Fans React To Potential Barrow Signing – Underwhelmed

Newcastle fans generally feel a little underwhelmed if we sign Modou Barrow from Swansea.

We’ve seen the lad play quite a few times for Swansea this season and he’s quick and has lots of skill and since we have Rafa Benitez in charge of all football matters at the club then Rafa must see something in the lad that he can bring out.

That would be much like he did with Andros Townsend last season.

So if we sign him we’ll certainly support the player big time and we’ll trust in Rafa – who knows what he’s doing.

24 year-old Swansea winger Modou Barrow

Overall though – fans seem disappointed and maybe part of that is the fact we’ll not get Andros back.

If you pause to think about it you can understand Crystal Palace playing hardball over Townsend.

We sign the underachieving Dwight Gayle and turn him into the top scorer in Europe and the only time Townsend has ever looked like an England player for the last 4 years is playing for NUFC.

They must be sick of Rafa making them look shite.

Not sure why people want a striker, we have Gayle, Mitro, Murphy, Perez and Gouff ( who is actually a striker rather than a winger), Rafa plays one striker so anyone we sign will be a bench warmer at best.
We need someone to rotate with Shelvey who can bring a good range of passing and an upgrade on left wing

    What’s Rafas plan?

Sign every available winger until Colback eventually picks one out with a pass?

Replace Jack, it’ll be more beneficial to the team.

The Toon are monitoring Forest midfielder Ben Osborn very closely but probably won’t move for him until the Summer.
Newcastle are not believed to be interested in a move for Leicester City winger Tom Lawrence, despite reports in The Mail

Take a deep breath, and here goes!

Barrow may be an excellent opportunity to bring in a great player on the cheap, why?

Townsend at Spurs was pretty poor, when he came to us he was nowt much to shout about until Rafa came then he started to show some glimpses of class. He move on to Palace and his form dropped again.

Shelvey under Rafa is one of our best players, but he was poor at Swansea.

Basically Rafa brings out the best in players, so Barrow has pace to burn, but not much else, if Rafa want’s the lad in he must see some potential in him, and feel that he can get the lad to work in our team,

We were writing off other players in our squad when they came in, but they are all stepping up to the plate when asked to do so, The team is functioning as a team should, and Rafa slots in a player when he feels he is ready to do a job.

Were not going to be getting any marque signings in this league, but at least we have a manager who can get the best out of what we have got and what we can get in.

We may not trust the players, but we can trust the manager to do his job and get us the results we need.

My personal opinion is we should be signing 3 premier league ready players in each of the next 2 windows. So we have a fighting chance of starting a settled side IF we go up. The if is dependent on making the signings. We may have enough to go up but why risk it when are in such a good position and also getting platers use to how rafa wants to play is the wise preperation we should be doing.

We should only be taking risks on players once we have a solid starting xi and for me central midfield, number 10 and a left winger are our weaknesses.

I’d add more quality in defence in the summer.

If we want sprinters then let’s try Linford Christie. Otherwise just make sure that if we sign someone then they are competent footballers willing to deliver on the pitch for Newcastle.
Maybe Barrow is just a pawn in the negotiating deal for Townsend – Allardyce has just spent £12m on Van Aarnholt so needs to balance the books and Townsend wants away.
    Let’s see what transpires.

Was thinking that we are struggling to get Shelvey cover to come to us this season so the thinking might be to have more wingers to play a more direct game next time he is out?

Barrow and Atsu on the wings would be rapid!!!

Not going to comment on this as I’ve never even seen him play. I suspect many others on here have only seen him once too.

I do find it weird that all these wingers play on the right when it is the left we need.

Atsu impresses me every time he plays and we have Ritchie.

Left wing we have Gouffran (who is having a good season) and Ameobi. We need the same quality on the left that we have on the right and lets face it. Neither of those above will be playing in the premier league next season. Does this mean, come summer we will need to sign and bed in 2 left wingers.

“If Barrow is done (still an if, although it looks more likely now), NUFC will keep looking for a central midfielder. No guarantees but I have a feeling they’ll be working up until the last day or two of the transfer window – and could even be active on deadline day itself.”

Current squad is good enough to get top 2. We’ll need a big reshuffle this summer afterwords though as probably 70/80% of players are dogfight premier league players at best. No point getting Barrow in for 3 odd months.

According to a document released by the FA Sheridan, who was later sacked by Notts County, told the ref: “My kids aren’t going to get any f****** Christmas presents because of you.”

He then told the fourth official: “You really are a c***. I’m gonna knock you out you c***.”

“I then asked Mr Sheridan to leave the technical area, and take a place in the stands.

“Mr Sheridan then said to me ‘You’re a f****** disgrace, you f****** useless, you’ve not f****** got anything right today, you should be f****** ashamed, you’re f****** shit.”

U rather down play Shevley and Townsends form in favor of the time where arguably they were at the worst spots in their careers

Whereas is Barrows not at the top of his career right now? Am sure he’d be functional and Rafa might bring a player out of him but it doesnt make me think he will improve our starting 11 which, ideally, is what we want is it not?

