Here Is One Of Newcastle’s New Transfer Target – Sam Clucas

Newcastle were linked with two new transfer targets over the weekend – one of them was 19 year-old Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo and the other was Hull City’s 26 year-old  left midfielder Sam Clucas.

Sam joined Hull City from Chesterfield in July of 2015 on a three year deal for around £1.3M and since then he has played 75 times for the Tigers with 6 goals and has played 21 times in the Premier League this season.

So who exactly is Sam Clucas?

26 year-old left midfielder Sam Clucas

Sam was born in Lincoln and started his career as a youth player for Leicester City when he was just 10 years old and he stayed there for six years.

He was a student at Lincoln College studying sports development qualification and had a short spell at local club Nettleham towards the end of the 2008–2009 season.

He then joined his hometown club, but was released in 2010 after just one first team performance for Lincoln City.

In late 2011 he joined Hereford United and stayed there for a couple of years before joining Mansfield Town where he also stayed for two years before joining Chesterfield in 2014.

And finally in July 2015 he signed on at Hull City on a three year deal  and he has done well  playing at the Humberside club over the last 18 months.

So this lad has certainly come up through the lower leagues and maybe he’s a late developer.

Sam can play on the left wing, left wing-back  or left back so he seems to be a versatile player and probably is another winger Rafa is interested in.

He was given a contract extension at Hull last year and his contract now runs through the end of June, 2019.

In his career he has played 236 times with 40 goals and we have to assume if the news is correct – it was reported on Saturday by BBC Humberside’s Mike White – then Rafa must see something in this lad.

He’s a big lad and stands 6ft 2ins tall in his stocking feet.

What do you think?

Can’t see us signing Clucas! New manager there, he’s in the team, they’re battling. Think they’ll want to keep what they’ve got. Only seen him play a few times but he looks decent enough.
Ojo…not seen him, seems to come with the usual anfield hype. Liverpool youngsters seem to get hyped even more than Newcastle youngsters if possible…
Reckon we’ll be in from Bojan… got a client whos a big stoke fan, knows the owner etc and he reckons Bojan is off for 8-10m.. Think if he’s willing to go to Middlesboro as reported we’d have a chance of nabbing him. Good no.10 and can play left or right…

hibbit & Jib – From previous post – thanks guys I always assumed a club lending a player would insert a clause allowing them to recall but apparently not.

I’d take bojan but don’t think he’d come at this moment.

Would like to see us have a go at fa cup but dont risk our key players too much, we’ll have to against birmingham with all the injuries we’ve got, would like to see us up against a decent premier league team

    Throw the cup.

Really not a priority and with our current situation regarding fit personnel doubly so.

Kids and fringe players, if they progress then great.

Clucas is too old according to The People – he’s 26 , way past their estimation as to Ashley’s target age group for new players.
Not sure that he will have the experience we need.

Would be happy to see Abeid back – he’s physically quite a handful and has more experience now and has unfinished business for the Toon. I also think he was well liked when with the youngsters and Beardsley so could well be worth returning to the fold.

    Interesting question for the blog.
We’ve seen the reports that Carr might be given more transfer control, true or not…
Given the Carr signings, do people think we would have seen more from Ben Arfa, Cisse, Ba, Cabaye, Debuchy, Yanga-Mbiwa, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Remy, Riviere, Thauvin, anita, Saivet, De Jong etc in the premier league had BENITEZ and his staff been coaching and managing them compared to PARDEW,CARVER +MCCLAREN.
Theres been a lot of failures in the transfer policy, but the management was woeful and so were the tactics. Just wonder how many of those players might have had a better chance under Rafa of being successes

If I was townsend, I’d look at my options for long term, on one hand you’ve got Newcastle, where he performed, was loved and was improving under rafa and on the otherhand you’ve got palace, where the fans boo him and he’s been woeful.
If you look at next season, I know which team currently I’d fancy to be playing in the premier league….

On Clucas ,I saw him quite a few times at Mansfield and he never really stood out.
I think we already have to many average Joe’s in the side never mind any more

    DR Congo v Morocco tonight.

