Eight Changes For Magpies At Brentford

Newcastle have just announced the team to face Brentford this afternoon and try to get our very first win of 2017.

Newcastle: Darlow, Yedlin, Lascelles (c), Clark, Dummett, Colback, Hayden, Ritchie, Gouffran, Perez, Gayle.
Subs: Sels, Hanley, Anita, Sterry, Ameobi, Murphy, Lazaar

It’s interesting that Rafa has both Sammy Ameobi and Jamie Sterry on the bench today.

Only Yedlin, Lascelles and Colback started the game last week at Birmingham City and it looks like we are back to 4-2-3-1.

That’s the team we had but we had Anita at right back – close.

This is what Rafa has said about the game today:

“We know Brentford are a good team who play good football, especially at home.”

“The Reading defeat proves this competition is difficult. Relegated teams rarely go up but we’re doing well and must stay focused”

“The competition in the division is so difficult – anything can happen.” “We have to fight until the last month.”

“We have to stay calm, concentrate and work as hard as possible.”

Here’s the situation with the top six in the Championship before today’s games.

2Brighton463493
3Reading46485
4Sheffield Wednesday461581
5Huddersfield46-281
6Fulham462880

Only three fans in five think we can win this game today at Griffin Park – it could be difficult to get the 3 points – we need Newcastle to surprise us.

Easily the weakest bench we have had all season, would like to see Sammy come on and see if he has progressed.

Ritchie is the only competent creative player out of that starting 11 and bench, no pressure or anything Ritchie.

Even Anita and Hayden would be a better combination in MF.

Would rather Perez wasnt there, another Lucanesque 90minutes ahead no doubt…

Wish he would go with 2 up front.

    10/11 again.
Fostino asked in a previous post why everyone, and Rafa, continues to put Hayden and Colback in midfield.
I think Shelvey’s stupidity has a lot to do with it.
He owes us big time when he comes back.

Do any of our Western Australian bloggers and readers know if there is a toon bar for match days in and around Perth where our fans and expats usually go to?

9-11 Really didn’t expect Perez in the team but half thinking that Colback would play.

I think that’s a canny bench, both Sammy and Murphy should get a good run out hopefully.

Sterry did OK when he played last season, I would think he’s impressed Rafa in training.

Things are pretty damn desperate when Sammy Ameobi is your last hope on the bench, should the LW or CAM have a bad game. A player that had to be loaned out to league 1 after flopping in the Championship with Cardiff. Anybody still think this squad is good enough to get by until the summer?

Have to say Spurs are a joy to watch and very easy on the eye. amazing 4th goal. i know he wasn’t going to come here any way but god knows how much dele alli would go for now

real beauty v beast contest. hopefully the days of the anti football coaches like pardew, allardyce and pulis are on the way out. WBA didn’t have a shot on goal.

As for today it always saddens me to see colback’s name, unless shelvey is next to him. other combos just don’t seem to work with JC.

Agree with all said about Perez but I hope he gets encouragement from the fans because reacting negatively to all his mistakes will only make it harder for him to turn things around.

Look forward to seeing Murphy and Lazaar in the Cup match Wednesday and the welcome return of Shelvey providing the forward thrust. Zola seems to think Gardener will bring PL quality to his side but he is going to be very rusty.
