Rafa Could Make Dramatic Move For Andros Townsend

There is rather dramatic news tonight in the Mail that Rafa Benitez would like to resign Andros Townsend at Newcastle and it seems that Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce may be open to the deal.

The question could be whether Andros Townsend is open to the deal with Newcastle well positioned at the top of the Championship maybe he would agree to come back to Newcastle.

Andros Townsend and Rafa Benitez – had great relationship

Certainly when Rafa was coaching Andros over the last two months of last season Andros was in the best form of his career and he was a star for Newcastle and finished second in our Player of the Season poll to Rob Elliot.

Andros has been nowhere near the form he showed at Newcastle at Crystal Palace this season, but maybe he will now realize that with a world-class manager coaching him he can reach his potential, which has always been huge.

And with Sam Allardyce not making a good start at Crystal Palace with a 3-0 defeat at West Ham today he needs the money to sign other players this month to as he tries to save Palace from relegation.

We’re not sure how accurate these reports are,  but it wouldn’t surprise us at all if Rafa does wants to sign the winger again, because it was obvious he knew exactly how to get the best out of the England International.

Andros would be a good acquisition for us if we can him back in for £13M and he can score goals too.

Some fans will not want him back because he left us when we were in trouble, but we think that most fans would welcome him back.

Let’s find out.

Would You Take Andros Townsend Back At Newcastle?

  • Yes (85%, 7,647 Votes)
  • No (15%, 1,377 Votes)

Total Voters: 9,024

Whoops I had “win” and “lose” initially in the poll – how daft can you get?

What do you think about Townsend maybe coming back to Newcastle?

Come back Andros, all is forgiven. And bring that other lad from Spurs as well, Moussa somebody -maybe not- but Andros can come back!

I am not surprised Crystal Palace want their money back & Townsend’s estimated 60k a week pay gone.

Said all along I’d take him back, despite him leaving for PL football. Can’t blame him like. His form for us had him back in the England fold after all. Yes, his form is suspect, but is that a surprise really? Pardew and Hippo Heed? He knows now who he can play under and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him saying ‘where do I sign’? He’ll tear up this league like Knockers does for Brighton. If we can get him, Rafa will sign him, as long as Palace are reasonable. 15m should do it I reckon. Bit more if we have to.

I might get some stick here. It I am not sure if I would have Townsend back. He has been awful this season but not because of that. That famous saying grass isn’t always greener. He should have given us one season at least. Why should we want him now that there is more than a good chance we will be promoted. No thanks Andros.

Do you not get it Ancient C ?

At CP Andros has been coached by Pardew and Allardyce – if he returned to us he would be operating under Senor Rafael Benitez Maudes – who’s boots they are not fit to polish !

Bobby, the only problem is we know how self-interested Townsend is, therefore if he did sign, he would likely want another release clause in case we do not get promoted… considering how low his stock has fallen, his release clause would have to be quite low, say around £8 million maybe.

I’d take a chance; think he would play well. But no way would I pay more than we sold him for. If we made a profit bringing him back, that would look like good business.

8 Mil sounds good, but do not think that will do it. I’d go up to 10.

Jib – if you want to compare Townsend’s form against the managers he played for, why not compare them all. How about Pochettino?

JackBall, no, I mean Townsend would want a low release clause to guarantee he could get a move if we didn’t get promoted. The fee to buy him would be higher I am sure.

Ancient, Palace fans wanted Gayle gone as well mate. We’ve seen what he can do for us. Some players suit a club. He’s always had the ability after all. We need a winger and I doubt there’s anybody better available. Rafa gave him confidence and so did the fans. And that’s all he’s lacking right now. Pardew and Hippo have never been great with flair after all. I say nothing to lose because we know what he’s capable of and he can step up. Don’t know where fans think we’ll get another England international to drop down a league from. Who else is available? Er, nobody, and he’s not much of a gamble imo.

BT after the Chelsea win are going to have discussion about player loyalty referring I guess to Diego Costa.
Who is going to be part of said discussion ?
    Michael Owen ?

Cannot believe the Townsend story – did not want him in the first place and certainly would not want him back. Even the Palace fans are saying he’s useless.

We looked good with him at the end of last year. Now a league lower, he should work well. Can’t believe he lost it in 6 months.

    Fellas
    Re last thread….
I was simply questioning whether Ash will now back Rafa….

As others have pointed out I am aware what Rafa has said about this window and it’s difficulties.

My worry is based on past windows when we dithered on a couple of million rather than just pay it ‘IF’ the manager thinks he is the improvement we need.

As for Townsend. ….in my own opinion I would take him on loan with a view to sign him ……If this is possible.

He fails to produce ! Then we don’t sign him. Does well and all forgiven.

I just want us to go up so Rafa can really show his worth.

We need players in, but in Rafa I still trust.

    Where is my Baileys

Hope perez can kick on from here.

Townsend should come back, and for those saying they dont want him back and hasnt done much at palace, 1. You remember just how brilliant townsend was under rafa 2. What do you expect when he’s being managed by allardyce and pardew.

Would take him in a heartbeat, him on the left with ritchie on the right would rip teams apart and give us so much more balance in attack.

He would be worth the gamble, although I wouldn’t have much faith in Townsend long-term. Getting to the PL is much more important right now, so… why not.

The reason he wasn’t playing for Spurs had nothing to do with form, so there’s no point bringing that up. He was great for us and he could be great again. England international not good enough, but second rate Championship players are? In January it’s rare for anybody decent to come up for sale. I’ll happily let Rafa make that decision.

Is this not the ideal scenario ?

He stays away and lets Rafa get on with it – then reappears at winter window time to talk releasing dosh .

I think a few are missing the point. It isn’t about how good he is/was. It’s about showing a bit of loyalty. He jumped ship as soon as we could relegated. Do you really want someone like that back ? As soon as it got tough again he would leave. He was great for us but I want a player with loyalty and fight.

    No thanks.

Townsend was actually quite poor when he first signed… he had a couple of months of good form, his incentive being to get to Euro 2016 – more so than playing specifically for Newcastle.

What else has Townsend done at Premier League level, aside from those few months?

Are we to base Townsend’s career worth, on 2 months of form?

He was the highest rated outfield player last season according to the fans who voted. Can anybody seriously tell me he wasn’t any good for us? It’s a total no Brainer for me and fortunately Rafa takes that decision, nobody on here. Players on form are not for sale, so you go for players who may be struggling right now for a particular manager, but who you know have the ability. Rafa brought the best out of him. No question about it. Let him do it again and watch us fly again. We need players in and frankly, I don’t see anybody better on offer. I trust Rafa to make the right choice. Simples!

    Id take him back.

Cant blame him for wanting to stay in the premier league. He did his job last season unlike his team mates.

Think he can recapture his form too.
