Ayoze Perez And Daryl Murphy Start

Rafa Benitez has just announced his team for the game against Rotherham United this afternoon and it’s all change for Newcastle once again.

The team is almost what we expected – but we had Colback in for Hayden in defensive midfield.

This is what Rafa said at his press conference yesterday about this game:

“It’s a game tomorrow that obviously we’ll try to win.”  “Because of their position, people will say it’ll be easy but it will not be easy.”

“It’s the Championship –  we must respect Rotherham.”

“We have little knocks, little things, but I think they will be fine.” Mitrovic still not ready, Ameobi and Sterry in the squad.”

It’s a game we must win to keep pace with Brighton who beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 last night and are back on top of the league 2 points above us.

Down to the bare bones – the bench is looking very light. Benitez was not joking.

Just looking at our fixture list

After todays game, we have Oxford away in the cup next weekend then home games v QPR and Derby the following week. ACON finishes that weekend.

Assuming we have no other major injuries between now and then, we should have virtually a full squad to select from for the week after that at Wolves

It could be risky to fully rely on the players coming back from ACON. We have seen players head away for the ACON before, and come back playing lethargically.

I remember that one season Ba had about 13 goals, he came back from ACON and didn’t score another goal that season.

Not arsed how he scores it, just had a flutter on it haha, if I was to guess ad say right foot from the half way line, bounces off the upright, then hits the inside post to the other post then comes back out hits the keeper on the back of the head then goes in the net ????

Ancient…Wasn’t that the same time that Cisse arrived? Seem to recall Ba was pushed out to the wing for the remainder of that season (or at least the majority of it). Then in the summer, it was changed around and Cisse was pushed out wide to accommodate Ba and believe it or not, Cisse’s goal scoring also declined.

I should have added though, that you are right (of course), a major tournament certainly can and does drain players. Something that should be factored in.

From Rafa’s comments about the many games ahead, it does sound like he is pushing for new players still.

Ibiza, correct. Although Ba was still getting into advanced positions on Left, and I believe he did play some games as a striker towards the end of that season.

It was a terrible idea to play Ba on the left, but still, his performances after coming back from ACON were disastrous.

expatmag: It’s not really the amount of games they play at ACON, I think it comes down to some players being let loose and not looked after properly.

Klopp sent a physio with Mane to the ACON, which I think is a great idea.

Perhaps we should feel sorry for Palace – they have been Pardewed – self inflicted wound
…. and it’s not that anyone could wish anything bad to happen to poor old Big Sam!

Re that ACON, Senegal got knocked out in the group stages and Ba and Cisse returned a lot earlier than expected so fatigue shouldnt have been a factor

Ancient…It was a while back now. My memory had made no allowance for ACON as the reason for his slump, but it could be a strong factor.

As you say, he did still get into advanced positions. I seem to recall defending Pardews decision at the time (oh the good ole days) with examples of opportunities he could have taken (and would have previously).

I put it down to confidence at the time. Anyway, not sure we want to re-visit those times. Almost kick off time.

I just read an interesting fact in relation to players going away for ACON: “Of the 99 signings that Sir Alex Ferguson made as manager of Manchester United only four were African”
