25M worth of strikers out missing today and first time Championship manager Rafa Benitez’ shrewd 3M signing does the business three games in a row but Hoots is doing a better job some say.

Always thought Murph was a good signing. I was just surprised he wanted to come and sit on the bench. Why would a 3 mil insurance policy concern people. Also, not saying I would have been smart enough to find and sign him.

Murphy has turned out to be a great signing for us along with yedlin. I was over the moon we signed him. I seen him play a few times before Tottenham signed him and thought he was a great prospect but I tell you what ciaran Clark is turning on to be the best bit of business we did. I turned my nose up when we signed him but I made a big mistake. Never gets the accolades as others but a massive part of our team now.

    Jackball,
I’m happy to say I thought it was an excellent, shrewd signing at the time, some people were disappointed but were we going to get Das Bost to sit on the bench and compete with Mitro?

I remember when he was the lead rumor. Can’t recall how contemporaneous it was with Gayle. But had we signed him, we may not have discovered how lethal Gayle is. Nice for Rafa to find a player of Murphy’s quality willing to wait his time. How many with his CV would have.

So we’re still just short of being able to take record points by one win.

    beer,
Don’t wosh any harm on him but it would be nice if his little knock he’s due was a week before facing us, that would demoralise them.

Here goes my thoughts on today

Poor first half showing yet created decent chances and got a break when it looked like from the Gallowgate that Darlow was lucky he didn’t concede a penalty.
Gallowgate End was getting frustrated with our slow play and lack of movement and pace – Got to try and be more patient

Back to the usual defensive set up and back to the slow build up. Rest of team relied on Shelvey to much who was man marked .

First goal a touch of class from Shelvey’s free kick Yedlin’s cross and Murphy’s control and shot.

From then on only going to be one winner

My MOM today – Hayden who showed defended well and always wanted the ball and linked up play.

    ratings
Darlow 6 Apart from his moment of madness steady as usual but has got to be quicker on his decision making when he has the ball – to many times today players were in great positions to receive pass throw out but dallied on the ball

Yedlin 7 best of our defenders great going forward with his speed created two of our goals from his pace and great block/tackle after Darlows hick.

Clark 6 steady as usual this season got in a couple of excellent tackles but slow on his decision making with passes.

Lascalles 5 thought he was poor had acres of space to day to carry the ball forward but always wants to pass sideways or backwards which left Shelvey coming far to deep to collect the ball (except for one excellent pass over the top which led to our third goal)

Dummett 6 Did well actually had a decent game going forward put in a couple of decent crosses

Ritchie 7 continued from Wednesday night – all action covered every blade of grass and on hand in the right position to tuck away two goals

Shelvey 6 – didn’t have chance to shine today until last twenty minutes – man marked for most of game – great awareness and pass from free kick for first goal.
Played like a third centre half for most of the first half

Goufran 6 – not as effective playing out wide as he was on Wednesday – still did OK and his saved shot led to second goal

Hayden 8 – My man of the match – had a very good game whether defending breaking up play and linking up midfield with attack especially when Shelvey was playing deep first half

Murphy 7 Great first goal and led the line well showed how to control the ball hold up and bring other players into the game

Perez 7 Played OK but frustrating got into some great positions but final pass or decision poor

    Subs
Sterry 5 did what he had to do
Sammi 6 – was it a taller Atsu or a shorter Sammi runs plays the same way as Atsu but did well and brought the crowd to life – put in a couple of great crosses.
Lazaar 5 did well going forward bur tackling not his strong point

Good win today. 1st half we seemed nervous. 2nd half controlled the game and did what we need to do in all our remaining games. Don’t sit back at 2-0 finish them off which is what we did today

    Legolas,
Despite what people say about Hanley he’s been an excellent signing, he’s sat on that bench waiting for his chance and has looked solid enough when called upon, we were never going to get World class signings and we needed to patch up one of the consistently worse PL defences ever seen on the competition.

Your right about Lacelles mate. Frustrated the fcuk out of me. There was atleast 3 occasions where he brought it up to the half way and then past side ways when Yedlin and Ritchie were on

In fact apart from Sels and Lazaar they’ve all been goid signings and even with Lazaar he’s not been seen enough to really tell, Gamez has been unlucky but imo he was only brought in to ensure CB’s never got played as FB’s and for his ecperience in training with a very young squad, I don’t think he was brought in mind as a regular.

What a player Hayden could become.
Showed what we miss when Colback plays.
Got the potential to be Rafa’s best value for money buy.

It would seem madnees to play Gayle in any other role than what he has been doing but if you had someone as lethal as Gayle playing in Perez’s position then we could see a lot more goals, could Gayle be a No 10 though.

    Jail,

    Re: Hanley

I agree. He has done a job every time he has played. I just think Clark has had more experience in bigger games as he played in premiership for villa and could do us a job in the prem if/when we get there.

    Legolas,
    100%,
But if Lewis Dunk had been bought for ridiculous money and stopped Clarke from getting a game, would people have said that the Clarke signing was a disaster, worse still if we’d paid 16M for Dunk which is probably what it would have took to get him and Clarke was better we’d have a seriously unhappy player sitting moping about the place wanting to go back to Brighton.

It’s funny how different people see different things. I read an article (think it was chronicle) tonight and they said lascelles was great today. I can’t comment as I only listen on radio but they said he was poor today as many who went have said.

Lascelles was more frustrating than anything else. His distribution was shit as he had players in forward positions he could have released the ball to but dithered and then went side ways. Clark was class today and his distribution puts lascelles to shame

Hayden is starting to look really accomplished now with some solid consistent performances. The only reason we got him is is that Arsenal weren’t prepared to let him play himself into the team. If he keeps improving at this rate we’ll be getting some sniffers on his trail.

    JamesToon,
Exactly and a CB pairing is probably the most important two positions on the pitch, just because Rafa doesn’t regularly swap them out does not make Hanley a disaster, there are about six to eight people on here who find fault with every thing that’s being done at the moment, the worst bit is as well and I expected more from Moanster, is that he doesn’t come on and post after a good win but is more than happy to tell us how Rafa got it wrong when we don’t.

    Shirebrook
First half Lascalles did my HEED in seemed to have no vision or confidence to carry the ball forward when he was given acres of space so looked to pass it sideways when players in front were making moves.

Word to the Rotherham fans who were brilliant today brought their full quota and made a canny din.

    Budge 123
Without Colback in the team and Shelvey playing deep seemed to give Hayden space to play his game

    Shirebrook and Jail,

I tell you what I am loving at the minute. People can have a moan about certain players yet we are winning the majority of our games. Compared to last season when it was terrible from the second game.
Jail, as you said we needed to invest in our defence big style and I think I can honestly say Lascelles, Clark and Hanley are better than Colo, Williamson and Taylor.

If it’s just distribution to say Lascelles was poor then that’s harsh, maybe he needs to work on his decision making as does Dummet his crossing along with Perez’s shooting.
