Newcastle beat bottom of the league side Rotherham United today at St. James Park in front of another sell-out crowd of over 52,000 fans.
And that was our first double of the season and this time it was a 4-0 win and out first clean sheet in eight games, so Rafa will be pleased with that.
So Newcastle go top of the Championship once again and it was another brace for Matt Ritchie, one from Perez and the third goal in three games for Daryl Murphy.
We are now one point clear of Brighton who have one game in hand – and they play that make-up game on Tuesday night at home to Cardiff City so they will need to win that one to go back on top.
Newcastle players celebrate after Matt Ritchie scored fourth goal – his second
Murphy got his third goal for Newcastle just before the break and it came from a nice DeAndre Yedlin cross after the American was brilliantly found by that man Jonjo Shelvey – and the Irishman made no mistake to make it 1-0 at the break.
Rotherham had played well in the first half and had made life difficult for the home side but Newcastle went for it in the second half.
Just four minutes into the second half Newcastle went 2-0 up with a goal from the in-form Matt Ritchie after the goalkeeper could only palm the ball.
Next up was Ayoze Perez after 59 minutes with Newcastle’s third goal after more good work from Yedlin on the right wing.
Richie then scored his second brace in four days with his second goal of the game and that’s now 10 goals for the former Bournemouth winger.
This was a professional display from the lads in a game we should be winning – and that’s now our 19th league win of the season in 27 games – not too bad – a 7-% win rate in the ;league this season.
But we have had trouble with teams like Wolves and Blackburn at home in the league this season – but not today with the Millers.
Rafa Benitez brought on Sammy Ameobi, Lazaar and then Jamie Sterry to give the lads a run out again the first team.
It was Sterry and Ameobi’s first game in the first team this season after they returned from their loan spells.
