Newcastle Reported After New Premier League Target

Aston Villa are interested in Swansea winger Modou Barrow who has been informed by new manager Paul Clement that he can leave the south Wales club this month, as Clement tries to bring other players in to fight relegation.

Swansea had a magnificent 3-2 win at Anfield on Saturday – the first time ever they have won at Anfield and the first time ever they were not beaten at Anfield – quite a result!

They deserved the win and the Swansea side under new manager Clement looked so very well organized.

24 year-old Swansea winger Modou Barrow

The Birmingham Mail is reporting that the 5 times capped Gambian International winger Barrow has a release clause of £5M in his contract, but we’re wary of Newcastle being interested in the right winger.

Barrow has a lot of skill when we have watched him, but he tends to be inconsistent and drifts into and out of games, although we suppose if Rafa sees something in the player he could make him into a better player at Newcastle.

The Birmingham Mail report that Swansea are hoping to use Barrow as part of a player-plus-cash deal to sign Aston Villa forward 25 year-old Ghanaian International.

Barrow signed for Swansea in the summer of 2014 from Swedish club Ostersunds FK for about £1.5M and has been on loan at Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers since then.

Modou has played 51 times for Swansea with just two goals.

We’d be surprised if Rafa is interested in this player.

What do you think?

I remember this lad now. From what I’ve seen of him he’s been quite impressive. Pretty rapid as well. Obviously not seen loads of him, just MOTD but to be honest, I’m surprised they’re happy to let him go. He’s looked canny, one of their better players tbh. I’m a bit confused why a team struggling to avoid relegation would sanction this. He clearly mustn’t suit their plans for some reason, or maybe it’s a clash of personalities – Clement took a dislike to him – but from what I’ve seen of him, he looks to have a lot of promise.

    “Tuff
Why does no one else being after Townsend mean such a bad thing considering the lack of Interest in Shelvey?”

Never said it was a bad thing. Cannot really see the relevance of introducing into the equation a totally hypothetical discussion about whether there is any interest in Shelvey.
Might as well ask why we are not going after Ibrahimovic or Costa.

“Why couldn’t Rafa, who likes him, not be able to get a similar level of performance out of Townsend as he did last season?”

Never mentioned at all anything about Rafa getting any type of performance out of him.
how do you know Rafa likes him. I’m not saying he does not -but where does it say he does.

“And tbh why is Townsend suddenly not good enough for us in the Championship but was a shining light for us in the PL?(more a general question than one specifically for u mate)”

Time date now – Townsend has gone downhill.
Never player a full game since the first week in November – getting subbed all the time.
He is not delivering the goods.
For a winger – that is a decent cross for the CF but instead he cuts inside for the Hollywood special on the left foot- which suggests his ambition is personal and not team orientated.

Ah right haha aye I’ve got next to no idea on him tbh

Am sure we were linked with a 10 mill enquiry last summer and we sacked it off quite quickly…plus this is coming out of Birmingham so I’ve no idea on credibility especially with a new 5mill release clause (though Swansea release clauses are different from a normal release clause somehow)

The times I’ve seen him he has pace to burn but ended up tying himself up in knots before either running it out for a goal kick or hoofing it out for a throw in on the far side

no thanks would rather have routledge back lol

I’ve only watched Barrow play once. It was an away match at Stoke. He was quite ineffectual and substituted after an hour.

It’s that time of year again.
The teams at the bottom of the prem are trying to restructure their squads. Probably want someone in but have to sell.
They will be doing it all from a position of not knowing what league they will be in next season or what income they have.
Great, let them get on with it.

U implied it was a bad thing

Rafa has said nothing bad about him, wanted him to stay (2 personal meeting before he went to palace), everything says we are after him now and he kept in touch with him congratulating him on his England call up post Newcastle…in fact I can’t think of anything that points towards him disliking Townsend

Townsend was worse off when we bought him last time and tbh he’s not got bad stats for someone who is so out of form. Could be a case he just doesn’t fit what they are asking him to do…I don’t watch Palace so no idea how well he’s done but overall they have been utterly crap at the back rather than in attack from what I gather of their club form

No way we would of let Townsend go for that price if there was no release clause so was that his true market value?

We spent a million less on him when he was barely playing reserve level football at Spurs…pretty hard to judge market value

No good for us so these reports are just rubbish and lazy, like I said a few days ago Rafa won’t probably bring anyone through since Swansea or Palace or both could get relegated and have very good players which we could get in the summer,so why waste money now?

We overpaid when we originally signed Townsend in the first place. He was out of the Tottenham side before his bust up with a coach – and that bust up with a coach was apparently all resolved… so it was team selection keeping him out of the side.

He didn’t have long left on his contract at Spurs either.

CIES claim we overpaid by £5.4 million for him.

But surely that why we are wanting it to be a loan which seems to be the destination being moved towards, if he’s coming here of course

And by the end of his loan maybe he’d be worth more than whatever we agree to buy him for in summer who knows

Money side of football I tend to ignore tbh I just don’t care all that much about it

Someone will probably come through the door but Rafa probably will have one eye on next season, we’ll need a massive clear out and big investment to retain our premier league status if we’re promoted.

Palace still owe us for Townsend, it’s an instalments deal. Ashley won’t pay cash up front to a club that owes us money. Would you? Damned if I would. A loan to buy sounds the deal to me. But, as Jib pointed out, if the money goes towards Palace taking Defoe – give em it!!! ?

I’ve been driving all afternoon so have just skipped through the posts, has anyone explained why we sold Townsend if it was to be paid in installments. As far frtched as it sounds what is to stop them meeting the clause then saying we’ll pay a million a year for the next 13 years, we’d have said not on your nelly. So did he get out clause have installments built in to it, if not we didn’t have to agree unless the money was paid upfront.

    Ed,
Is it safe to assume that you don’t fancy this Swansea player?
On Townsend, I think he could do a real job to get us over the line, to quote AP.
Talking of AP, surely he would not have done as badly as big Sam in the last four games. Having watched Swansea, they’re looking up for it. Maybe the trio Sunderland, Hull, Swansea isn’t a given.

I don’t buy that installment story at all Bobby. I think they paid us the full 13 million in the summer and want the full 13 million back now.

We want a loan deal now – say 3 million loan fee and the option to buy him for 10 million in the summer. Palace would rather have the money right now.