I’ve just realised that the 2 top contenders for goal of the season – Giroud and Carroll – both scored against Fat Sam’s CP

Nobody would like to see Arma back and playing more than me. 🙂 Problem is the FA changed its rules this season, something to do with teams just getting settled and having loanies they’d integrated into their teams – to suit the loaning club really – being recalled and spoiling their team. Understandable. I might be wrong, but as far as I’m aware once the final papers are signed, that’s it done. No early recalls anymore. You sign a contract and have to live with it. (Some players should take note of that too).
Basically, if we’ve already signed the contract, we’re done. Of course, that may not be the case for Arma. They might have left it until the end of January and just agreed on principle, but I’m not confident that’s the case. Maybe a lesson to learn for the future?
Shame, because the way we play Gayle is ideal for Arma, whereas the way they play at Barnsley would suit Mitro or Murphy a lot more. They won’t change either because it’s working for them, which makes it even more infuriating. I think we’ve let the lad down allowing him to remain, even if he’s happy enough there. Loans are to get games after all. I understand he’s been injured for a large part of his loan, but he needs to play more now he’s fit again.
Mainly though, we need him! Still, what’s done is done and Murphy is raring to go and I’m happy to let him try. He is a handful without being liable to get sent off. We need to change tactics though, so maybe Ritchie one wing and Sammy another until Atsu gets back. Plenty of crosses for the big man.

I think the line fed to players on signing now and then under Carr is totally different.

    With
    PARDEW,CARVER +MCCLAREN.
The story was come and get some nice big juicy PL wages plus the chance of being spotted and picked up by a CL club.

Now it’s come and join the Benitez vision where the sky’s the limit and be coached to be a better player by a 1st class coaching team and manager.

Now then, do those loan rules apply to the SFA? I have no idea, so maybe we could, if needed, recall the three lads who’ve left for Kilmarnock. Not all, but maybe one might do. Is Heardman one of those lads? Pleased Roberts will be getting games up there though, he has tremendous potential. SFA rules often differ to ours, so that might be worth looking into. Jib? Sounds like a job for you matey.

Can’t even begin to imagine that this Clucas story has legs. He looked good at Chesterfield granted, but he seems to be finding the PL a bit tough. Doing OK in a bad team, but hardly seems good enough to make it big. Nowt against the lad, he’s done well, but can’t see him as a Rafa player myself. Just another in a long line of players being connected to us imo.

Nothing in the press about Townsend yet, rumour doing the rounds that West Ham want him on loan. Still think the whole rumour is press speculation though.

Bobby we can do whatever we want while the window is open.

The 3 to Killy are Cal Roberts, Sean Longstaff and Freddie Woodman.

Heardman is at the club at the moment (but is cuptied )

Regardless of the football association these are FIFA rules.

The only players allowed to break loan contracts out of the window in an emergency are goalies now.

He has done well to get where he is. Its nice to see a player progress through the ranks like he has.I watched him occasionally through the odd game at Stags and never thought he was good enough to play in the PL. So fair play to the lad for making it.
But i would say there is better targets out there for us to pursue with one eye hopefully on the return to the PL

On a completely unrelated note, a bloke at work has got a load of laser engraved glass tankards with the club crest on, and the words ‘Keep calm, Sunderland are still sh**’ on them, if anybody is interested I could have word about ‘mates rates’?

I’ve just read the rules and players can only be recalled during transfer Windows. Once they’ve gone, they’ve gone, as I thought. However, technically we’re still in a transfer window, so how that would work with Arma I’ve no idea. My thoughts are that if we’ve signed the deal, he can only come back in the summer window, but I doubt such a situation like this was envisaged. We are still in a window after all, so that might be one that the lawyers might have to look into. We only loaned him two weeks ago max, so does that mean he can’t be recalled until the following window, or could we work it out with Barnsley? The rules strictly say once gone there can be no early recalls, but to be fair, it doesn’t mention if we change our mind before the window shuts. Make of that what you will because frankly, I can’t decide without further information to help. I’m sure the lawyers would know, but as usual they’ll see things from different angles and argue the toss. Being paid by the hour they’ll let us know just after the window shuts, greedy so and so’s. I see a loophole there myself, but I am biased. I want him back. 🙂

Jazzy, Aye, there are much better targets, unless Rafa sees him as one of those he could improve greatly with the right coaching, but he has done well but can’t see him getting much better now.
