit on the deal was our good luck.
Loyalty schmoyalty – nobody has ever shown him any – least of all Spurs who he was with from the age of nine.

Comment #2Perez looked ok. Really want him to make the most of this little run he’s gonna get. It was a lovely ball for Murph, who I’m delighted to see in the frame.

Comment #4Yet again the match could have gone either way, why frigging try and defend 1-0 lead, boring tactics yet again.

Comment #5Welsh, you gotta be prepared to grind away in this league. Discipline and perseverance aren’t pretty, but are essential if we want to go up. We haven’t had Shelvey, but all in all without him we’ve come through alright, and now he’s back.

Comment #6At least we had a lead to defend – unlike the Swans .

Comment #8As is often the case a physical centre forward like Murphy pulls two defenders with him as he’s seen as a threat. That leaves more space for the wide men to get crosses in and today it worked. I feel it might work very well at SJP so Murphy needs to play.
Spine of a team is often talked about
Darlow -Lascalles – Shelvey – Murphy
Looks good to me
But does Rafa ?

Comment #9Jib, well said pal. At Newcastle it looked like he would play for England again, but unlikely in the Championship. I don’t know too many players who would gamble that chance away. He tried his heart out for us, nobody can deny him that. As Hibbett says, it may well be paper garbage again – like every other one so far, but with Rafa, Ashley and Charnley all at the game, they might well have been looking at somebody in London. Might be as simple as checking up on Judge’s fitness, who we know we are interested in.
We could work round the wages thing by promising him a bonus and wage rise if we get promoted, but I think getting back to regular football with a manager he likes and the majority of fans who like him would be a big incentive for him. (the others would quickly come round as well if he plays anything like he did last season). Probably just talk, but this is at least one that sounds plausible, unlike some others which have been a bit daft.
Anyway, that’s my last word on it. Right price, no Brainer. If he’s greedy, can’t be done sadly. It’s all in the big man’s hands. Hypnosis might work. 🙂

Comment #10We did not try and defend a 1-0 lead we were all over them, we got worse they got momentum. We won with the excellent 3M signing Daryll Murphy who has sat on the sidelines all season, uncomplaining waiting for a chance.

Comment #14Got to say, from the highlights and commentary – not the best I know – but Perez appeared to have a decent game. That cross for Murphy was Sublime and deserved the finish it got. I have been a massive critic this season but always like to give credit where it’s due and for that cross alone he deserves it in spades. Jail, how did he look in real life mate? You’re opinion has far greater weight having been there.

Why was it unlikely he would not play for England in the Championship, Shelvey may have well earned himself a recall, his leaving wouldn’t have bothered me so much if he hadn’t of publicly declared how much he owes us, how was he ever planning on repaying us, scoring a hatrick against the mackems?

Comment #18there’s a question for you all, when it comes picking 1st team, tactics, formation, bringing on subs, what’s Pardew, Mcclaren, or Carver for example didn’t do which Benitez is doing right now, don’t jump down my throat, just want people’s opinions on the difference.

Comment #20I think that’s the only reason he left. Someone in the England set up has been in his ear telling him he needs to be playing premier league football week in week out to remain in the England reckoning and he did get in the first couple of squads when he moved to be fair.

Perez was excellent first half, forgot he was playing in the second, it seemed like Colback done most of the work before Perez set up Murphy. Their Ginger who was an almost replica of Colback seemed to up his game in the ginger off.

Comment #23It’s only this season really that I’ve had to listen to Radio Newcastle, now away games are just too much for me to manage. Can I ask, has Ando always been a miserable sod and the commentary generally boring? Sounds like he could make the Norwich win sound pretty average. There’s just so little life when you compare it to five live or talksport commentaries.
