There’s news today that Aleksandar Mitrovic is set to return from his knee injury, and it looks like he may even be fit for next week’s trip to Oxford United in the FA Cup 4th round, although that’s not certain.
That’s very good news for Newcastle, because when he was stretchered off at Birmingham after five minutes, it looked like the Serbian striker could be out for the season.
It looked like he may have damaged the knee ligaments.

Mitro suffered an awful gash to his knee which required a number of stitches, but it looks like it has cleared up well.
Rafa Benitez has given an update on the injury as reported in the Shields Gazette:
“I’m quite optimistic. “He is doing well.” “He has no stitches now. He can bend the knee.”
“You see him walking now, he is fine. “For Mitro, next week is not too early for him.”
“We will see. It’s not a massive injury.”
“I don’t have the timescale, but he’s doing well, improving every day,”
“Mitro is a different thing, he will be sooner than Gayle.”
At the moment Newcastle have only Daryl Murphy and Ayoze Perez fit, but Yoan Gouffran showed what he has been saying all season – that he can play up front as the lone striker.
The Frenchman scored a great opportunist goal and played very well on Wednesday night in the 3-1 win over Birmingham City.
It will be great to have Mitro back soon.
