The Mail reported late yesterday afternoon that Newcastle were interested in signing Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace, with new manager Sam Allardyce looking for funds to strengthen the side in the last two weeks of the transfer window.
The chances of this happening must be slim at best, but nevertheless Rafa Benitez is an admirer of Townsend who was pulled both ways on whether he should stay at Newcastle in the summer but decided to leave.
There is no news as to whether Andros Townsend would now be willing to take a drop down to the Championship to join Newcastle.
Rafa Benitez instructs Andros Townsend
Go out and score five quick goals for us
He joined us last year and had a release clause in his contract if we were relegated and we even suppose he could do a similar thing and have a release clause in his contract if we are not promoted.
But that wouldn’t exactly show he is committed to Newcastle.
Some of the Newcastle fans simply will not have him back after he left us when we were in trouble and needed him.
However, that seems like it’s a minority with just over 80% of fans willing to welcome him back.
Maybe he also knows that a world-class manager is good for his career, because Rafa certainly got the very best out of him for two months when he managed the England International.
Andros was terrific for us in that last month or two of the season.
He’s never been anywhere near that form under Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce at Crystal Palace.
Would You Take Andros Townsend Back At Newcastle?
- Yes (85%, 7,647 )
- No (15%, 1,377 )
Total Voters: 9,024
If he doesn’t come in during January it wouldn’t surprise us if Rafa goes after him in the summer – if his plight at Palace doesn’t improve and we don’t sign a winger this month.
Comments welcome.

Comment #3No player has ever been in good form under Pardew or Allardyce so Andros is not an exception.
We need to strengthen the squad and an experienced PL player who can damage less able Championship defences would be an asset and provide more service for Gayle, Murphy and Mitro.
He knows the Toon and providing there is no dressing room conflicts then a season long loan might be good for all concerned, with an option to buy when in the Premiership.

Comment #4When we signed Murphy as the extra forward, some thought it was maybe signed for the sake of it and were puzzled if he’d hardly play. Yesterday showed exactly why he was needed, and it has very much paid off already by scoring the winning goal and gaining a valuable three points at a time when needed.
A good purchase by Rafa.

Comment #5Would take him back in a heartbeat!! Was the only player I wanted to stay and he was the only one who really tried his best to keep this club up. Can’t blame him for staying in prem and has been completely pardewed at CP. Richie is an ideal winger for pardew as he gets up and down and defends well. The likes of Zaha and Townsend do their damage at the other end and so become innafective under that clown just like HBA. Not many players can do both and so the team needs to be set up to get the best out of an attacking wide player. Mahrez is one player who does both well but there is not many like him and he is world class IMO.

Comment #6How many players in this day and age are exactly “committed” to the clubs they play for Ed ?
It’s a far cry today from the time when most of the players grew up locally.
The test of a player’s value to a club, is how he performs on the pitch, and by this measure, Townshend showed this in the closing weeks of last season. He is a mercenary like most of the others, but under Rafa, I think he’d do a good job for us.

Comment #9I’d like Brady instead of Townsend he is mentally lacking if you ask me to hot and cold like a switch and already proved he hasn’t got a loyal bone in his body. I say to reep what you sow. Brady will give you 8/10 every week and play where he is asked and never spit the dummy out. We will need his type next season.

Yesterday – got out of Jail didn’t see the game but listening on the radio was hell and reading reports sounds like Darlow was our star player again as our defence went to sleep time and time again letting the opposition in behind us.
also sounds like Perez had a better game of late – but worrying that our midfield created Sweet FA again.
Hopeully RAFA can bring in Cairney or someone like him
And I logged last week that we have became a One-trick pony in Gayle and relying on him to score our goals was worrying in-case he got injured.
My worries came to fruition yesterday and hope Murphy can deliver over the next month as it is going to be hard getting positive results without Gayle

Comment #12I was very unimpressed when he couldn’t wait to get out of toon and swap Rafa for Pardew. At the very least I want to see us come up and Palace head the other way to teach Andros a life lesson. At the end of the day, he’s been inconsistent throughout his career. We saw a purple patch. Would we see another?
