Who Is Sheyi Ojo – Newcastle’s Latest Transfer Target

Some transfer news over the weekend was that Rafa Benitez is now interested in getting 19 year-old Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo on loan at Newcastle for the rest of the season.

And this youngster seems like he could become a great player in the future and he has already had a couple of loan spells in the Championship with Wigan and Wolves.

So what do we know about this player?

19 year-old Sheyi Ojo – Liverpool’s talented young winger

Ojo was born in Hemel Hempstead and joined the MK Dons’ Academy when he was just 10 years old.

He showed how precocious he was at a young age and by the time he was just 13, he had already played for the Dons’ U18 side and was even training with the first team squad.

Ojo then joined Liverpool as a 14-year-old for a sizable fee of £2M and even then there were some other big clubs after the winger, with Chelsea one of the clubs that missed out on him.

Ojo came through the famous Liverpool Academy and made his debut for the Reds in January of last year.

He has so far played 12 times with one goal for the Liverpool first team, but has made only one appearance for the club this season.

So it could be advantageous to both Liverpool and Newcastle that he gets some playing time at Newcastle under the expert coaching of Rafa Benitez.

Ojo joined Wigan Athletic on loan in early February of 2015 and played 11 times for them that season.

And then after signing a new long-term contract with Liverpool he joined Wolves on a season long loan in the summer of 2015.

He appeared 17 times for Wolves scoring two goals for them last season.

Rafa of course is in good standing at Liverpool so there must be a decent chance that we can get this lad in on loan and it would seem like a win-win situation for both clubs.

We’ll just have to see what happens, but with our mounting injuries it would be very good if we can sign a winger, striker and creative midfielder in the next two weeks.

The January transfer window closes at 11:00 pm on Monday January 31st so there’s not a lot of time left.

What do you think?

He won’t come, Rafa only does loans with options to buy. Bindippers won’t sell him at a decent price – they bought him for £2m 5 years ago, they’re going to want £8-10m, and I can’t see us agreeing that much.

Anyone doubting the signings of Hanley and Gamez need to look at the bigger picture, our defence has been woefully thread bare for the last five years and three regular starters left in the summer, we needed a quick fix, is Hanley any worse than Willo who made as many starts as Collo or Taylor in the PL.

Gamez was bought because Daryl Janmaat wanted out.
Sels was bought because Krul and Elliot has ACL’s and he was Belgian Professional Goalkeeper of the Year.

    Hi Jib

Glad to see you’re back and hope you enjoyed Spain. I actually got grief for telling people I was missing you!

Thank you for pointing out, as only you can, in your inimitable and gracious style, that I had missed seeing the word ”unlike” in an earlier post, ths rendering it somewhat irrelevant. My 55 year old eyes weren’t what they were admittedly. Specsavers beckons.

I’m not quite sure what you keep wanting me to say re – tactics, formation etc. My opinion for what it’s worth is why try and second guess a man with one of the most successful CVs in world football over many years.

Not everyone likes 4231, but hey it’s got us top of the league and scoring a mountain of goals.

With the team I coach we have with varying degrees of success used 433, 343, 352, 4411 and 442 depending on the opposition. But if 4231 works for Rafa and the table suggests it does, then why change it for changes sake. There was one very strange lad even saying he was bored of Gayle!!!

This is not the great squad people make out. We lost sissoko, wijni, townsend, janmatt cabella, thauvin etc and apart from a couple of inspired buys, in particular Gayle, Rafa has worked wonders with in what is in reality still quite an average squad.

At a glance I thought this guy was an anagram of Jonjo Shelvey 🙂
