Newcastle Beat Rotherham 4-0 – Go Top Again

Newcastle beat bottom of the league side Rotherham United today at St. James Park in front of another sell-out crowd of over 52,000  fans.

And that was our first double of the season and this time it was a 4-0 win and out first clean sheet in eight games, so Rafa will be pleased with that.

So Newcastle go top of the Championship once again and it was another brace for Matt Ritchie, one from Perez and the third goal in three games for Daryl Murphy.

We are now one point clear of Brighton who have one game in hand – and they play that make-up game on Tuesday night at home to Cardiff City so they will need to win that one to go back on top.

Newcastle players celebrate after Matt Ritchie scored fourth goal – his second

Murphy got his third goal for Newcastle just before the break and it came from a nice DeAndre Yedlin cross after the American was brilliantly found by that man Jonjo Shelvey – and the Irishman made no mistake to make it 1-0 at the break.

Rotherham had played well in the first half and had made life difficult for the home side but Newcastle went for it in the second half.

Just four minutes into the second half Newcastle went 2-0 up with a goal from the in-form Matt Ritchie after the goalkeeper could only palm the ball.

Next up was Ayoze Perez after 59 minutes with Newcastle’s third goal after more good work from Yedlin on the right wing.

Richie then scored his second brace in four days with his second goal of the game and that’s now 10 goals for the former Bournemouth winger.

This was a professional display from the lads in a game we should be winning – and that’s now our 19th league win of the season in 27 games – not too bad – a 7-% win rate in the ;league this season.

But we have had trouble with teams like Wolves and Blackburn at home in the league this season – but not today with the Millers.

Rafa Benitez brought on Sammy Ameobi, Lazaar and then Jamie Sterry to give the lads a run out again the first team.

It was Sterry and Ameobi’s first game in the first team this season after they returned from their loan spells.

Newcastle: Darlow; Yedlin (Sterry, 81), Lascelles, Clark, Dummett; Hayden, Shelvey; Ritchie, Perez, Gouffran (Ameobi, 63); Murphy (Lazaar, 75).
Subs not used: Sels, Haidara, Hanley, Barlaser.

Rotherham: O’Donnell; Fisher, Wood, Belaid, Mattock; Smallwood; Forde (Kelly, 87), Vaulks, Adeyemi, Taylor (Allan, 75); Yates (Ward, 61).
Subs not used: Bilboe, Wilson, Warren.

Attendance: 52,208

Yedlin for me 2 assists unbelievable speed and a very important last ditch tackle after darlows clanger

But shelvey runs the show and so good to have him back

truly impressed with yedlin, thought he was great electric speed with a nice assists, on Townsend he was one of the players who i was most gutted about leaving us in the summer i’d be delighted if we somehow resign him we’ll have to wait and see still a few days left of january yet

decent performance, took a bit of time to get at rotherham but should really of scored more on chances, what is good to see is that we didnt back down after scoring, kept creating things and showed a bit ruthlessness thats been missing… to say like darlow did drop a clanger but it was a hell of a recovery to block the shot when he had to hurdle a sliding defender whilst watching where the rotherham player was trying to put it…..comical but great save at the same time.

Also thought Murphy done really well today he seemed to win everything and kept the ball well which meant we could build attacks!

Great game great result, we showed today the we have height and pace in the team and both served us well. Shelvey even marked still managed some great passes.

Bit sloppy here and there that could have cost us, but we reacted well to correct those mistakes.

Great show by the lads, Shelvey gets my MOM.

Hail, from the match thread. I stated why I would like to see what Hayden can do at CB, because of his dominance in the air. He also clearly has pace and can challenge. I know you don’t do your homework or like to base your opinions on any kind of facts, but Hayden has been a CB in his earlier playing days.

Just to add, Hail. If you think Hayden if the future of Newcastle in CM, based on some championship performances, well, I am glad you are not the one making the calls.

Interesting facts for Ashley and Carr:

Three goals today from two players signed as over 25 year olds!

Now if Ashley’s preferred model had been the way, would we have been where we are today?
