Rafa’s View – First Half Was A Little Bit Nervy

When Rafa Benitez gives his after game interviews after each game,  he is always straight and analyzes the game and what we did good and what we didn’t do good.

And Rafa was a bit critical of Newcastle’s first half performance today in the 4-0 win over Rotherham United – and things started to go Newcastle’s way once that man Daryl Murphy scored his third goal in three games for us  just before half time.

Daryl is proving to be a smart acquisition for Newcastle and the 33 year-old Irish International is delivering when he’s been called on – due to injuries – and you cannot ask more than that from any player.

Daryl Murphy celebrates his goal on 45 minutes

Here’s what Rafa has said after the game as reported in the Shields Gazette tonight – he wasn’t happy with that first half:

“We knew before that it could be a difficult game in terms of over-confidence,”

“We needed to start well, and I think that we had the control for around 25 minutes and they were not creating anything.”

“Then we made a silly foul in the middle.”  “It was a corner, and then we started having problems and they grew a little bit in confidence.”

“It was a little bit nervy.” “Then we scored the goal at the end of the first half.”

“Then, the goal early in the second half made the difference.” “We had more control and it was just a question of time if we could score another goal.”

“Maybe they had one or two chances on the counter attack, but just one was very dangerous and the others we were comfortable.”

“We have to give credit to them, because they were working hard at the beginning and it was not easy to create clear chances.”

“We had a couple from Ayoze which could have been better. “We needed to win, we did it.”

“Four  goals, clean sheet, three points and we are going in the right direction hopefully.”

That’s Newcastle’s 19th win in 27 league games for a 70% win rate – that seems to be going in the right direction.

You can clearly see the composed prem class of both Shelvey and Ritchie, when Ritchie is on song he is just great to watch… With a bit more pace he’d be unplayable at times and defensive awareness is great, that’s probs why Yedlins is running away with the voting, it allowed him to play.

Sporting Lisbon said to be considering cancelling Markovic’s loan deal. That should spark up a few rumours – we were linked with him in the past.

‘……..benitez himself said he likes to develop young players we just got to balance the scales as it work best….’

Your message is sound but let’s hope that Ashley gets it into his thick skull that Rafa should be left to run things as he thinks best – with input from Carr of course.

But he needs to accept that Rafa’s managerial success puts him way ahead of Carr in terms of football knowledge and nous.

    Good game today eventually.
Once we stepped it up the gulf in class showed.

Yedlin”s pace makes such a difference to the team.
Shelvey and Ritchie played well and created for others . Hayden had a great game strong in defence but created and threatened also.
Murphy put himself ahead of Mitro as Gayle s back up I think.
Lascelles was a worry with poor passing from the back.

The chants for Sammy were fun but shows the crowd see him as a bit of a joke rather than a serious option.

But great results and if Barnsley stay ahead we are 9 points clear!

I couldn’t watch the match. For those who watched, how would you rate Sammy’s performance?

Kilbane – better than expected I would say.
Was getting urged to shoot at every opportunity by the crowd but often played the right ball . made a great through ball at one point.

I was at the game. Great result in the end and could have been a lot more.

However, Rotherham had no intention of playing football. Their no. 4 man-marked Shelvey and they played a high back line very narrow and tried to press.

Until Murph’s goal went in the crowd were showing typical vocal displeasure in such circumstances. Basically, Rotherham had seen Wednesday and Blackburn do a number on us and tried to copy their plan.

In the end it was easy. And i hope this deters all other cack teams from trying this.

It was mint to see Shelvy lose his marker numerous times in the second half.

Some good saves from Darliw including a mint one to atone for his own error.

    Yeds was class.

    Chuffed! 🙂

Sammy..sterry or lazaar were not on long enough really to rate properly and the match was over too when they came on too. Strange that Sammy played on the right wing instead of left. Wise subs however..I suspect it was to protect key performers for currently under resourced positions I. E. Goofy..Yedlin. I highly doubt Sammy will get a new contract. I’m more interested to see what happens with lazaar.

Om another note…I’d sooner Brady then townsand

Andy carroll when not injured is an awesome striker…A defenders nightmare. I’d happily see him return. Great to see 3 local lads finish the game today

Was a thoroughly enjoyable day out with the bairn, that first half was getting a bit nervy, I’m not sure if it’s the fans getting on their backs but just we stop being so loud, Dummet got a bit of stick for some of his woeful crosses mind. Was praying for a fifth to shut Moanster up as we haven’t had a five yet, although any type of win seems to prevent him posting.
Btw the was our second double of the season, Brentford was the first last week, many more to come I think.

Back from the match too, a few notes i made ( in my own mind),
We would be far more balanced with both sides attacking and Lazaar did more in 10 mins than Dummet did all game ( I quite like Dummet for his defending but hes poor in advance of the 1/2 way line) The right hand side stole the show going forward, Yedlin and Ritchie just works, especially vs poor opposition.
Shelvey ,even when man marked can run the game ,
Murphy is a very good lone striker with the right service and people round him, hes almost sheareresque in his hold up play and has more movement than Mitro, i wouldnt mind seeing him and Gayle up front as i think it would work better thN Mitro and Gayle.
Perez was better today but Shelvey should stop having a go at him for having the audacity to try different things.
Sameobi can bring something to this team in this league and brought the best chant of the day when he came on “if Sammy scores were on the pitch”
The referees are consistently bad in this league, missed 2 stonewall penalty handballs for us in the first 10 mins and a handball later on outside of the box, but his handling of the game seemed toget bareable as the game went on (and after we had scored).
Rotheram fans , what can you say about them?
The y were great, they came in huge numbers (probably one of the biggest away supports this season) had good noise about them (in the first half ) and as far as i could see were still there at the end even though we were 4-0 up and looked like scoring more.
Another win a few more goals in the +column and no fresh injuries to worry about, back top of the league with Reading and Leeds both losing and more runouts for the younguns again….its been a good week and hopefully Cardif can make it better HWTL

Sammy made a lasting impression on my mind when he scored in the first minute of the second half against Tottenham to level the score before Perez won us the game. Sammy was average when he played but Newcastle was worse off without him as we saw last season. I want his contact renewed. Diego Costa was loaned out several times till he broke out at age 26. We need to keep faith with him.

Also about Dummet’s none attacking movements, remember he was converted from a CB.
