Newcastle Miss Out On Another Transfer Target

We are surprised that Newcastle did not move in quickly and sign 20 year-old Virtus Entella left back Cheick Keita, but it looks like we have missed out on the player with tonight’s opponents Birmingham City having agreed a deal for him.

It was news a few days ago that new Italian manager Gianfranco Zola was keen on the player and there is news today in the Italian outlet Il Secola that a deal seems to have been agreed between the two clubs.

20 year-old Virtus Entella left back Cheick Keita

The Virtus Entella Chairman is Antonio Gozzo and this is what he has said in Il Secola about the deal with Birmingham City:

“It’s our first big market operation to when we are in B.”

”We are pleased to have been right about this guy that we have taken on a free transfer and has been with us for three years.”

“We give him our best wishes.”

Cheick has been interesting  a number of clubs with his good form at left back this season in Italy’s second division.

But it’s Birmingham who have moved in and paid around €2M for the Keita: that’s the nominal amount Virtus Entella were asking for their Paris-born player.

Keita is of Mali descent and he moved to French second division club Virtus Entella in the summer of 2014, when he was released by Monaco – after he came through the Youth Academy there.

Keita has played regularly over the last two seasons in the Virtus Entella first team and has currently made a total of 48 appearances for his club over that time and he would have been one for the future at Newcastle.

But it doesn’t look like that will happen.

Sorry state of affairs if transfer deals are being based on a bake off.
Perhaps he thinks Zola’s pasta is better that Rafa’s paella.

The McCarthy / Sunderland link seems more that the 2 clubs have something each other want than McCarthy wanting to play for the makems. Koeman is keen on their centre half apparently.. Kone?

How do we know all these players we have supposedly missed out on were actual targets anyway ?
