We have been very impressed with Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles for both his play on the field and his obvious leadership skills both on and off the pitch.
The 23 year-old is young to be captain of a club as big as Newcastle, but he’s taken it in his stride and works very well with Rafa Benitez who seems to trust the lad implicitly.
Jamaal’s competitive attitude is first class.
Rafa Benitez and Jamaal Lascelles
It seems like it’s nothing but the very best for Jamaal as he had this to say in the Chronicle today about the Championship:
“It’s very physical and I have always said it’s about who turns up and wants it more on the day.”
“As was shown last week, you can keep possession and play pretty football but if the other team are resilient and they catch you with a free-kick or corner.”
“You have to be on your job and anybody can win in the Championship.” “So it is my job, and a few others, to make sure we are on it and giving our all.”
“We’re looking forward to it, we have prepared the way we’d do so for any game.” “We have beaten them before and we can beat them again.”
“We can’t control what other teams do. We have to focus on ourselves but if teams around us are dropping points that’s in our favor.”
“We were happy with that result (QPR win over Reading) .” “We aren’t satisfied with the position we are in now.
“We want to be top and we want a gap.” “And we know what we have to do to get there, we just have to put the work in on match days.”
That’s what you want to hear from the captain – nothing but the very best – and yes we should be aiming to win the Championship this season, just like we did with the massively under-rated Chris Hughton seven years ago.
We need to tighten up that defense so we can have more clean sheets and then more wins.
Simple isn’t it?