Rafa usually knows what he is doing i regards buying players but he has over the years bought a few duds and Liverpool fans will back that up.. I really cant see the point of buying this lad from Swansea.. The Gouf plays on the left and is a fav of Rafa, Ritchie plays on the right backed up by ATSU or Yedlin when Anita is fit, Even getting Townsend back makes little or no sense to the way the team is set up. Don’t buy for buying sake.. Another play maker yes as Shelvey will shoot himself in the foot again before the season is out…

If memory serves I have only seen Barrow play a couple of times, and never saw anything which made me think he would look good in a Toon top, however, if Rafa has done his homework on the kid, and I suspect he has, then bring him in. At least the kid has pace, and nothing frightens a defense quite like pace.

I wasn’t intending to play down any of the players mate, I just wanted to point out the difference in them under Rafa, really just making the point that Rafa can get the best out of a player.

I have never seen this Barrow lad play, (not even on you tube), but (if it’s not just a smokescreen to put pressure on Palace) if he is wanted by Rafa then you would have to assume Rafa thinks he can get him up to speed and playing the sort of football we want to see.

It may be that we play the kind of football that will suit the lad, and that he like many others will surprise us, could turn out to be a real bargain, or not as the case may be.

I dont get why everyone is down on our squad. Yes we will need to bring in quality next summer if we go up but here are the players that I think can do a job in the premier league.

    GK:
    Darlow
    Elliott

    DF
Dummet – Yes he lacks a bit and isnt very inspiring but he does his job and has in the passed.
Lascelles – Just hitting the right age to make the step up and did well on the relegation run in
Clark – Always a decent player, he just completely lost any motivation at Villa.

    Mid
Shelvey – He’s been there before
Ritchie – Did it with Bournemouth
    Diame

These are the players that have been there and can do well,

Then there are the unknowns that I wouldnt right off or flat out say they can’t do it:

    Gayle
Mitro (He didnt have a bad record in a woeful team)
Hayden (It’s probably the right time to step up)
    Yeddlin (same as Hayden)

We’re not a million miles off a side that can stay in the premier league. Our first priority if we go up should be ton stay up whether that means finishing 17th but I still fell that many on here wont be happy unless we break top 10.

If we scrap near enough a whole squad that helped us get up (with some players dropping down a league) to bring in flash names that have traditionally let us down we’ll just p155 off half the squad while the other half tries to gel and adjust.

Last time we went up, our best players were largely the same ones that had been our best players in the championship.

We need these fighters. And then we need to make sure we keep adding quality. Half the issue last time was that we didnt invest for a good 3 windows. We had some decent players but they lost motivation once they realised that Big Mike had no ambition and the rest of the squad deteriorated. Not to mention we had managers that were incapable of getting anything out of the resources he did have.

Aye admittedly I bow to Rafas decision and Ive not seen much of Barrows either (10 minutes to be exact and he was pretty crap someone mentioned Obertan and I wouldnt disagree but may of been an off 10 minutes)

It just seems like a big drop in quality to me, am quietly hoping it is to put pressure on Palace but it was a long shot in the first place in regards to Townsend so cant see it

As u say though Barrow may turn out to be revaluation for us if he signs

I think the loan options is the only way to go this window, as Rafa will not want to fill up the squad and limit his ability to bring in new signings when we go up.

There will be a clear out in the summer anyway, but tying new players down to long contracts now, would only make summer signings harder.

This is most likely why we are not buying Townsend or Barrow outright.

Barrow is not as bad as people think, last season against top teams he played very well, one game that springs to mind and that’s arsenal, came off the bench and totally changed the game, yes his crosses go all over the place but that happens to all players, shelvey for example last season on his debut two fabulous passes then after that game he went missing but under Rafa he’s our best player this season, Barrow would do well under Rafa.

How can any scout have ever looked at Clarke and thought “now that’s the player I want”. Makes utterly no sense buying him, we have four CB’s so what’s the point? This will be up there with the Thauvin balls up last summer
    SUTTY1978 // Aug 1, 2016 at 9:23 PM
Hate people saying “if Rafa rates him, so do I”.
Do people not have opinions any more. I’ve seen Clarke play plenty of times, he’s woeful.
Do people also not realise that Rafa hasn’t scouted these players? Unless they played against us in the last 10 games then he hasn’t seen them live. Rafa has even said he’s in daily contact with the scouting team. He’s an awesome manager but he doesn’t do everything at the club like some people think.

Sutty wasn’t the only one by a long way to be fair but please can all these “experts” on here please please shurrup and let Rafa get on with it !

Couldnt agree with the writer more.

I’ve noticed it at games this season and it beggars belief to me that a team that is sitting top two comfortably at the moment. Has the best manager it has had since SBR. The 2nd most accomplished manager we’ve ever had in the modern era (Keegan was a fan fave but not an accomplished manager when he managed us). On top of that we are seeing our players work their asses off each week for us.)

Still all many want to do is hurl abuse at Dummet.

Newcastle fans in general are great but we aren’t this godlike force that many think we are. SJP is a library at times this year despite having huge numbers in. Away atmospheres have been great but there are a ton of great football fans across the country.
