Newcastle Could Have Their Priorities Wrong In January

We are seeing lots of reports of Newcastle trying to bring our former winger Andros Townsend through the door this month.

And if we cannot get the Palace player then it seems we have Modou Barrow lined up from Swansea and today we were even linked with Leicester’s Welsh winger Tom Lawrence as potentially next in line.

But we haven’t heard much at all lately about Newcastle getting in an attacking central midfielder.

James McCarthy – have we given up on him?

When Jonjo Shelvey was out for five games we struggled and won only two of those games and we lost two Championship games against Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday and that were damaging.

So we hope we can bring in a good attacking central midfielder this month who can step in and run the central midfield should Shelvey be injured or even suspended again.

Otherwise we could have a problem.

After all we seem well equipped with wingers with Gouffran and Ritchie, and Christian Atsu should be back for the Africa Cup of Nations in two weeks time at the latest.

The fact we have Sammy Ameobi back will help and certainly Sammy looked good against Rotherham when he came on and there’s Achraf Lazaar who is very comfortable on the left wing.

We’ve been linked with Everton’s James McCarthy and Fulham’s Tom Cairney this month,  so we just hope we can bring in somebody good before 11:00 pm next Tuesday night when the transfer window slams shut.

It would be OK getting another winger in we suppose, but surely the priority should be for an attacking central midfielder?

What do you think?

We could always do with another Left Back……oh, those days have thankfully gone (or have they?). How many Wingers has Carr got through in comparison to other positions.

I think Rafa wants to bring in any Prem player to push the squad from getting complacent playing against Championship caliber teams. You saw NUFC willing to play head tennis with Rotherham rather than taking the ball down and passing it on the ground. Keep doing the lazy head it back routine, and NUFC loses the advantage of speed, strength and skill.

I agree Ed we desperately need a CAM! This bloke from Swansea is not the type of player we need, nor the calibre.

Is McCarthy really that good to warrant another non-news article? Last summer, maybe. At this point, Rafa may prefer to keep his powder dry for next season.

    Poor poor signing
Looks like Ashley might be having an input into transfers after all
