We are hoping that if Rafa Benitez needs to go out and buy Andros Townsend to get him in January, then owner Mike Ashley will support him in doing that, always knowing that fee is part of the overall transfer funds allocated by Ashley for this month and in the summer.
That’s also true for James McCarthy of Everton – if we need to buy him this month and Rafa wants to do that, then he should be allowed to.
But if we cannot get a central midfielder and another winger in this month we could be stretched if we do start to pick up more injuries to key players – like Dwight Gayle and Jonjo Shelvey for example.
Vurnon Anita – out injured for about six weeks
There is always the possibility of more suspensions too – although those should be easier to control with better discipline on the field.
Rafa has pointed out today that we can so easily pick up a number of injuries and be struggling very quickly.
Just remember the game at Brentford last Saturday when we had three injuries and two of them – Dwight Gayle and Vurnon Anita – seem longer term.
This is what Rafa has said about the injuries today as reported in the Shields Gazette:
“We need to add to our squad because of the number of games.” “It’s a very physical league.”
“Look at Anita. One bad tackle, and you lose a player for five or six weeks. You need the numbers.”
Maybe that’s a hint to Mike Ashley to loosen up the purse strings a bit this month if we need to buy?
But first things first and we must not slip up today and Newcastle have to pick up all 3 points against bottom of the table Rotherham – come hell or high water.
