Magpies Locked In Negotiations With Palace – Other Deals Possible

Rafa Benitez has said over the weekend he is hopeful of Newcastle getting a breakthrough in the transfer window and it seems our best chance of getting somebody through the door is Andros Townsend who would be a great signing for us – again.

Crystal Palace and Sam Allardyce are warming to the thought of getting a loan fee from Newcastle for Andros and of course we will also pay the player’s wages if he does come on loan this month with an option or obligation to buy in the summer.

Andros Townsend in Newcastle colors last season

Newcastle are negotiating with Palace on the loan fee and also on the transfer fee for him in the summer, and the Tyneside club are trying to make the deal as attractive as possible to the London club.

It could still be  long hard grind to get this deal done this month but Rafa definitely wants this player back and by all reports Andros now realizes he made a big mistake in leaving Newcastle last summer.

Even though he deserted us in late June he would still be a popular signing among the vast majority of the Geordie fans.

We also hope we can get other players through the door in the next 8 days before the transfer window slams shut on Tuesday 31st January at 11:00 pm.

Newcastle were linked yesterday in the Croatian press with an ambitious £25M move for two top Croatian teenagers who play for the Dynamo Zagreb first team – two 19 year-olds.

Filip Benkovic is a 6ft 4ins center-back and Ante Coric is an attacking midfielder who has already played twice for the Croatian national side.

Here’s our report on that potential double transfer.

Rafa also wants James McCarthy of Everton who is still available, soe other deals are still possible this month.

Let’s hope we can get some players signed before a week tomorrow.

If, and it’s a HUGE “IF”, we can get Townsend and the two Croations in then what a result that would be, as for McCarthy, do we really need him? We’ll get promotion without him and why do we need him in the Prem?

The Croatian lads sound far and away the most exciting prospects so far and fit Ash’s youth model, if not price tag!

Just not sure about Townsend as I think it would spell the end of Atsu who under Rafa’s tutelage could really develop. There’s also Aarons to come into the equation hopefully

We are all assuming Townsend will play on the left or right but I’m just wondering if Rafa is thinking he could play as a number 10 which we have never really found a solution for.

    Dubai Micky ,
Very doubtful we are even in for the two Croatians ….could be just agents drumming up business ( as someone said earlier).
Not just that but since Rafa has come in no targets seem to be even known for sure until we see them at Benton .
As for Townsend ,would not be the worst signing and for us a loan ( with a fee agreed if we want him)is maybe better so he has to play out of his skin to get a move .
If it’s a loan with an obligation to buy then it’s a risk as I am still to be convinced how motivated he is to play for us and I don’t like the message it sends to players .I wonder what the current squad make of his arrival?
Much rather take the lad from Fulham for now and use our money wisely .
Just shows how mad January is when you look back and think we were offering 20 mil plus for berahino .

Just hope that the buy out clause for Atsu hasn’t been set at a ridiculous price by Chelsea and that if that’s not met they can take him back.
Not good for the player nor for us. Atsu seems to be developing well, clearly gives 100% and by all accounts has taken to Newcastle, would be a pity not to keep him and let him realise his potential.
The point being maybe a Townsend permanent deal is cheaper that an Atsu and we know that Ashley likes a deal .
Question is which one ? If it’s both ok !

@Martoon #3, perhaps Ritchie would suit the ’10 role and andros on a wing? Ritchie can pick a pass, has good movement on and off the ball and knows where the goal is. He’s not the fastest winger so maybe well suited to a new role!

Were going to need cover all over the pitch if we go up, Whoever comes in will be good enough to play in the prem, thats all i want, some players good enough to play for us in a balanced side capable of holding our own when we go up , after thT we need upgrades on a few to take us to the next level…..baby steps to adult strides……Rafa has 3 year to get us top half of the table……..he will hopefully start that now and finish it when were competing with CL sides for their players, that wont happen in 3 years but hopefully it means Rafa id successful and has been given more time and money to make us top half and above

    Martoon,
Has Townsend ever played that role ? Only ever known of him as a winger .
To me his strength seems to be cutting in or pulling defenders wide to leave space for others to come into.
Really hard to judge him on last year ….was he really outstanding or just simply the only guy who looked like he gave a shit in that final third ?

    For anyone who is interested.
Dynamo Zagreb seem to have a few very talented young players in their first team squad. I’ve been looking at some videos on you tube of the 2 players mentioned Ante Coric & Filip Benkovic, both look very good. However, the one that caught my eye was another 19 year old ( turns 20 this week) who plays CM is Bojan Knezevic. If we have scouted the other two I would imagine we’ve noticed this lad, worth keeping an eye on him.

    Toon rich,
That is not a bad call on Richie . I can see him in that role.
Pace wise he isn’t electric but has quick feet and good vision can actually see him dancing around the D .I like the way he also stays cool to take his chances …picks his spot and often places it rather than trying to leather it …similar to the way Beardsley used to operate for us ..

I don’t get it. Palace haven’t even paid the entire 13m. They pay in installments. So technically they should just give him us back to us, no need for future fees, and whatever they’ve paid so far can be regarded as a loan fee for half the season.

I would not go anywhere near a deal with that lot for this player.
    Move on to better things.
Ince, someone who would actually be happy to play on the left.
We’ll end up with three left footed wingers who all want to play on the right.

A lot of talk about the No.10 role.
    Well here’s a question.
When Shearer played with Sir Lez.
Who was the No.9 and who was the No.10.

    Cheers for that.
He does look quality on the Denis wise scouting channel.
The ball he plays from his own half 2.15 is a cracking pass and the cross at 2.48 would be my pics .
Almost shelvey in the way he can spray passes around but looks very competitive in the tackles too for a lad listed as 72 kg .

U want better than Townsend then suggest Tom Ince? Also not entirely sure Townsend would be that upset about playing on the left

This was the news last summer “Napoli are moving for Dinamo Zagreb pair Marko Pjaca and Marko Rog. Rog is a creative midfielder who will turn 21 later this month……Pjaca a 21 year old winger”
Zagreb initially said no way but in the end Rog went to Napoli for €5 million and Pjaca to Juventus for €23 million that summer.

Croatia is just across the Adriatic from Italy and there are strong contacts.

Rafa’s bid for two young Zagreb stars – Corica and Benkovica.would appear to have a precedent.

    Ince is just an option.
In the whole of football we should be able to come up with a suitable left wing.
80K a week and a loan fee of 3Mill is 200K a week for a player who would leave again in June.

Loan to the end of the season for wages only.

@posada. Ferdinand wore the number 10 Shirt in 96/97 season, but Beardo wore the number 8. The number 10 role was a bit different then, back when teams used to play 4-4-2 mainly, where as the modern number 10 would really be what was then described as ‘the hole’. I remember us trying to play Paul Kitson there once, he looked bloody useless.

Not sure who started these rumours of Palace paying in installments, FatAsh is known for wanting all cash up front for transfers as was the demand for Sissoko which Spurs paid.
3 million loan fee for half a season, no chance that is happening, Charnley may be a bit thick but he’s not totally stupid, no other club is even looking at Townsend and no club in thier right mind would pay how current club 3 million for the remaining 19 games ( probably 18 by the time he signs)
We don’t actually need him to achieve promotion although he would be useful ( presuming he recaptures form of last stint) in prem
